Summary

The forces of the Fist's army attack again, this time with some new patchwork creations including four-tusked boars, insect-winged griffins, leopard-headed ogres, and mutilated leopards! A black-cloaked figure is spotted among them wielding daggers and capable of melting into shadows, but eventually the forces are driven off...

...only to return in another attack later that night, now sans the black-cloaked figure but with six-eyed mammoth titans in the fray. Town defenders drive them away again, but there's an eerie feel as the end of the battle is abrupt. Hapenlok attempts to capture a live reaper for study by punching its limbs off, but even when unable to retreat, it quickly chews itself to death.

As Hapenlok begins dragging Ushea toward the gate, the town guard steps in front of them and says, "Look, I ain't one to criticize your travel methods, but the bottom line is neither of you is getting through this gate without paying the entrance fee."
Speaking to a town guard, Hapenlok exclaims, "Are YOU KIDDING ME?!"

The town guard says, "The mayor chose me for this job out of all of the guards that volunteered.  It's a great opportunity.  Besides, I like the scenery out here."

Afternoon Assault

A high-pitched chittering noise erupts from the forest, and the sound of movement through the underbrush reaches your ears. After a moment, a basso roar can be heard, reverberating all around you.

A massive roar shakes the air all around you, and you hear the loud *SNAP* of a tree trunk as a harsh counterpoint to the enraged sound.

Large shapes can be seen drawing near through the moonlit woods. A flicker of movement here and there is easily recognized, but after a moment what initially appeared to simply be the dusky twilight resolves itself into massive forms moving much slower than their smaller counterparts.

A massive four-armed giant breaks through the treeline, an evil grin on its misshapen face. A fresh line of pustule-ridden flesh has been awkwardly stitched into the skin of its face, from its left ear to just under its chin, and one of its arms is distinctly different from the others, much longer and more slender than its kin. Its two left arms are clutching a massive chain, which has been threaded through the collars of dozens of near-frantic vesperti.

From far back amongst the trees, a hideous roar sounds, and the giant at the treeline answers with a roar of its own as it breaks the chain effortlessly and the vesperti, suddenly freed, pelt towards the town! Almost at the same moment, creatures of all sizes begin to boil out of the trees, each roaring with insane anger, and all bearing some horrible disfigurement.

A rush of chittering can be heard above the din, and the treetops all around the town seem to boil with sudden movement as hundreds upon hundreds of mangy grey creatures streak towards the town, weaving effortlessly around the ankles of the larger creatures without slowing a single step.

A series of ice spiders, each with an odd number of legs, come flooding through town, skittering chaotically in every direction!

A particularly large boar replete with a complete extra set of tusks executes an impossible leap across the battlefield, bringing its prodigious weight down upon the body of a defender in a rush, crushing his collarbone down through his abdomen and folding the poor victim in half. Before the boar can even turn to find its next prey, a veritable cloud of small grey forms descend on the fallen defender and carry off the remaining intact pieces.

Jastalyn whispers to the group, "Roblar died, we're all doomed."

Velfi whispers to the group, "That's when you know the big boys are out to play."

The muted sounds of loud bartering from within Wehnimer's Landing, and the lonely calls of a pair of mated fenvaoks high up in the air vie for your attention as you march along the outer western edge of the town. You also see a gas cloud, a stitched four-armed giant, a stitched four-armed giant, the Villorn disk, a stitched four-armed giant, a stitched four-armed giant, a black-toed saddleback foxhound, the Neelin disk, a town guard, a tall wooden archery tower, a reinforced large wooden gate and a withered patch of grass.

A stitched four-armed giant makes a move toward the gate. Suddenly the town guard draws his weapon and engages the giant. "Away foul beast! You're not welcome here!" he cries.

