== Single Target Maneuver ==
The single target maneuver version of the spell is the default when incanting or casting at a target. This version has a cast time of 2 seconds and a mana cost of 5.

The caster attempts to summon sticky webbing to ensnare a single target. This is an [[SMR]] attack that applies [[Webbed]] if successful for a duration calculated with the [[standard negative duration formula]]. The success rate of the attack is improved with the caster's level, skill ranks in the Minor Spiritual spell circle, and [[Spell Aiming]].

The [[Webbed]] effect prevents targets from taking most actions, applies a significant penalty to [[Defensive Strength]], and disables the chance to outright [[Evade]]/[[Parry]].

== Area ==
The area version of the spell is available by [[open cast]]ing without specifying a target. This version has a mana cost of 10.

The caster creates a large sticky web in the room that lasts 5 minutes or until it runs out of snare charges. A fresh web will have 2 snare charges plus additional charges based on [[Spiritual Lore, Summoning]]: see [[#Lore Benefits|Lore Benefits]]. The web does not automatically dissipate if the caster leaves the room.

Player or creature actions have a chance to trigger an [[SMR]] attack (identical to the single target version) in the following situations:

== Bolt ==
Web Bolt is unlocked with 20 ranks of Spiritual Lore, Summoning. It is cast using {{boldmono|[[EVOKE]]}}, costs 9 mana, and uses the [[unbalance critical table]], producing injuries along with frequent knockdowns and stuns. When the target is hit successfully there is also a chance to ensnare the target in a web for up to a minute.

As a [[bolt spell]], it requires training in [[Spell Aiming]] to be effective and can be {{boldmono|[[CHANNEL]]}}ed.

Additional training in Spiritual Lore, Summoning will increase the chance of ensnaring the target in a sticky webbing by 1% for every 2 ranks. At 140 ranks there is a 100% chance to web a like-level target. Over training will offset any additional level penalty. The chance of applying the webbed condition is

==Interactions with Other Spells==
*[[Call Swarm (615)]] will enhance the strength of the web. Messaging can be viewed [[Call Swarm (615)#Interactions with other spells|here]].
*[[Arashan]] summoned with [[Minor Summoning (725)]] can add charges to area webs and take control over hostile webs (area webs cast by other characters/creatures). Multiple arashan can add to the same web.

===Fire===
[[Fire Spirit (111)]], [[Minor Fire (906)]] / [[gold wand]]s, and [[Major Fire (908)]] can be used on a web (both on a webbed creature and an area effect web) to set the webbing on fire. This does additional damage to the creatures ensnared in the web, but the web will dissipate quicker. Vials from immolation traps removed via [[Lock Mastery]] will have the same effect.

Because of the good chances for knockdown, webbing, or general stun from the bolt version of Web, it couples very well with Fire Spirit as a general hunting tactic. Web can be cast first until a hit is successful (owing to its lower mana cost), and Fire Spirit can then follow, typically with a much stronger hit for one or more of the above reasons. Of course, the same is true with the warding or area effect versions (although the mana cost will be higher), and a caster can choose the appropriate version of Web for the situation.

If one wants to dissipate a hostile Area Web, setting it on fire and sticking around might backfire.

The interaction with fire also makes Web particularly effective with fire [[flare|flaring]] [[runestaff|runestaves]]. A successful cast of the warding version will always web an appropriate target, where as the chance to web on a bolt cast will depend on the caster's lore training noted above. Any case where the spell results in the target becoming webbed and a fire flare occurs will induce extra damage.

The {{boldmono|EVOKEd}} version of [[Sanctify (330)]] can proc on a cast of Web, causing the target to immediately take a strong Holy Fire flare ''and'' damage from the burning web. Of course, this also means that Sanctify can interfere with setting up a cast of [[Condemn (309)]] against a webbed target.

This part of the cavern seems intimate after the expansiveness just around a bend of the red stone. Recesses all along the east wall give the rock a filigreed appearance which belies the vast size of each enclosure. The fine sand is a constant carpet, however, the light it expends is much dimmer here, fading to a soft twilight within the eastern niches. To the south, the walls swirl to create an oval passageway into another cavern where more of the recesses can be glimpsed. You also see a jagged stone ledge, a narrow fissure and a stiff sandy pack.

Stepping into this part of the cavern, you are struck by its intimacy after the vastness just beyond the bend of red stone. Fine sand carpets the floor, its glow now dimmed to a gentle twilight that pools softly within the eastern niches. You see the grizzled half-elf who asked you to meet here. He looks up, his eyes haunted. "My order came to the Rift, seeking to cleanse the Rift of its unholy insanity," he says, "But the horrors within were beyond anything we imagined."

