&#039;&#039;&#039;Tremors&#039;&#039;&#039; causes a disruption in the magical aura of an area, causing the area to begin shaking in what seems like a very minor earthquake, complete with aftershocks (except that it is an illusion).  The strength of the initial tremor is randomly strong or weak, and the series of aftershocks progressively weaken in strength from the initial tremor.  As an [[area of effect]] spell, everyone outside of the caster&#039;s group is subject to a warding roll to remain standing.  Any targets knocked down by Tremors will suffer a penalty to their [[evade]] [[block]] [[parry]] (EBP)% by a base of 5% for 10 seconds.  The targets&#039; EBP% penalty can be increased with training in [[Elemental Lore, Earth]], as described in detail [[#Lore Benefits|below]]. [[Prone]] targets that would have failed the knock-down roll also receive said penalty.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Tremors can also be self-cast by preparing and then [[EVOKE (verb)|evoking]] the spell. This will imbue the caster with 5 charges of Tremors, which can be increased with training in Elemental Lore, Earth. The caster can then {{boldmono|STOMP}} the ground, causing a single set of tremors at a cost of 5 mana and one charge (no aftershocks). Mana cost per charge can be reduced by training in [[Elemental Mana Control]] (see [[#Mana Control Benefit|below]]). There is no round time for using such a charge. (The caster can also {{boldmono|TAP}} with a runestaff or quarterstaff in hand or {{boldmono|POUND}} with a maul to trigger the tremors.) This version will be somewhat weaker on average than the initial shaking of the open cast version, but stronger than the aftershocks.  The self-cast version of Tremors has a duration of 20 minutes + ([[Wizard Base]] ranks * 60 seconds). Re-evoking Tremors refreshes both the duration and the number of charges.&lt;br /&gt;

Although this spell looks similar to the [[Arcane]] spell [[Quake (1714)]], it does not affect adjacent rooms, and creatures do not receive [[roundtime]] when they fall.&lt;br /&gt;

Note that they cast [[Curse (715)]] including Itch.  This can cause players to drop any items in their hands abruptly and repeatedly!  If they can ward you, be wary hunting with anything too precious to you.&lt;br /&gt;

While gaunt spectral servants are non-corporeal, they can be stunned rather easily with either standard attacks, maneuvers, or spells (though they are still immune to crits). Due to their use of [[Cloak of Shadows (712)]], this can either help or hinder you in battle, depending on the circumstances.&lt;br /&gt;

There are two types of bolt spells: true bolt spells and ball spells. The [[Damage Factor]]s (DFs) for many bolt spells can be increased by training in the appropriate lore skill. The DF bonus is based on the number of ranks trained. For the following spells the DF increase is 0.001 per rank up to 50 lore ranks, 0.001 per two ranks for ranks 51 to 100 and 0.001 per four ranks for ranks greater than 100. A character with 200 lore ranks would see a total DF increase of 0.100.&lt;br /&gt;

Ball spells are a subgroup of bolt spells that do less damage on a single target but have the ability to perform additional splash damage on several creatures (including the original target) due to explosion of the ball upon impact.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are four steps to determine the number of targets struck by a ball spell.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
A random number &amp;lt;code&amp;gt;X&amp;lt;/code&amp;gt; is generated between 0 and 8, with lower numbers more likely to be chosen.&lt;br /&gt;

For those who prefer a more intuitive explanation, the appropriate lore determines the minimum size of the explosion caused by the spell whereas MOC determines how well you can place the explosion such that it hits the most targets. The appropriate Lore skill determines what &#039;&#039;size&#039;&#039; water balloon you can throw; MOC ranks determine how accurately you place it within the group of targets with which you are dealing.)&lt;br /&gt;

The &#039;&#039;&#039;dark vortece&#039;&#039;&#039; is a mass of dark, swirling shadows. Little more is known about this deadly creature despite many attempts to study their origins. This is understandable when you consider the one well known fact about them: Simply being in the presense of a dark vortece is enough to endanger your life, due to their tendency to drain the life out of everything around them.&lt;br /&gt;

==Hunting strategies==&lt;br /&gt;
Only weapons that do crushing damage will be effective against dark vorteces. They do not carry a weapon or shield, wear no armor and have an extremely low [[defensive strength]]. They also take [[Crush critical table|crush]] critical damage but not [[critical]] [[Injury|injuries]] or status effects.  &lt;br /&gt;

[[Dark Catalyst]] is the only &#039;&#039;immediate&#039;&#039; sorcerer spell that affects them. They will take damage from open cast [[Energy Maelstrom (710)]], and will grab hold for open [[Implosion (720)]] but will not stun, though they are still immune to cold criticals. Minor elemental is also absorbed.&lt;br /&gt;

Upon death, they may release hazy tenebrous orbs.  Gem dealers will pay for them, and they vary widely in value (from under 100 silver to over 6000). They vanish immediately upon death. &lt;br /&gt;