You are standing at the northwest corner of the Landing. The path, which bends to the northeast as it moves along this section of the western wall of the fortified trading post. To the west can be seen a dark forest while to the south can be seen a rolling plain of high grasses. You also see a crystal amulet, a silver wand, a spear, a morning star, a reinforced shield, a spear, the Svardin disk, the icy blue Salasin disk, the Monrico disk, the Dhairn disk, the Chamorr disk, a black falcon that is flying around, a silver-edged blackened warblade hovering in mid-air, a morning star, a reinforced shield, a wooden shield, a collapsed hole in the ground sealed up by fallen rubble, a tall wooden archery tower, a cobblestoned trail leading to a wooded glade and a withered patch of grass.

A ragged crashing noise can be heard, followed by a piercing hornblast. Amidst the trees, hulking forms slow their charge and crouch, as if awaiting the order to charge once more.

Regwen says, "Some travelers." [someone was doing an escort bounty]

Nyller: "Invasion?"

Meggiemae says, "What a time for an escort."

Akenna: "No, thank you. I'll stay in the tower."

Chandrellia: "Embrace the chaos!"

Zizzle says, "Traveller in this environment."

Brutish quietly says, "We has a little breather time."

Svardin yells, "Charge in da other direction!"

Asben: "We need some folks at the west gate."

Dhairn quietly says, "No breather."

Spanir: "Mmhmm."

Dhairn quietly says, "Here comes the Fist."

Svardin yells, "Or dey will open fire!"

Asben: "For their next charge."

Zizzle says, "Some by the bridge to HQ."

From nearby, you hear Skaldsen yell, "You gettem!"

Brutish yells, "We have the Mayor! Do yer worst!"

Svardin says, "Movin ta clear da path."

Leafiara yells, "Bring on your worst ya bloody maniacs!"

Berost deeply asks, "Who we join on?"

Svardin says, "Ya wonder why dey isn't chargin us."

Speaking quietly to Dhairn, Elphieya whispers aloud, "I'm just going to stay behind you."

Leafiara viciously taunts, "Got any blood left in ya out there or do you live on pure cowardice?!"

Brutish yells, "I heard you liked Sacrifices! We have the Mayor! We will give her to you, just show yer face!"

Dhairn quietly says, "I'm no longer Heroic. Leafi is slacking."

Pukk yells, "Olgretien can take you all lying down!"

Svardin yells, "Yer mama!"

Brutish yells, "Olgretian needs to be knocked down before you attempt to attack him!"

Svardin says, "Is always good ta taunt da foe."

Zizzle whispers to the group, "Getting mighty tired here, I think I bail here."

Leafiara marvels, "Maybe all they have left out there *is* pure cowardice."

Speaking to Olgretien, Pukk says, "I have confidence in you."

Brutish yells, "Yer mama wears Rolton Fur Boots!"

Livn asks, "Where are these pitiful giants I've heard so much about?"

Svardin says, "Wait."

Svardin asks, "Nuadjha is dead?"

Elphieya quietly says, "Many are getting spells with Dreaven."

Speaking arrogantly to Livn, Leafiara says, "Running chickens is what they are."

Guarrin: "How are the gates?"

Raythiel says, "Seems so."

Dhairn yells, "A'ight you sweatshop mama's boys. Bring the heat or leave in defeat!"

Brutish: "Quiet... Too Quiet."

Regwen exclaims, "Yer all brilliant!"

Speaking to Leafiara, Livn agrees, "They're no match for your defense force."

A harsh hornblast rings through the night sky, and before its first echoes can be heard, its tone is drowned out entirely by the insane roar that arises from the throats of the monsters as they charge once more towards the city's gates!

Tolene raspily says, "Poor rolton."

Pukk says, "Good going with those roltons."

Brutish quietly exclaims, "Engaging!"

Tolene raspily exclaims, "The gate!"

Dhairn quietly says, "To the north gate."

Regwen says, "Ooo."

Elphieya quietly says, "Here they come."

A hideous screech sounds in the distance, and a joyour roar springs up from every monster's throat in response. In the distance, huge forms can be seen flying through the evening sky. The hint of blurred wings adorn each form, and their progress seems laborious, but they draw ever closer.

