;Messaging
<pre{{log2}}>Ah, you are probably trying to talk to (the target). In many fantasy roleplaying games interaction with the NPCs (nonplayer characters) is an important part of the game. However in GemStone IV, this is not so because this is a multiplayer game. I shall explain:

In a multiplayer game you spend a lot of time communicating with other users. Since these are humans, the conversation is rich and varied, and with good roleplaying skills, infinitely realistic. On the other hand the best of computer science still has not been able to duplicate this in software and so, as in all fantasy games, communication with NPCs would have a very mechanical feel. The result of this is that the mixture of rich player conversation and stale NPC conversation is rather unattractive. In a single-user game there is no other option.

We do have simple conversation abilities as regards haggling with the merchants. When you are in a shop simply click on the store counter to initiate this. We've kept it simple, and use NPCs mainly to add color to the world. But our main emphasis is on the interaction between players. Once you get into it, you will find that all other forms of gaming seem lonely. For more information on the commands in GemStone IV, select the help quicklink.
