__TOC__
In times of great trouble, a cleric can call down the Divine Wrath of their patron to inflict holy damage on their foes.

Each cast begins with deity messaging along with the target(s) taking immediate health damage plus a critical type dependent on the caster's chosen deity, followed by two rounds of damage (with 6 seconds between rounds), as long as the cleric does not leave the room. The critical damage dealt increases with each wave. There is no cooldown between casts, but a cleric can only have one Divine Wrath active at a time.

Divine Wrath behaves like an area of effect (AoE) spell, but is not a true AoE spell since it does not automatically affect everyone in the room not grouped to the caster; the spell is also inherently player-friendly. Training in Spiritual Mana Control increases the number of targets the spell can hit from a base of 2. Creatures not slain in a previous round will be retargeted for the subsequent rounds, but creatures killed free up a spot for a new target.

Using EVOKE to cast the spell will turn Divine Wrath to a group-friendly version and the number of base targets will increase to 5. Those converted to the same pantheon of the caster will also be safe from the spell, except if the spell is directly cast or evoked at such individuals.

Casting directly at another player character automatically makes the spell non-player friendly.

Leaving the room or using STOP 335 will end the spell prematurely.
{{Usage-aoe-open-evoke|
Lore Benefits
Spiritual Lore, Religion
Spiritual Lore, Religion increases the critical damage by adding a direct modifier to the crit rank based on a seed 6 summation divided by 5. For example, with 90 ranks there is an 80% chance to increase the crit rank by 2, and a 20% chance to increase the crit rank by 1.

:{| prettytable align="center"

Damage Formula
Divine Wrath (335) concussion damage formula:

<div ><center>20 base damage + trunc[(Endroll - 100) &times; DF 0.200]</center></div>

Each strike inflicts concussion (hitpoint only) damage and critical damage. The formula for concussion damage is constant for all cycles. However, status effects, such as stunned, bind etc., will effectively increase damage by adding phantom points to the end roll. There is some variability with the number added to the end roll, and because the spell has a very low damage factor (0.200) the increased damage from status effects is minimal.

<prelog2>
Within the reddish haze, the man brings his forging-hammer sharply down upon the anvil, producing a loud clang.

Updates to Alignment
As this is a higher level spell, the deity alignment modifier that existed in Divine Wrath (319) was removed.

A few deities have updated messaging and/or critical damage types:
* Charl: has a random chance to trigger different messaging which uses impact criticals.
* Koar: has a random chance to utilize heat criticals instead of electricity. No change in the messaging.
* Ivas: slightly updated messaging and will always use crushing criticals.
* Aeia: will always use crushing criticals.
* Arachne: completely new messaging that utilizes puncture criticals.
__TOC__
Animal Companion allows a ranger to befriend an animal as a permanent companion. The ranger can tell their companion to do a number of actions including attacking creatures or defending the ranger, although the companion will respond faster if it has a good relationship with the ranger and slower if not.

A ranger can gauge the quality of the relationship by GAZing at the animal companion and the relationship is established or improved by FEEDing, PETting, casting helpful spells at, or otherwise interacting with the animal companion in a positive fashion.

All four companion types (canine, feline, avian, rodent) are capable of attacking creatures (or other characters) and they do either slash (feline, avian) or puncture (canine, rodent) damage. In addition, they each have different special attacks. Animal companions will attack when told to do so and will also attack automatically when the ranger is stunned or killed. A companion's attacks are considered nature damage.

When using Assume Aspect (650), donning an aspect of a creature of the same category of the ranger's animal companion will provide a bonus to the provided benefit.

Animal Companions can be customized via Animal Companion grooming, a special merchant service.

Guarding Benefits
Telling your companion to GUARD (wait once your companion walks in front of you) gives a DS benefit. The DS benefit starts at +5 at 30 Ranger Base spell ranks and increases by +1 DS per 2 ranks, with an additional bonus based on affinity. The total DS bonus caps out at +25.

While GUARDing, companions will search for hidden creatures/players. Discovered creatures will be immediately revealed. If a player is found, the companion will indicate them to the ranger, but not reveal them.

An order to GUARD or ATTACK will be performed immediately when the companion has not recently taken a combat action.

top

Summoning a Companion
Summoning a new companion is relatively straightforward. First, the ranger should find the desired companion using SENSE, then PREPARE 630 and{{boldmono| SUMMON {desired animal}}}. Failure to specify a particular animal will summon a random animal in the room. subscription (free to play) accounts can only summon companions of the canine variety.