Pukk yells, "You can do better than that!"

The ghostly voice of Neelin deeply exclaims, "Damn you Percy!"

A leopard-headed ogre comes arrowing through the trees, moving at near-incomprehensible speed, and whirls a claidhmore in a deadly arc, completely bisecting a pair of defenders before they are even aware of death's approach. The ogre nimbly steps aside as the small grey scavengers descend on the fallen prey, and continues its charge.

A leopard-headed ogre shuffles in, uttering an arcane incantation!

Roelon: "Aye, careful of yir magic. These flesh golems are tricky."

[very extended combat; the ogres have more or less impenetrable defenses against weapons, bolts, and maneuver spells short of Roblar-caliber attackers, reaching anywhere from 650 to 850 DS, and aren't especially easy to scratch with warding magic either in the range of 440 to 460 TD]

The voice of Tsarok quietly exclaims, "Nice!"

A rushing sound fills the area, followed almost immediately by a discordant chittering noise. Suddenly, a small horde of beady-eyed reapers come streaking towards Ketsimney! In a moment they have enveloped her entirely, and the sound of rending flesh can be heard beneath the horde. After a heartbeat or two, they suddenly streak away in concert, carrying off Ketsimney's left leg!

... 15 points of damage!

Ketsimney screams and falls to the ground grasping her mangled left leg!

She is stunned!

Speaking to Lurrah, Sorlu says, "Good fight."

Livn says, "Oh, dear."

Ketsimney says, "I liked the leg."

Leafiara muses, "Well, so far so good."

Kathralynn softly says, "I'm assuming I found the place."

Livn says, "A fine leg it was."

A well maintained and healthy garden occupies the entirety of the courtyard. The air here is cool and crisp, but the bulk of the monastery shelters you from wind and makes the air bracing instead of chilling. In the center of the garden is a natural spring bubbling up several inches above the surface of the encircling pool of crystal clear water. A large stone and iron gate blocks the entrance to the monastery flanked by a statue of a woman carrying a crystal staff and a set of crystalline keys facing a second statue of a kneeling young man bedecked in battle-worn black chain armor. You also see a scorched black marble bench with some stuff on it and a large fel tree.

Speaking to Villorn, Dergoatean says, "Thank you."

The town guard says, "The mayor chose me for this job out of all of the guards that volunteered. It's a great opportunity. Besides, I like the scenery out here."

Leafiara perplexedly says, "So strange, their behavior at the end."

Berost deeply says, "Sell em in Solhaven, tell em they are historical artifacts."

Lyrna: "The guards shut down the ballista."

Speaking offhandedly to a town guard, Leafiara says, "You should really clarify that was many mayors ago..."

Speaking to Leafiara, Dergoatean says, "Savages, but also under very strict control."

Guarrin: "Seems clear of reapers."

Speaking to Leafiara, Asben says, "You should put some signs up in town saying not use certain spells."

Here in the center of a broad plaza near the commercial area of the bazaar stands the impressive facade of the slate-roofed Moot Hall, where the citizens of Wehnimer's Landing hold various official, religious and social functions. Facing the square are some of the town's more prosperous shops, still doing business with the many customers who still frequent the streets at night. You also see a scimitar, a leather helm, some studded leather, some leather boots and a large purple wooden barrel.

Morofinwe quietly asks, "Why did they just stop and stand around?"

Speaking suspciously to Aeith, Leafiara says, "It did. Very strange."

Aeith says, "Creepily abrupt."

Ushea says, "Theres one north."

Speaking to Morofinwe, Dergoatean says, "Boss man flipped a switch, I think."

Hapenlok: "I'm in front of the temple."

Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk says, "I scared them away. They saw my corpse and decided it was too horrible even for them."

Elphieya: "Which is "it", Hap? One of the reapers?"

Hapenlok: "Yeah."