[[Uthex Kathiasas]] called these &amp;quot;dyar rakul&amp;quot; (&#039;&#039;[[Iruaric]]&#039;&#039;: &amp;quot;dark cold shadows&amp;quot;), which were &amp;quot;other standard&amp;quot; (non-demonic) extra-planar entities from [[Rolemaster]] called Nycorac. Nycorac were mysterious entities made of some unknown kind of energy, who had the ability to move between planes of existence at will (though these ones appear trapped.) The extended creature description above regarding their unknown origins and nature is unusual, as the describe verb only includes the first sentence. They are not considered [[Extraplanar beings (saved post)|extraplanar beings]] for system purposes in [[GemStone]] IV.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
They were extremely difficult to fight, due to their virtual invisibility, and immunity to almost all weapons. They would stalk their victims, who would only feel &amp;quot;cold chills&amp;quot;, draining the life out of them. When you consider that no one knows how to summon them and their origins were unknown, with the nature of their energy beyond comprehension, that Uthex was forging them is supposed to be virtually impossible. The vorteces might be some kind of unnatural perverse hybrid creature between the Nycorac and [[Blacar]] entities, because they are made of darkness rather than invisibility.&lt;br /&gt;

Successful attacks will cause the target to sustain [[hitpoint]] damage and possibly [[Lightning critical table|lightning]] based [[critical]] injuries.&lt;br /&gt;

There is a seed 5 Elemental Lore, Air skill chance of applying a persistent electrical jolt on the target called Stun Shock. It will last for 8 + seed 10 ranks of Elemental Lore, Water seconds. Every 4 seconds, Stun Shock will either stun or cause minor electrical damage to the target. Typically, [[critical]]s are ranks 1 or 2. This somewhat orc-like looking humanoid creature is surrounded with an eerie white glow and appears to be transparent.  An abundance of excessively wrinkled skin and long bushy grey eyebrows serve to make spectral miner appear ancient.&lt;br /&gt;

==Hunting strategies==&lt;br /&gt;
The best strategy for hunting spectral miners is to stance dance for all professions and hunting styles except [[CS]]-casting ones, although stance dancing may be good for them too depending on the spells use.  Miners have a really low [[DS]] for their level and are always in offensive stance when genned.  Many professions also have quite an easy time uphunting them if they are very cautious to not get caught in offensive stance when a miner uses its [[Attack strength|AS]]-boosting ability. It is worth remembering that your DS will be significantly lower in Shadow Valley than elsewhere.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For wizards, [[Minor Steam]] is very effective vs their ASG 7 armor, especially since you don&#039;t care about the lack of steam death crits.  At 35 trains, I can almost always kill with a channeled evoked [[Hand of Tonis]] bolt to knock down followed up with 2 Minor Steam.&lt;br /&gt;

These are the cursed workers of [[Muylari]]&#039;s mining crew, who perished upon awakening the Terrorite demon which was dormant below ground. They are likely an allusion to the miners in [http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/sot.aspx &amp;quot;The Shadow out of Time&amp;quot;] by H.P. Lovecraft, which is part of the background for [[The Graveyard]] and [[The Broken Lands]]. Like the Shadow Valley [[A Popular History of Shadow Valley|story]] its narrator suffered from amnesia and pseudo-memories, and was afflicted with &amp;quot;daemoniac dreams&amp;quot;, experiencing a [[Purgatory#Archaeology|demon wind]] of the eldritch Elder Things in underground ruins. The exits of Shadow Valley are plunges into chasms of utter darkness with unknown felt horrors, returning to the waking world, reflecting the endings of both &amp;quot;Shadow&amp;quot; and [http://www.hplovecraft.com/writings/texts/fiction/dq.aspx &amp;quot;The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.&amp;quot;] It is noteworthy that they were phased into the mineshaft walls, possibly due to an [[isles of transfer]] phenomenon, reminiscent of the later [[Ur-Daemon#Teras Isle: Head of the Beast|Ur-Daemon]] of [[Teras Isle]]. The horror of the scene is things from later times being found in [[Lesser vruul#Behind The Scenes|impossibly old]] and sealed off places, which is the implicit [[The Temple of Darkness|theme]] of [[The Broken Lands]]. In this context the skull in the wall is relevant because that [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mound_(short_story)#Plot_summary story ends] with the reanimated headless body of [[Selias Jodame|the narrator]] of the older expedition. Their tunnels are reminiscent of the dark grotto and were probably flooded with black ooze, which may really be the [[magru]] as shoggoth-like hybrids of Absorbers and [[Hoard]], which had phasing powers and so explaining endogenously the emulsified chalk and equipment. Shadow Valley would have originally been located near the underground portal of [[The Broken Lands]], whose premise includes making powerful demons that sleep over long eons. (It is probably the case that the Shadow Valley release event was the result of a celestial alignment causing the valley to shift and allowing the demon to wake up again.)
