Oteska's Marsh survived the decline of piracy and was inhabited until the arrival of [[Syssanis]] in 5006. Over the next two years, mysterious beasts began stalking [[River Rat\|river rats]], who began to turn up missing. Eventually, the settlement was abandoned out of fear for safety, and its inhabitants replaced with [[troll\|trolls]], [[undead]], and hags. A [[Niima#Oteska's Shrine, River's Rest\|shrine to Niima]] remained the only safe place in the settlement ever after.