Dergoatean says, "The one north of here is a sorcerer's pet."

Ushea says, "Never mind, it was an animated one."

Leafiara says, "Hap has a reaper for study in front of the temple."

Roelon deeply says, "Few reapers runnin' around."

Hapenlok: "Bring rope!"

Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk exclaims, "That the nerve of that guard! Didn't jump in to help at all!"

Dergoatean says, "To the temple, then. And DON'T KILL HIS SPECIMEN."

Ushea says, "Naw, I saw him take a few swings."

[Wehnimer's, Erebor Square]

The dome of a large temple rises above this peaceful square, silhouetted against the starlit sky. The circular building is surrounded by marble porticos and teak columns, and a promenade leads to two pillars, through which the inner sanctum can be glimpsed. Priests and worshippers wander here and there, engaged in various rituals of devotion or study. A locked almsbox is securely bolted to an iron pole alongside the pillars. You also see a massive snowy battle-scarred lynx, the Elphieya disk, the fiery red Hapenlok disk, a small clawed beady-eyed grey reaper that is lying down, a cudgel, some light leather, a wooden shield, a wrought iron gate and a glowing white stone.

There is the sound of a bone cracking, and the reaper's neck seems to almost dislocate, bones snapping which allows it to begin to chew on itself!

Elphieya quietly says, "I brought the rope."

Leafiara curiously says, "Huh."

(Hapenlok moves to muzzle the reaper with the rope.)

The reaper viciously and rapidly chews on itself, blood splattering everywhere until it goes still.

Hapenlok says, "NO ...YOU DON'T."

Roelon deeply says, "Ugh..."

A small clawed beady-eyed grey reaper decays into a pile of hair and bone.

Elphieya quietly says, "It killed itself."

Leafiara curiously says, "Well, it was a good attempt."

The voice of Gutstorm drunkenly asks, "We git to names her?"

Aeith says, "Wow, it chewed itself to death."

Speaking quietly to Hapenlok, Elphieya says, "I'll take my rope back now I guess."

Roelon deeply asks, "Well....perhaps next one we should remove its teeth?"

Hapenlok says, "I'm more amazed that I punched its limbs off."

Thrassus exclaims, "They just get more and more fascinating!"

Archeth says, "What a way to go."

Hapenlok says, "So ...that happened."

Lyrna says, "That was really disturbing."

Morofinwe quietly says, "That was not natural."

Arav asks, "What... oh dear?"

Thrassus says, "It's almost like one mind is controlling all of them at once."

Elphieya: "Rope didn't work."

Speaking curiously to Lyrna, Leafiara asks, "Never seen animals chew their limbs off to escape a trap?"

Speaking to Leafiara, Hapenlok says, "So basically, I was following that thing all through out town."

Lyrna says, "It ate itself."

Speaking to Leafiara, Hapenlok says, "Managed to punch a limb...then another."

Roelon deeply says, "Perhaps death was less painful then disobeyin' its master."

Hapenlok says, "And then, next thing I knew, all four were gone."

Lyrna says, "It exploded into bloody goo."

Elphieya whispers something to Hapenlok.

The voice of Gutstorm drunkenly says, "Me had to chew me arm off once to escape a one night stand in da morning."

Speaking to Lyrna, Leafiara says, "Well, it bit itself until it died, but--"

Morofinwe quietly says, "Maybe use a net next time."

Arav says, "Unstable, then."

Speaking to Lyrna, Leafiara says, "I mean, sure, close enough."

Hapenlok says, "Yeah, I was a bit too amazed with my feat, I forgot to muzzle it."

Lyrna says, "That is NOT equivalent to chewing off a limb to escape a trap."

Hapenlok says, "Next time, someone else do the tying."

Arav says, "Perhaps they cannot live long on their own."

Lyrna says, "That is to live."

Lylia murmurs, "They are not particularly capable on their own, but..."

Lyrna says, "This was to die."

(Leafiara looks thoughtfully at the ground where it decayed.)

