The knitting system has had significant changes in the years since, expanding the options available with knitting needles and introducing new tools that can be used alongside them to further customize knitted creations.

Knitting Tools
Knitting needles are required to make knitted items out of knitting yarn. They come in two varieties: single pattern and variable pattern. Both types of needles can be used to craft knitted items, however variable pattern needles have expanded options available to them.
:Single pattern knitting needles are capable of making one type of pattern only. They are sold year round at the Knit It shop in Mist Harbor, with each needle pair able to make one pattern from the General pattern set. They use the "knitted" stitch style only and do not have access to designs. They cannot be unlocked or upgraded.
:Variable pattern knitting needles have a greater variety of options available knitting projects, allowing for the selection of different patterns, styles, and designs. They can be upgraded with more options via unlock certificates, which are sometimes available at pay events and festivals. Variable pattern knitting needles have been sold at Purls of Wisdom at Rumor Woods. They were once considered auction or raffle quality needles, however they are now much more accessible to anyone wanting to utilize the knitting system.

Knitting yarn is required for knitting needles to work. Yarn can be altered, allowing for a variety of color and material options for knitting projects. Yarn is a finite resource unless it has been permified. Yarn of many colors and materials is often available at festivals and events. Yarn is available year round at the Knit It shop in Mist Harbor.

Completed knitted items made via the knitting system can take on many different forms, ranging from clothing to containers to accessories. In addition to a long list of patterns available, their final appearance can be highly customized depending on the appearance of the yarn, if the yarn has a descriptor, if multiple types of yarn are used, which stitch style is used, and if a design is applied to the knitted project. Most knitted items are unscripted upon creation and can be freely altered, although they should maintain a knitted appearance. Some knitted items are created with a specific script or properties on them, such as UCS gloves made with a Trukt pattern or mount adornments made with one of the Mount Accessories patterns.

A Knitting Bowl can store knitting yarn inside of it. At Tier 3, the Knitting Bowl can craft yarn from fabric that has been placed inside of it. Eligible cloth items must have a material as part of the base description, be a material from the eligible yarn material types, and be unscripted. Clothing found via the treasure system can be used to craft yarn if it is made from an eligible fabric. A Tier 3 Knitting Bowl can also apply preset or customized yarn descriptors to yarn stored within, further expanding the options available for knitting projects.

Darning Awls are special tools that can be used on a completed knitted item to add a fluff script to it. They are an optional item intended to elevate knitted items created via the knitting system. They can be stored inside a pincushion.

The rare spider mount has a special ability to spin knitting yarn that is not normally available.

Knitting Patterns
Knitting needles#Patterns
Patterns determine what the final knitted item will be. Single pattern knitting needles can make just their one pattern type. Variable pattern knitting needles automatically have access to the General pattern set and can be upgraded to gain access to other pattern sets.

Knitting Styles
Knitting needles#Styles
Styles determine what type of knitting stitch is used for the project. Single pattern knitting needles can make just the "knitted" stitch style. Variable pattern knitting needles automatically have access to the default set of stitch styles. If upgraded with the Designs unlock, they gain access to both designs and the stitch styles intended to support them.

Some stitch styles are considered multi-yarn styles. They will only show up as that stitch style if two or more types of yarn are used for the project. If only one type of yarn is used when a multi-yarn style is set, the final knitted item will remain "knitted".

Knitting Designs
Knitting needles#Designs
Designs allow for greater customization of knitted items for needles with this option unlocked, adding "knitted design-patterned" and "knitted design-motif" as two new stitch styles, with each capable of featuring one of the many options available. Single pattern knitting needles cannot use designs. Variable pattern knitting needles must be upgraded with the Designs unlock to use them.

How to Knit
Knitting involves using a pair of knitting needles with knitting yarn on them.

Single pattern knitting needles make just one type of knitted item. They cannot change the pattern or stitch style, nor can they use designs. They can still use multiple types of yarn to make knitted items with different colors or materials.

Variable pattern knitting needles can change their pattern and their stitch style. Knitting needles with the Designs set unlocked also have access to a lengthy list of designs.

If a step references a feature or unlock not available on your knitting needles, it can be skipped.

