When a gemstone is initially generated, it will have a "lesser binding" to the looter. This functions as attunement, but is considered to be a lesser binding because the player can pay to have it removed.
Lesser bindings can be removed by any player, not just the player it is bound to. So if you want to sell a gemstone to someone, you can do so without worrying about unbinding it first - the buyer can pay the cost
Greater binding occurs when a gemstone is upgraded or rerolled. At that time the gemstone becomes not equippable by any other character ever