Thrassus says, "This is the work of an utter master of the craft."

Chandrellia softly says, "If we can trap one again, maybe we can bind it so it can't harm itself."

Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk asks, "See something?"

Speaking to Lylia, Hapenlok says, "Guess someone doesn't really want us playing with their toys."

Speaking quietly to Chandrellia, Elphieya says, "Good idea."

Morofinwe quietly asks, "Can one of them be calmed?"

Speaking to Hapenlok, Lylia says, "What a pity."

Asben says, "Maybe web it."

Rasson says, "More like a prisoner of war offing himself to not give up information."

Speaking to Chandrellia, Leafiara says, "That was the thought, but--remember, they're immune to magic."

Leafiara muses, "Or, at least, *our* magic..."

Morofinwe quietly asks, "What about Voln symbols?"

Elphieya quietly says, "Rope SEEMED like a good idea."

Chandrellia softly says, "Some magic, they are immune top bolt magic that we know."

Elphieya quietly says, "Maybe chains."

Arav says, "Oh, I can fix my nerves.."

Lylia says, "They absorb sorcerous magic, or at least all that I threw at it."

Thrassus says, "I doubt calming one would do much... it seems an outside force is guiding their actions."

Speaking to Elphieya, Leafiara says, "It was a good idea. We just didn't know to move quickly enough, not knowing it would do... that."

Bernadette softly says, "Mebee a sorc kin aminate one."

Pukk says, "If Madmountan was around we could have just had him sit on it."

Arav says, "I don't think they are.. stable creations. Either they are not of this plane naturally, or they are built but don't last."

Aeith says, "I also doubt those creatures would ever be calm, they seem like the opposite of whatever calm is."

Speaking to Bernadette, Lylia says, "I could try, but...I had no luck with some of its larger compatriots."

Speaking to Arav, Hapenlok says, "Well, they're murder machines."

Arav asks, "Perhaps they need to consume sorcerous energy to sustain themselves?"

Speaking shakily to Leafiara, Elphieya says, "I wasn't expecting that at all."

Arav says, "Or blood."

Speaking to Bernadette, Dergoatean says, "That can help for studying its anatomy but it's limited for studying its behaviors."

Speaking to Arav, Hapenlok says, "That's their purpose."

Arav says, "Which is not that different, really."

Bernadette softly says, "Ahh."

Speaking to Hapenlok, Leafiara says, "It makes sense. Small creatures use little energy, consume little food... a perfect weapon, of sorts."

Thrassus says, "They are the worker ants of this attacking force."

Morofinwe quietly asks, "Were these things found throughout town?"

Dergoatean says, "One of them stole my leg while I wasn't watching."

Speaking softly to Elphieya, Chandrellia says, "You did great tonight, well done."

Lyrna says, "It was a swarm of them that killed me."

Rasson says, "Having a companion, not sure how little food they eat."

Speaking to Leafiara, Lylia says, "Many small 'reapers' would be more practical than a single swaggering titan, for some tasks."

Morofinwe quietly asks, "So, scouts in some fashion?"

Speaking curiously to Lyrna, Leafiara asks, "Wait, killed you? Not just took a limb?"

Aeith says, "I think less like scouts and more like collectors, they keep stealing limbs and running off with them."

Speaking to Leafiara, Hapenlok says, "They finally got my leg."

Asben says, "They have two of my legs now."

Thrassus says, "Resource collectors, yes."

Lylia says, "Scavengers, but instead of eating their finds, they make off with them."

Morofinwe quietly says, "Perhaps they are adding the limbs to other creatures or constructs."

Elphieya quietly says, "There were several limbs taken tonight. I had to replace several legs on different people."

Lyrna says, "I didn't lose a limb."

Lyrna says, "Maybe it wasn't."

Morofinwe quietly asks, "A golem of sorts?"

Pukk says, "Happy punched the legs off of something, Roblar was knocked down several times and Lylia smiles...."

