LORDCARANORN: /* Different Ways to Ambush */

Ambush is the ability to make a very precise attack, employing the element of surprise.

In a hidden ambush, the goal is to approach a target undetected and strike before the quarry can react to defend or strike back. To take advantage of this, one should use the HIDE command (which uses a skill check for Stalking and Hiding) or other means to become hidden, and then, while hidden, make an attack using one of the options detailed below. Ambush skill improves the chance of hitting a specific body part when aiming, and increases critical weighting (with AMBUSH) or damage weighting (with WAYLAY). In addition, the attacker's Ambush skill relative to the target's level will result in decreased defenses (EBP of the target is reduced by 50% when ambushing) and lowering the target's stance for the ambushing attack, which effectively lowers their Defensive Strength (DS). When ambushing with range using FIRE or HURL, only the stance pushdown is applied, not the extra weighting.

In an open ambush, the goal is simply to aim the attack at one of the target's body parts. The chance of hitting the specific body part with melee or hurling is affected by both the Ambush and Combat Maneuvers skills (this is different from hidden ambushes where only Ambush skill is taken into account). For ranged weapons (bows and crossbows), Ambush and Perception are used to determine the chance when firing from hiding, but only Perception is used for open ambushes.

Ambush skill also increases Attack Strength (AS) for all attacks with bows and crossbows, regardless of whether they are aimed or hidden.
History
Caranorn Aghlaredhel's origins are a well hidden secret. What is known is that he was raised in Wehnimer's Landing by his uncles and was greatly inspired by his encounters with the giantman Thrudh Crush who had been his uncle Carandraug (Sr.)'s oldest friend. Despite being an elf Caranorn opted early on to speak in an accent similar to that of many giantkin he had grown up with. Only in later times would he abandon this fad and mostly speak common.

Influenced by his uncle and Thrudh, Caranorn chose to become a fighter making speed and accuracy with heavy weapons his speciality. It was around that time that he adopted a human fighter named Kaylari as his sister. Another early friend, dating back to hunting dark orcs in the Abandoned Inn was the rogue Bonespirit. To this day he holds deep gratitude to a ranger named Ioo whom he only met once at Thrak's Inn, it was from this stranger that he received his first special weapon, a drake greatsword.

Even before starting adventuring in 5096 Caranorn had become a fervent follower of Lorminstra and as his skills grew he sometimes would style himself 'Knight to Lorminstra', a certain elven arrogance in which he was willing to even challenge Voln himself. Nerveless, as a servant of Lorminstra it was only natural that he would join the Order of Voln, rapidly rising to the rank of a master of that order. It was so that he met a young elf outcast whom he would adopt into his family, naming him Carantur. Like Caranorn, Carantur became a follower of Lorminstra, serving as one of her clerics in the Landing.

In his early forays in the fight against the undead Caranorn made many new friends. Among his more notable acquaintances was Morgiest, a young follower of Kai whom he helped guide in his early steps into adventuring. In later years this former role of mentor and student would often be turned around, though both penned a series of guides and history books for warriors together. Another friend met at that time was the healer Shrelae to whom he proposed in the graveyard. The young lady wisely rejected this request but saved the foolish young elf by pulling him back to his feet just as a couple of arch wights charged him, seeing an opportunity to kill their kneeling foe.

It was through Thrudh and Morgiest that Caranorn was introduced to the House Daigneach Onoir, having arrived too late he became the first non founding member of that group devoted to teaching the young, particularly in matters of honor. Unfortunately this association with Onoir was abruptly broken a few years later when his former squire, who shall not be named here, viciously turned on him in a matter of house policy. This betrayal was so traumatic that for many years Caranorn would refuse any official contact with his old House though he never broke off contact with his friends. Ever after he continued the practice of teaching the young as he had done with Onoir. Over the years these old wounds started to mend and Caranorn was first invited by Matti and later Cosanie to rejoin his old house. Still he was hesitant and it was only in 5122 that he accepted a renewed invitation and became a Paladin of Daigneach Onoir once more.

Being raised by his uncles Caranorn originally resided at Silvergate Inn and it was only after joining Onoir, that with the blessing of Lord Enegue, he sought to be admitted to House Phoenix by Lord Waldo2. As a member of Phoenix he became a hunt leader as well as his house's guide to River's Rest. His first venture to that town had rapidly turned to violence, not knowing town traditions he had asked a locksmith to open his loot boxes in the Commons, upon which the young artisan was threatened by a number of locals and Caranorn felt obliged to defend the poor adventurer, who after all had only acted on his request. Rapidly a stand off ensued in which the elven fighter stood against a dozen locals and it was only through intervention of an older empath that none were killed in the incident. Ever after Caranorn held an attraction, which he could never fully comprehend himself, to that town.