Choosing Your Project
It is easiest to select the core components of your project before starting and with no yarn on the needles. Some options can be changed mid-project, while others are either difficult or impossible to change after certain steps have been completed.

Start with the needles in the right hand. While some knitting system commands support the needles in the left hand, not all of them do. If yarn is currently on the needles from a prior project, it can be removed via PULL.

Choose which type of pattern you want to knit with TURN. Turn directly to an available pattern via {{boldmono|TURN NEEDLES TO {PATTERN}}}. You can also ANALYZE the needles and click directly on the pattern, if hyperlinks are enabled. If there are multiple patterns with the same pattern name, such as "scarf" from the General pattern set and "scarf" from the Mount Accessories pattern set, the needles will default to the first instance of that pattern as listed in the ANALYZE when using TURN TO. The pattern determines the final knitted item. Once a project has been started, the pattern can no longer be changed.

Patterns from the Mount Accessories pattern set have an additional step to determine the mount type. The different eligible mounts for a given pattern type is cycled via PEER. Not all patterns work with all mount types.

<prelog2>
>PULL MY NEEDLES
You pull a skein of cream angora yarn off the needles and into your hand.

>TURN NEEDLES
You turn the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a hat now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>TURN NEEDLES
You turn the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a pair of socks now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>TURN NEEDLES TO SCARF
You turn the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.
</pre>

Next, choose which type of stitch style you want to use with PROD. If the knitting needles still have yarn on them, you will not be able to preview any multi-yarn stitch styles when cycling through the options available. They will instead just show up as "knitted", and you will have to either guess or count options when cycling to later pick the multi-yarn style prior to adding a second yarn. If you do not plan on using more than one type of yarn, then this is much less important; all multi-yarn styles will default to "knitted" if completed with just one yarn. Styles can be changed mid-project until a second yarn is added to the needles; if there is more than one yarn present, the style can no longer be changed mid-project.

<prelog2>
>PROD NEEDLES
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted zig zag-patterned scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PROD NEEDLES
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted floral-patterned scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PROD NEEDLES
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a cable-knit scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.
</pre>

If the needles have designs unlocked, you can also choose which design, if any, to knit. Design options can be viewed with PONDER, which will show a different themed group of designs each time the command is entered. An individual design is set by {{boldmono|WHISPER NEEDLES {DESIGN}}}, or by clicking directly on the design option after using PONDER, if hyperlinks are enabled. Keep in mind that if using WHISPER, the designs are case-sensitive. Setting a design will automatically change the style to "knitted design-patterned" if no design was previously set. This and "knitted design-motif" are the only two styles that can show a design. Use PROD to change to the "-motif" option, if desired. As long as a design is set, it will show up when using PROD to cycle between style options. A design will remain set unless cleared by setting the design to "none". Designs can be changed at any time mid-project.

<prelog2>
>PONDER NEEDLES
You ponder over which religious design to knit: angel, anvil, artist's brush, black widow, broken skull, cat's head, chelioboros, clenched fist, conjoined circles, crescent moon, crown, crystal ball, dagger, dagger-pierced heart, doe, dolphin, eight-pointed star, feather, flame, gate and key, grain sheaf, heart, hourglass, jackal's head, key, leaf, lily, lute, musical note, ouroboros, pegasus, rose, tentacled star, six-tentacled star, slit-pupiled eye, scimitar, scroll, serpent, shield, sickle, skull, star, stone giant, stone giantess, sunburst, sword, trident, two-headed serpent, or none.

>feather (via hyperlink)
You decide to knit a feather-patterned scarf.

>WHISPER NEEDLES flame
You decide to knit a flame-patterned scarf.

>PROD NEEDLES
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted flame-motif scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.
</pre>

Choosing Your Yarn
Knitting yarn
Your choice of knitting yarn will influence several aspects of a knitting project.

Beginning Your Project
To add knitting yarn to the knitting needles, hold the skein of yarn and PUSH NEEDLES. In doing so, you will get a preview of what the knitted item will look like if you complete it with just the one type of yarn. If you have previously selected a multi-yarn stitch style, such as "knitted striped", that multi-yarn style will not show up in the preview and instead just show "knitted" by default.