;Sense
<pre>
>sense
You scan your surroundings, considering the various flora and fauna found here (and noting those which are absent). The indications of the temperate climate and the deciduous forest are clearly evident. You quickly note the signs of a black-tipped forest tiger, a white-footed woodland jackal and a black-nosed mottled ferret having recently been in the area. Circling overhead is a fan-tailed branch peregrine. You also see a steep path.
</pre>

There will always be one of each type of animal companion (canine, feline, avian, rodent) in every outdoor room, but the exact animal noun (e.g. tiger, puma, ocelot) will depend on the location, with some animals being exclusive to certain cities and its descriptor (e.g. black-footed, amber-eyed) will depend on the terrain type in a particular room (see the animal companion page for details).

Circling overhead is a fan-tailed dusky peregrine. You don't see any other paths leading away from the area.
>prep 630
You open your senses wide and allow the desires and feelings of the areas denizens fill your mind. At the very edge of your perceptions, you feel a bright glow of curiosity tinged with wariness. Concentrating, you focus your desire of friendship and camaraderie towards that bright spot. At first the wariness holds but it is soon followed by a sharp peak in curiosity as if a decision had been made.
After Summoning
Acquiring Your Companion
*If you have been lucky enough to get a companion to come when you requested it, then you will have to bond with it. To do that you have to show it affection like any other animal in order to gain its trust. How this is done is fairly simple but is left for the adventurer to discover.
*After a short time if you don't bond with the companion it will leave you and you will be penalized for some time. Do not fret as this is not permanent and you can attempt to gain the trust of another in a short while.
*If you feel that you have gained its trust, its advisable to try and befriend it. BEFRIEND <companion noun> will bond you and the companion together such that the link between the two of you is nigh unto unbreakable.
*This is a bond that will rise and fall; you can't neglect your companion and expect it to be there for you when you are down on your luck. Treat your companion well and he/she will serve well.

top
After Bonding
Companions no longer need to be told to leave before logging off. Telling it to leave is only required when you need to take a snapshot of the companion's state.

Examples of when you might need this: After having had the companion groomed, after giving the companion equipment, or if your character levels up and you want your companion to level up without having to log out and back in.
Tell Commands
Syntax: TELL COMPANION TO <action>
*ATTACK <player or creature>:
:This will request your companion to engage a beast or player. An order to ATTACK will be performed immediately when the companion has not recently taken a combat action. All animal companions except canines can knock down their targets. In addition, avian companions can force their target into a more offensive stance, canine companions can disarm, feline companions sometimes deal damage twice, and rodent companions can hamstring. If you leave the room or if the target dies, the companion will cease the battle. **Can be used in roundtime.
<pre>Your companion senses your atavistic feelings as his raw untamed emotions begin to surface and he turns his attention fully toward the stone gargoyle that he believes is the source of your irritation.</pre>

*GUARD:
:This requests your companion to shield you when you are in need of some help. An order to GUARD will be performed immediately when the companion has not recently taken a combat action. **Can be used in roundtime.
<pre>Your companion wanders closer as he detects your desire for protection.</pre>

*:
:Dictates how your companion will behave in combat. Neutral behavior is the default -- your companion will only ATTACK or GUARD when told to do so. Offensive behavior will allow your companion to follow up your attacks with their own, by automatically going into an ATTACK order. Defensive behavior will cause the companion to preemptively go into a GUARD order when you are attacked. **Can be used in roundtime.

*WANDER:
:Basically giving your companion the freedom to wander about the area.
<pre>You impress upon your companion the thought of boundless freedom and sense an eagerness from him to explore in return.</pre>

*RETURN:
:Brings your companion to your side. **Can be used in roundtime.
<pre>Your desire to see your companion again attracts his attention and you feel him start to race to meet you.</pre>

*FEED:
:This will have your companion looking for food if it's around.
<pre>You concentrate on the tastes and smells of food and focusing it down the link to your companion. After a few moments you feel the hunger pangs that this induces in your companion.</pre>

*LEAVE:
:This will send the companion away until you cast it again. It should appear as it left your side.
<pre>Your feelings push outward in askance of your companion to rest. The link carries back his discontent but grudging agreement to leave for now.</pre>
<pre>Your thoughts and feelings stray outward, as they impinge upon your companion's thoughts, you edge a bit of tiredness to them and soon your companion feels the need to rest.</pre>

*SCOUT:
:Sends your companion forth to get a count of other players and creatures in the area.

*CEASE:
:This will stop all commands that you have given to the companion, such as telling it to wander then stopping it. This will also keep the companion from emitting ambient messaging. **Can be used in roundtime.
<pre>You feel outward to your companion and impress upon him your desire that he cease his current endeavor.

*NUDGE:
:For all companions that don't fly, this allows them to propel various objects about by applying a modicum of nose-power.

