There are few sights more delightful along the cobbled weys and flower-lined vars of Ta'Illistim than the pale wicker cart of Esmine the Laundress. Festooned with neatly rolled bolts of fabric, her little roving shop is a beacon of colour and commerce and, as it turns out, quiet intrigue. Young, freckled, and as cool as an autumn breeze, Esmine is often seen bustling around the Shining City, her cart creaking gently under the weight of imported linens, spun silks, and the occasional whisper of scandal. But behind her sunny smile and perfectly pressed apron lies a question that has tongues wagging from the Court to the General Store: just who is Esmine?

It is well known she handles laundry and linens with suspicious expertise; expertise rarely acquired without a noble household's service. Some say she once worked in the Veythorne Manor, and that her nimble fingers were privy not just to seams and starch, but to secrets. One might ask: how does a laundress come by Veythorne’s signature crewelwork thread, unless gifted - or slipped - from their private stores?

More intriguingly, her cart has been spotted loitering just a bit too long outside [[Bella's Bridal Boutique]], and it's no secret that Lady Bella is fiercely protective of her fabrics. Coincidence? Or perhaps Esmine is supplying something no longer available through "official" channels? Tsk, Lady Bella would not be the first to have an enterprising handmaid strike out with designs of her own.

And what of the repeated sightings of Esmine exchanging pleasantries - some say entire paragraphs - with Kiolana Laish of [[Pagination Booksellers]]? Fabric and books may not share much on the surface, but word has it Lady Laish recently ordered an entire set of dove-grey linen wraps for a "private collection." Preservation, perhaps...or concealment?

Whispers now swirl that Esmine may be more than a laundress. Could she be a distant relation to a lesser branch of a noble house? An unacknowledged niece of the [[Greyvael]] family? Or - dare I say it - a former apprentice of [[Ta'Illistim Lockpicks|Aradluin]] the locksmith, using her cart and cloth to move messages stitched in code? Far-fetched? Possibly. But let us not forget: in Ta'Illistim, the wearing of quills and ribbons can carry messages, and the simplest of stitches can bind the grandest of plots. So the next time you spy that charming wicker cart vanishing around a corner, do pay attention. You may just be watching the Peacock Grapevine at work.