With a stitch style set that supports one or more yarn types:
<prelog2>>PUSH NEEDLE
Using your needles, you loop several stitches of your alabaster yarn onto one of the needles as you begin to create a knitted flame-motif alabaster scarf.</pre>

With a multi-yarn stitch style set:
<prelog2>>PROD NEEDLES
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted striped scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PUSH NEEDLES
Using your needles, you loop several stitches of your alabaster yarn onto one of the needles as you begin to create a knitted alabaster scarf.</pre>

Any final changes to the pattern need to be made at this point. Once the first row is knit, you will no longer be able to change the pattern without starting over.

To knit the first row, use DIP NEEDLES. This will result in a random amount of hard roundtime, generally somewhere in the range of 10-50 seconds. Spells that reduce roundtime, such as Haste (535), will reduce knitting roundtime.

<prelog2>>DIP NEEDLES
You begin work on your alabaster scarf, the needles moving along with determination requiring your complete attention. You have 9 more rows to complete.
Roundtime: 30 sec.
Roundtime changed to 20 seconds.</pre>

Continuing Your Project
Each use of DIP NEEDLES will add a new row to your project and will result in a random amount of hard roundtime. The messaging will indicate how many rows remain until the project is done.

LOOK NEEDLES will give even more information about the current in-process project, including what the item will look like based on the current settings, how many rows have been completed, how many rows remain in the project, what type of yarn is on the needles, and how much yarn is left on the needles.

<prelog2>>LOOK NEEDLES
You glance at some witchwood knitting needles culminating in viridian-flamed arathiel fireflies, noticing the witchwood needles are in the middle of making a knitted alabaster scarf. At least 2 rows have been completed, out of 10 rows for the scarf to be complete. It looks like there's enough alabaster yarn for another 8 rows.</pre>

If you run out of yarn mid-project, you will need to add more to finish it. If you have another skein of idential yarn, it can be added to continue the project with no changes. If you add a different type of yarn, the project will become a multi-yarn project.

As long as only one type of yarn is present on the in-process project, the stitch style can be modified via PROD to cycle between the different options. You will not be able to preview a multi-yarn stitch style at this point. They will only show up as the "knitted" default style due to one yarn being present. However, it is still possible to select a multi-yarn style by counting the order between options that can be previewed with one yarn, such as "knitted striped" or "cable-knit".

<prelog2>>PROD NEEDLES (multi-yarn stitch style is actually "knitted diamond-patterned")
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PROD NEEDLES (stitch style supports single or multiple yarn)
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted ribbed scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PROD NEEDLES (multi-yarn stitch style is actually "knitted zig zag-patterned")
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PROD NEEDLES (multi-yarn stitch style is actually "knitted floral-patterned")
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a knitted scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.

>PROD NEEDLES (stitch style supports single or multiple yarn)
You depress the end of the witchwood needles and hear them click! The etched print of a cable-knit scarf now appears on the end of the witchwood needles.</pre>

A second type of yarn can be added to the project at any point after the first row is knit. This will change how the final knitted item appears. Using two types of yarn will result in both being featured in the knitted item's description, and using three or more types will result in it becoming "multihued" with no visible yarn material. To add a new type of yarn, there cannot be any yarn on the needles. If you have run out of yarn mid-project, the next skein of yarn can be added right away with PUSH NEEDLES while holding it in the other hand. If there is still yarn remaining on the needles, it will first need to be CUT off before a different type can be added. This action causes hard roundtime.

Adding a new type of yarn to an in-process project requires confirmation. Once a second yarn is added, both are featured as part of the project's description. If a multi-yarn stitch style was previously selected, it will not preview with the first PUSH, but it will properly show up after confirming. It will display when you LOOK NEEDLES after the second yarn has been added.

<prelog2>
>CUT NEEDLES
You tie off your row, cut the yarn off some witchwood knitting needles culminating in viridian-flamed arathiel fireflies, and wind a skein of alabaster yarn onto your waiting hand.
Roundtime: 24 sec.
Roundtime changed to 16 seconds.

>STOW YARN
You slip a skein of alabaster yarn beneath your airy farszig burnoose and into one of several concealed pockets.