*DRAG:
:The canine and feline companions will frolic about with corpses if asked politely. This allows you to ask them to drag the stiffs in certain directions.

*MESSAGE:
:Avian companions can deliver messages to others adventurers. There are restrictions to what the companion can deliver. Beware what you write, most of the more intelligent companions have a slight understanding of the written word.

*SIT:
:This will let the companion know that you desire it to sit down.
<pre>Your thoughts filter outward, impressing upon your companion the desire that he should sit.</pre>

*SLEEP:
:Will give your companion some well-deserved rest.
<pre>You force a feeling of indolence out along your link to your companion and feel him begin to slowly sink into a slumber.</pre>

*FLY:
Healing and Feeding
A Ranger may use the proper healing herb or potion on their companion and it will heal the appropriate wound. Companions will only let their Ranger, or someone in their Ranger’s group, feed or heal them. Only the Ranger will see link messaging when they feed their companion.

When companions have a bleeding wound or are under half health, they'll indicate their declining state to the Ranger. This messaging will not occur more than once per 15 minutes.
__NOTOC__
<pre>You have never seen anything quite like a night hound, so you are not really sure what to make of it or how dangerous it might be.</pre>
Hunting strategies
Night hounds have a breath attack, and attack similarly to other hounds (casting a spell and following with an immediate attack). This breath attack causes a cloud to form in the air, which lingers and can cause damage over time for each round that a player stays in its vicinity. Casting Purify Air (207) on a character will negate the effects of this cloud. Once killed, any active cloud created by a night hound will immediately dissipate harmlessly.

The warding roll the cloud imposes has your TD become drastically lower, making the +72 CS in the excerpt below misleading.

An example of a night hound's breath attack:
<pre>
The shadowy cloud seeps languidly in your direction.
CS: +72 - TD: +231 + CvA: -7 + d100: +71 == -95
Warded off!
You breathe in some of the gas...

As your lungs fill with the dark cloudy substance, instantly your nervous system feels as though it was made of oil-soaked rags and touched with a match!

The sensation leaves you quickly, but leaves an aftertaste of pain throughout your nervous system.
... 10 points of damage!
</pre>

Other information
Zephyr hounds do not have "descriptions" in the old parts of the game, you are not able to make sense of what you are seeing. However, their fur was black, and they are described when generating. They were a special kind of "composite" entity from Rolemaster. Night hounds were supposed to be immune to sleep effects (unaffected by Sleep (501)), which is part of their relevance for Shadow Valley. The poisonous gas cloud is part of their Rolemaster lore, though the mists in Shadow Valley are also poisonous, as would have been the clouds of the dust beetles.

While they are treated as undead --- immune to Blood Burst (701), Nightmare, and Evil Eye (717) --- they are not immune to Mind Jolt (706).

Special messages:
<pre>
The shadows before you coalesce and take shape in the form of a night hound, its golden eyes gleaming within its shadowy head!

The night hound barks and shuffles backwards on its paws.
The night hound sniffs at the air and growls low in the throat.
</pre>

Behind the Scenes
In context the night hounds are probably an allusion to "The Hound" by H.P. Lovecraft. It is a story about grave robbers who collect skulls, and discover an amulet from the Necronomicon of Abdul Alhazred on the body of an ancient ghoul. They hear the howling of a gigantic hound, with references to shadows cast by the moon. The story refers to a corpse-eater cult on the plateau of Leng, which coexists in various realities. This story refers also to "knockers", with an unambiguous allusion to "The Raven" (about a dreaming demon of shadow), as well as other stories by Poe.

Consider: "Down unlit and illimitable corridors of eldritch phantasy sweeps the black, shapeless Nemesis that drives me to self-annihilation." And, "I had hastened to the terrible scene in time to hear a whir of wings and see a vague black cloudy thing silhouetted against the rising moon", as well as "I pronounced the last daemoniac sentence I heard afar on the moor the faint baying of some gigantic hound. The moon was up, but I dared not look at it. And when I saw on the dim-litten moor a wide nebulous shadow sweeping from mound to mound, I shut my eyes and threw myself face down upon the ground." He had acquired an amulet akin to the one in "The Mound" story which led to the equivalent of the secluded valley.

Something else to consider are the Hounds of Tindalos which haunt those who have travelled through time, residing in the "angles" rather than the "curves" of time, and materializing out of smoke as a head emerges followed by the body. They were cited in "The Whisperer in Darkness" immediately before a reference to Yig the serpent demon, and would be another subtle example of temporal distortion motifs in Shadow Valley. They have been thought to reside in Leng, which provides the way to the cold waste of Kadath, which has the shantak who resemble Terrorites.