In 5122, after a long hiatus from adventuring Caranorn returned to Wehnimer's Landing where he soon came into contact with Sir Khazaann, a fighter he had met on occasion before but had not spent any particular time with before. It came as a great surprise when he was thus invited to squire for his new friend and thus join the Silver Gryphons.

The Player
Caranorn's player is not a native English speaker, he was introduced to Gemstone III in the spring of 1996 while in college in the United States. He has since returned to his home country in Europe. In addition to Caranorn he has played a number of other characters some, but by far not all, also using names starting with 'Caran...' Were he to name his characters today Caranorn would be styled 'Aglarorn Caranedhel'.

Despite being an elf Caranorn early opted to speak in an accent similar to that of many giantkin he had grown up with.

His first venture to that town rapidly turned to violence, not knowing town traditions he had asked a young locksmith to open his loot boxes in the Commons, upon which the young artisan was threatened by a number of locals and Caranorn felt obliged to defend the poorr adventurer, who after all had only acted on his request. Rapidly a stand off occurred where the elven fighter stood against a dozen locals and it was only through intervention of an older empath that none were killed in the incident. Ever after Caranorn held an attraction to that town which he could never fully comprehend himself.

Despite being an elf Caranorn early opted to speak in an accent similar to that of many giantkin he had grown up with. Only in later times would he abandon this fad and mostly speak common.

Influenced by his uncle and Thrudh Caranorn chose to become a fighter making speed and accuracy with heavy weapons his speciality. It was at that time that he adopted a human fighter named Kaylari as his sister. Another early friend, dating back to hunting dark orcs in the Abandonned Inn was the rogue Bonespirit. To this day he holds deep gratitude to a ranger named Ioo whom he only met once at Thrak's Inn, it was from this stranger that he received his first special weapon, a drake greataxe.

Even become starting adventuring in 5096 Caranorn had become a fervent follower of Lorminstra and as his skills grew he sometimes would style himself 'Knight to Lorminstra', a certain elven arrogance in which he was willing to even challenge Voln himself.

Unfortunately this association with Onoir was abruptly broken a few years later when his own former squire, who shall not be named here, turned on him in a matter of house policy.

As a member of Phoenix he became a hunt leader as well as Phoenix's guide to River's Rest.

It was through Thrudh and Morgiest that Caranorn was introduced to the House Daigneach Onoir, having arrived too late he became the first non founding member of that group devoted to teaching the young, particularly in matters of honor. Unfortunately this association with Onoir was abruptly broken a few years later when his own former squire, who shall not be named here, turned on him in a matter of house policy.

As a member of Phoenix he became a hunt leader as well as Phoenix's guide to River's Rest.

Even become starting adventuring he had became a fervent follower of Lorminstra and as his skills grew he sometimes would style himself 'knight to Lorminstra', a a certain elven arrogance in which he was willing to even challenge Voln himself. Nerveless, as a servant of Lorminstra it was only natural that he would join the Order of Voln, rapidly rising to the rank of a master of that order. It was so that he met a young elf outcast whom he would adopt into his family, naming him Carantur. Like Caranorn, Carantur became a follower of Lorminstra, serving as one of her clerics in the Lading.

In his early forrays in the fight against the undead Caranorn made many new friends. Among his more notable acquaintances was Morgiest, a young follower of Kai whom he helped guide in his early step in adventuring. In later years this former role of mentor and student would often be turned around, though both penned a series of guides and history books for warriors together.

It was through Thrudh and Morgiest that Caranorn was introduced to the House Daigneach Onoir, having arrived too late he becamee the first non founding member of that group devoted to teaching the young, particularly in matters of honor. Unfortunately this association with Onoir was abruptly broken a few years later when his own former squire, who shall not be named here, turned on him in a matter of house policy. This betrayal was so traumatic that for many years Caranorn would refuse any official contact with that House though he never broke off contact with his old friends.

Being raised by his uncles Caranorn first lived at Silvergate Inn and it was only after joining Onoir that he sought to be admitted to House Phoenix, where he was admitted by Lord Waldo2. As a member of Phoenix he became a hunt leader as well as Phoenix's guide to River's Rest. His first venture to that town rapidly turned to violence, not knowing town practice he had asked a young locksmith to open his loot boxes in the Commons, upon which the young artisan was threatened by a number of locals and Caranorn felt obliged to defend the younger adventurer, who after all had only acted on his request. Rapidly a stand off occurred where the elven fighter stood against a dozen locals and it was only through intervention of an older empath that none were killed in the incident. Ever after Caranorn held an attraction to that town which he could never fully comprehend himself.