>GET MY OTHER YARN
You retrieve a skein of gradient violet heather yarn from one of the concealed pockets lining your airy farszig burnoose.

>PUSH NEEDLES
Adding violet heather yarn to the alabaster yarn will result in a gradient knitted alabaster and violet heather heather scarf. If that is your intent, please PUSH the needles again within the next 30 seconds.

>PUSH NEEDLES
Using your needles, you loop several stitches of your gradient violet heather yarn onto one of the needles as you continue to work on a gradient knitted striped alabaster and violet heather scarf.
</pre>

The project's sticth style cannot be changed as long as there are at least two yarn types involved in an active project. If the second yarn type is completely removed via PULL, then the project reverts back to just the first yarn type and its style can once again be changed via PROD. As PULL will unravel only one row, once two rows have been knitted with the second yarn type, the project's current style becomes locked and can no longer be changed. However, a design can still be changed or added. Adding a design will still change the style to "knitted design-patterned" even on a project that has had its style locked.

If you do not like the order in which the two yarns are displayed, they can be swapped with FLIP. At least two rows must be knitted with the second yarn before FLIP can be used. There is no roundtime with this action. Two yarns can be swapped repeatedly until the project is completed.

<prelog2>
>FLIP NEEDLES
You contemplate changing a gradient knitted alabaster and violet heather scarf into a gradient knitted violet heather and alabaster scarf.
To change the scarf, FLIP the needles again in the next 30 seconds.

>FLIP NEEDLES
You make a few adjustments to your work in progress, changing a gradient knitted alabaster and violet heather scarf into a gradient knitted violet heather and alabaster scarf.
</pre>

If a third yarn is added to the in-process project, the appearance changes to just "multihued" with no visible material. At this point, the project will remain "multihued" and FLIP can no longer be used. In addition, PULL will not work to reverse this appearance change, even if no rows have been knitted with the third yarn type.

Finishing Your Project
With the final round of DIP NEEDLES, the knitting project is complete. The newly knitted item is automatically removed from the needles and placed in your other hand. The needles have their project status cleared, and any yarn remaining stays on the needles. In addition, the needles keep the current settings for pattern, stitch style, and design.

<prelog2>
>DIP NEEDLES
You continue to work on your scarf, the needles moving along with determination requiring your complete attention. You bind off the last row of stitches and then sever the yarn, leaving some violet heather yarn on the needles. With a sense of satisfaction, you finish off a gradient knitted striped alabaster and violet heather scarf!
Roundtime: 39 sec.
Roundtime changed to 26 seconds.

>GLANCE
You glance down to see some witchwood knitting needles culminating in viridian-flamed arathiel fireflies in your right hand and a gradient knitted striped alabaster and violet heather scarf in your left hand.

>LOOK NEEDLES
You glance at some witchwood knitting needles culminating in viridian-flamed arathiel fireflies, noticing a small mark on the end of the needles in the shape of a scarf. It looks like there's enough gradient violet heather yarn for a multitude of rows.
</pre>

Congratulations! You have finished your knitting project.

Discarding Your Project
If at any point in time you decide that you no longer want to keep your current project, it can be abandoned and the needles' project status cleared via SHAKE. This requires confirmation.

<prelog2>
>LOOK NEEDLES
You glance at some witchwood knitting needles culminating in viridian-flamed arathiel fireflies, noticing the witchwood needles are in the middle of making a gradient knitted violet heather scarf. At least 1 rows have been completed, out of 10 rows for the scarf to be complete. It looks like there's enough gradient violet heather yarn for a multitude of rows.

>SHAKE NEEDLES
But you're in the middle of a project! If you want to forfeit your work and the yarn you have already used, please SHAKE the needles again in the next 30 seconds. To unravel your used yarn, PULL the needles.

>SHAKE NEEDLES
You snip the yarn close to the needles and wind the violet heather yarn neatly into your hand. You give your witchwood needles a good shake, causing the scarf to unravel off the needles. You discard the tangled mess.
</pre>

Using SHAKE will clear the needles' current project status. The entire in-process project is discarded, and any yarn used thus far is not refunded. Any yarn remaining is automatically removed from the needles and placed in your other hand. The needles keep the current settings for pattern, stitch style, and design.