Suddenly, a crystal amulet on a nearby table begins to blink with a soft, pulsating light. The kobold shaman stops his chant mid-word.

"Oh, for the love of... one moment," he mutters, snatching the amulet. He rubs it vigorously and then holds it to his temple, his eyes squeezed shut.

"Yes? Bomblemagoria here... No, I told you, the 'surprise' in the Surprise Darkstone Castle Buddy is that it might not be a buddy! It could be a rock... Yes, a very nicely shaped rock!... A refund? On a *surprise*? That undermines the entire business model! ... Look, the fine print is also a surprise! You knew what you were getting into! No! All sales final!"

The shaman slams the amulet down on the table, the light sputtering out. He takes a deep, calming breath, which seems to fail entirely. "Customers," he spits, turning back to you and the cauldron.

Finally, the shaman steps back from his work table and hands you a bowl full of thick, pungent paste. As you go to drink it, he says, "Wait, wait. This time, we do it properly. This sacrament is best taken in a location that is closer to the veil between worlds. Don't look at me like that. I know it sounds ominous, but it's really pretty quaint there if you stay away from the lost souls and the terrophages."

The inferno that is the spice of the peppers almost deadens your tongue to the disgusting swamp-and-old-socks flavor of the other herbs. You stagger back, clutching your midsection. Your eyes roll up into your head and the world goes black.

What seems like an eternity later, light, cold and hard, forces itself into your field of vision. You realize that you are flying (great!) far above the clouds (less great!), and tiny towns and roads dot the green lands below. A terrible keening sound draws your attention westward, where a fleet of colossal flying ships streaks through the sky, cruelly rending the puffy white clouds.

The ships are enormous, each easily the size of a small town. Their hulls are a stark and uncompromising white, with angular lines and sharp edges. They are predatory. Standing near the prow of one of the vessels, utterly unbothered by the cruel talons of the wind, is a towering figure with skin like polished moonstone, her shaven head adorned with an intricate web of tattoos.

She seems to notice you. With a smirk, she shouts an order over her shoulder. Even if you could understand the strange, languid language, most of the command is lost to the protestations of the wind. There is a bustle of activity on the decks of the ships: hers, first, and then the others. And then the unthinkable happens.

Small black objects begin to fall from the ships, plummeting toward one of the towns below. As they land amid the streets, they erupt into spires of colorless flame. You see the woman looking at you. She uses no words, but her meaning is clear: "This is what happens to those who oppose us. Do not stand against us."

We learned to harness new mystical arts, and claimed the skies as our own."

If you were to give me a Gemstone, I might be able to use this codex to replace one property with another."

While you were gone, one of your fellow adventurers delivered a completed stang containing a type of Dust that is... elegant. The alchemical purity is unlike anything I have ever seen. "So I disposed of your Dust. Buried it in my yard. Don't even try to find it, because I mixed it with a toxin rendering the Dust inert. Salted the ground afterwards. Your Dust will never serve as a distraction to any such scholar as myself. It was quite bad, the Dust."

In this particular way, you exceed him."

"I know that you've already been through two rituals, but how about a third? Don't worry, this time you won't be consuming any sacrament. In fact, the gamble I'm making is that the sacrament has already stirred something inside of you; I will merely bind Dust to it. You will become... scintillating."

The artificer squints at you. "I am ready. Are you?"

For Kaybrecht Vorstag, the fall of Baron Lerep Hochstib was more than the defeat of a ruler, it was the collapse of a homeland's dream. He had devoted years to preserving the lives of Jantalar's soldiers, believing their cause to be just and their sacrifices necessary. When the banners fell and history branded Jantalar the villain, Kaybrecht did not rage against the world. He simply carried the weight of defeat in quiet solitude.

He never renounced his loyalty to Jantalar.

Instead, he buried himself in the only calling that had ever truly defined him: healing.

Settling in Solhaven, he became known as an exceptional physician and master healer. While he recognizes that Hochstib's final descent into darkness doomed everything they fought to build, he cannot bring himself to condemn the homeland he loved or the soldiers whose lives he fought so desperately to save.

He does not dwell on lost battles or fallen kingdoms.

He remembers names.

The young recruit who died despite every effort. The veteran who survived because a tourniquet was tied moments sooner. The exhausted healers who stood beside him through endless nights in blood-soaked field hospitals.

Those memories became his burden—and his purpose.

The war may have ended, but Kaybrecht's calling did not. Though his loyalty to Jantalar remains hidden, his life has become one of quiet service, carrying both the pride of a patriot and the sorrow of a man whose nation lost everything but its survivors.