The Player
Caranorn's player is not a native English speaker, he was introduced to Gemstone III while in college in the United States. He has since returned to his home country in Europe. In addition to Caranorn he has played a number of other characters, some, but by far not all of them, also using names starting with 'Caran...' Were he to name his characters today Caranorn would be styled 'Aglarorn Caranedhel'.
Bonuses increase with each tier of sanctification, from Tier 1 up to Tier 5. Sanctified weapons can be created and upgraded in tiers using a Cleric's Sanctify (330) spell. Clerics and Paladins can use the ASSESS command to check an item for this property. Sanctified items will also be identified via loresinging. Sanctified items can be temporarily blessed using Bless Item (304).
Gear made from certain materials (white ora, eonake, faewood, and white alloy) are considered holy even if not sanctified, and have some benefits when wielded by Clerics and Paladins. Some items generated through the treasure system may also be considered holy. Holy items can be further sanctified like any other item.

Sanctification confers the following benefits (only) against undead:

Weapons:
*Normally, undead have a 25% damage resistance against physical damage. A sanctified weapon negates 5% of that damage resistance per tier, removing it completely at Tier 5 for characters of any profession. A weapon that is blessed with Bless Item (304) will temporarily remove all damage resistance while the bless charges persist. For Clerics and Paladins only, simply wielding any holy or sanctified weapon of any tier removes all damage resistance.
*Melee/ranged weapons gain a bonus of +2 AS (versus undead) per tier.
*Runestaves gain a bonus of +2 AS and +1.2 CS (versus undead) per tier.
*When noncorporeal undead are defeated, there is a +20% chance per tier to anchor its remains to prevent it from immediately dissipating, allowing the remains to be searched.
*At Tier 5 sanctification, trained Clerics can further imbue the weapon with permanent holy fire flares, dealing an additional 50 to 100 concussion damage upon a flare (or 75 to 125 in the hands of a Cleric).

Defensive Gear:
*Targets wielding a sanctified shield, or torso armor gain a bonus of +2 DS, +1.2 TD (versus undead attacks) and +1 effective level vs undead sheer fear, per tier.
*Targets wielding a sanctified runestaff gain a bonus of +1 DS, +0.6 TD (versus undead attacks) and +0.5 effective level vs undead sheer fear, per tier.
*Runestaff or shield stack with torso armor, but runestaff and shields do not stack with each other.
White ora is slightly rarer than regular ora, and is more valued. It has the same basic properties as common ora, but it has the unusual natural ability to harm the undead under the right conditions. Through much study of this strange variant of ora, it is said that the magic within the metal reacts to the aura of a cleric or paladin, becoming sanctified in their hands. This allows them to wield it against undead beings without the aid of blessing magic. White ora is not otherwise blessable when used by other professions.
A favorite of Imaera's, faewood has long been a preferred material for use in holy items. A tall tree with a rounded crown, the faewood greets spring with upright clusters of showy white flowers that are exceptionally fragrant. It is said that one can locate a faewood tree in spring from a mile or more distance. The tree's foliage is dark green and short-stalked, and its smooth bark is brown to gray. Faewood trees yield a pale brown, smooth or slightly pitted fruit that contains shiny brown seeds. These seeds are known to have healing properties, but they require refinement for in their natural state, they are poisonous.

In the spring the faewood is festooned with upright clusters of beautiful and fragrant white flowers - so fragrant, in fact, that one can locate a tree from far off simply by following the wondrous scent.
White alloy was originally the failed attempt to create a cheap permanently blessed material. However, it was recently discovered that, when properly blended, this alloy is anathema to the cursed shades and undead spirits that haunt Elanthia. Undead spirits struck by a white alloy weapon take extra damage and are temporarily anchored to the mortal plane when slain. Undead spirits recoil from white alloy armor and shields, making it harder for them to damage those bearing such equipment.

White alloy is considered a magical metal and can be used to craft weapons, armor, and shields. However, it is unsuitable for bows, staves, claidhmores, and katanas. It has a natural enchantment of +20. It can not be dyed.

White alloy is a holy material, allowing it to naturally bypass undead damage resistance when wielded by a Cleric or Paladin; other professions will need to have it blessed to negate undead damage resistance. While blessed, it will always anchor non-corporeal undead, making their remains able to be searched. In addition, it is a non-corporeal undead bane, granting +8 damage weighting against those enemies. Finally, it has the unique ability that all attacks against non-corporeal undead have a 25% chance to treat the undead as corporeal.
White alloy is an extremely rare metal. Its innate material property is similar to undead bane but only for non-corporeal undead creatures, being damage weighted against them. It does NOT make the non-corporeal undead become corporeal. It does help with searching them however.

In the I.C.E. source books, white alloy was a combination of iron, carbon, and titanium. White alloy by itself had no magical properties.

Archived Information
White alloy is an extremely rare metal. Its innate material property is similar to undead bane but only for non-corporeal undead creatures, being damage weighted against them. It does NOT make the non-corporeal undead become corporeal. It does help with searching them however.

In the I.C.E. source books, white alloy was a combination of iron, carbon, and titanium. White alloy by itself had no magical properties.

It is the polar opposite of black ora.
