The weapon is constructed of at least one ball which is attached to a haft by a metal chain. However, there may be more than one ball and chain utilized. In addition to hitpoint damage the morning star will also cause either crush or puncture critical damage and injuries.

Because it has both excellent damage factors and AvD values, the morning star is one of the most desirable and effective weapons of its class. To be proficient with the morning star, the user must train in the blunt weapon skill.
The ball and chain is an articulated concussion weapon which consists of a heavy metal ball at the end of a chain attached to the end of a haft. The flexibility granted by the chain multiplies the force of a blow, making it more difficult for an opponent to parry and will cause, in addition to hitpoint damage, crush critical injuries. To be effective with the ball and chain, the user must train in the blunt weapon skill.

Due to its longer Roundtime and lower than average AvDs the ball and chain is considered somewhat inferior to most other blunt weapons.
The leather whip is constructed of a long flexible rod or piece of leather attached to a haft. The leather whip is the black sheep of the blunt family as it is not terribly effective against heavy armors. Because of its shortcomings, it will more likely be carried as an accoutrement for roleplay purposes rather than a serious weapon used to engage an enemy.
The WEAPON command is used for Weapon Techniques, which are learned automatically by martial professions as they train in weapon skills. New techniques are granted when a character achieves 10, 25, 50, and 75 ranks in a weapon skill. Pure spellcaster professions do not receive weapon techniques.

Base Weapon Types
The following is a list of base weapon types by the skill that a character needs to train to have proficiency in the weapon. Within a weapon skill category, the base weapon types are mainly differentiated by their Damage Factor (how hard they hit vs. different armors), AvD (how easily they hit vs. different armors), and Attack Roundtime (how long it takes to make an attack). For an in-depth explanation of these mechanics, see the Combat Guide. Unarmed combat items such as handwraps and footwraps work differently and are explained in the Unarmed Combat System article.

Each base weapon type may have multiple alternative nouns: for example, a "knife" and a "dirk" are both of the dagger type and behave the same mechanically. See the individual weapon pages for possible alternative nouns, or view the full list.

Weapons used by adventurers to engage in the combat system are classified into separate categories depending on the skills required to be proficient in them.

WEAPON Verb
:For more information, see: Weapon Technique

Designed for open-handed "slapping" attacks, the blades are usually thin enough that clenching the hand will break off one or more of the blades potentially causing slash critical damage. It has been rumored to be employed most often by "enforcers" of various clandestine organizations when disfigurement, rather than death, is the desired result.

The razorpaw has very limited effectiveness against heavily armored foes and should be reserved for use against unarmored or lightly armored targets.

The razorpaw is one of several Brawling weapons suitable for use with unarmed combat attacks. When used in conjunction with unarmed combat, its function changes from a weapon to an item of equipment. Held in the attacker's hand, it provides a .025 damage factor bonus and a -5 Multiplier Modifier penalty to all Jab, Punch and Grapple attacks. Holding a razorpaw in each hand will double the DF bonus and MM penalty.

The knuckle-duster is a brawling weapon more commonly, but not officially, known as brass knuckles. It is designed to lend weight and a higher level of lethality to closed fist attacks. Although it has the advantage of light weight and speed, the knuckle-duster is better suited to bar room brawling than combat in the wilds.

The knuckle-duster is one of several Brawling weapons suitable for use with unarmed combat attacks. When used in conjunction with unarmed combat, its function changes from a weapon to an item of equipment. Held in the attacker's hand, it provides a .050 damage factor bonus and a -10 Multiplier Modifier penalty to all Jab, Punch and Grapple attacks. Holding a knuckle-duster in each hand will double the DF bonus and MM penalty.
The fist-scythe is a brawling weapon resembling an elongated sickle blade more so than a scythe. The fist-scythe is commonly produced with a thickening of the blade towards the point, resulting in a less nimble weapon, but one which packs a more effective impact for its size. Constructed in this way, the weight distribution necessitates a fighting style which employs more chopping-style attacks and can result in either a cutting action from the blade's leading edge, or a stabbing impact if the point of the weapon is brought to bear.

One of the most ubiquitous of all brawling weapons, the fist-scythe is a highly favored choice among brawlers because of its versatility and effectiveness.
Because of its heavy weight it is one of the most devastating weapons available. The bola is a throwing weapon constructed by adding weights to the ends of interconnected ropes or cords. Originally designed to entangle the legs of farm animals it has proven to be effective against all manner of creatures.

Although there is no uniform design, most bolas have two or three balls, but there are versions of up to 8 or 9 balls. Some bolas have balls of equal weight, others vary the knot and cord. Gauchos use bolas made of braided leather cords with wooden balls or small leather sacks full of stones at the ends of the cords.

Depending on the exact design, the thrower grasps the bola either by one of the weights or by the nexus of the cords. He gives the balls momentum by swinging them and then releases the weapon, hurling it at the target.
The military pick is related to the crowbill, however, its large size requires that it be wielded with both hands. It is constructed primarily of two spikes at right angles to a long haft. Two-handed Weapons, such as the military pick, are weapons which require both hands to grasp, thus can not be used with a shield. The weapons which belong to this group resemble weapons from many of the other groups. However, there is a distinct difference in the sheer size and weight of these weapons. In general, two-handed weapons hit a great deal harder and do more damage than one-handed edged or blunt weapons. The trade-off is less defense offered by a shield.
The war mattock is one of many large Two-Handed Weapons that is effective against players and creatures in all armor types. It evolved from tools used to dig trenches. Much like the military pick, the mattock bears a spike which is attached at a right angle to the haft. However, on the other side the war mattock bears a flat edge which was once used for digging. Since the war mattock does only crushing damage, it is possible to guarantee, with a high enough endroll, a fatal result with aimed attacks to the target's head. This is due to the combination of game mechanics involving critical randomization and the instant death result from a rank 5 crush critical to the target's head.

Maul used to be an alternate verb for a War mattock. Some old mauls are still mattock base, and can be converted to the maul base at a portal in the local weapons shop. The two bases are still extremely similar.
Note: To edit these tables go to Template:Weapon table claidhmore (new style) Template:Weapon table claidhmore 2 (old style)

Old Style vs. New Style
The main differences between old-style and new-style claidhmores are that old-style has a -10 AS (thus a laen claidhmore would be 3x - 2x = 1x or +5 AS) and a +10 AvD (versus new-style.) These factors essentially even out. Additionally, new-style claidhmores lend a higher DS to many stances, but have a lower damage factor against some armor.

Inspecting a new-style claidhmore:
The quarterstaff is a basic weapon which consists primarily of a long length of wood. The quarterstaff requires two hands to hold, however, both ends of the staff can be utilized in order to deal damage to an opponent.Two-handed Weapons, such as the quarterstaff, are weapons which require both hands to grasp, thus can not be used with a shield. The weapons which belong to this group resemble weapons from many of the other groups. However, there is a distinct difference in the sheer size and weight of these weapons. In general, two-handed weapons hit a great deal harder and do more damage than one-handed edged or blunt weapons. The trade-off is less defense from the absence of a shield.

To be proficient with the quarterstaff it is strongly recommended that the user train in the two-handed weapon skill.
Game Mechanics
The quarterstaff does the least damage of the standard offensive two-handed weapons (runestaves are primarily used as defensive weapons). The advantages are its light weight and lower RT but most practitioners consider the quarterstaff less desirable than other two-handed weapons even with these advantages.

The quarterstaff weapon profile and damage table also apply to short bows, long bows and composite bows when they are used as melee weapons (right hand only).