Leafiara says, "Like squirrels gathering acorns."

Pukk says, "The world is coming to an end."

Speaking softly to Asben, Chandrellia says, "Oh great, doppelgangers of Asben, I think I may be scared now."

Morofinwe quietly asks, "Mass hysteria?"

Speaking to Pukk, Lylia says, "These things may be unrelated."

Leafiara slowly says, "And now we know to carry lots of sovyn clove, in addition to not casting Cone of Elements."

Speaking to Lylia, Pukk says, "Can't be."

Speaking to Leafiara, Hapenlok says, "I never do. in a fight like that."

Speaking softly to Asben, Chandrellia says, "Yeah seeing as it's hard enough to keep you healed up, two of you, I would be pulling my hair out."

Speaking to Leafiara, Dergoatean says, "Yes, we ALL learned..."

Speaking to Leafiara, Thrassus says, "That's actually not a bad idea."

Speaking quietly to Leafiara, Elphieya says, "Yes, clove is good and specify when you are missing limbs so healers that are able to can restore them."

Dergoatean asks, "RIGHT??"

Speaking wryly to Dergoatean, Leafiara says, "I mean, those who were here tonight learned, at least."

Hapenlok says, "Nobody was there to see it. I punched something's limbs off."

Lylia says, "For those who do not yet know it, you can buy an entire garland of sovyn cloves at the local herbalist's shop. Ask about the back room. It may be wise to carry them if you do not already."

Lyrna says, "One hopes."

Aeith says, "I can try and forage up more cloves to restock the herb bins for next time."

Hapenlok says, "It was so amazing, and none of you saw that."

Chandrellia offers Leafiara a garland of sovyn cloves.

Leafiara declines Chandrellia's offer.

Hapenlok says, "This old man punched something into paralysis."

Roelon deeply says, "Ah did see ye remove one of the limbs."

Speaking to Hapenlok, Ushea says, "No one saw, never happened."

Speaking amiably to Chandrellia, Leafiara suggests, "Keep it in the herb bin."

Roblar deeply asks, "Who needs?"

Rasson says, "Can also forage it around town, like in town square center."

Roelon deeply says, "Should ah witness be needed for the unbelivers."

Speaking to Hapenlok, Pukk says, "A painting or it didn't happen."

Speaking softly to Leafiara, Chandrellia says, "I bought it at the herbalist in case I needed it, I knew they took limbs so I was being prepared."

Speaking quietly to Chandrellia, Elphieya says, "Very smart."

Speaking to Chandrellia, Leafiara says, "You're on top of things. Someone we can count on in triage."

Chandrellia softly says, "I'll go purchase a few more garlands."

Aeith says, "The healers did amazing this eve patching everybody up so fast."

Hapenlok says, "Well, I'm gonna go sleep this off."

Speaking to Leafiara, Pukk says, "When I was scouting outside I seem to notice them coming from the south. Lower forest."

Speaking tiredly to Leafiara, Elphieya admits, "I am exhausted. Twice in one day is draining to be sure. I am sure you will have things to say on it later this week but for now I think I will go rest if you don't need me anymore."

Lylia says, "I should do the same."

Speaking to Hapenlok, Ushea says, "Happy punching dreams."

Speaking to Elphieya, Leafiara says, "I will, and thank you for everything today."

Leafiara exclaims, "And thank you to all. Well fought, well defended!"

Roelon deeply says, "They hae to have somewhere they keep all those malformed stiched-up creatures."

Chandrellia yells, "Embrace the chaos!"

Hapenlok slowly moves his hand in a slapping motion, and the stone hand holding Hapenlok moves in response...

The stone hand lets Hapenlok go free for a moment, then quickly moves to slap him. 31 points of damage!

Whoosh! Several ribs driven into lungs.

Suddenly, the stone hand erupts into a myriad of stone fragments that hit the ground and crumble into invisible dust.

Speaking to Roelon, Leafiara asks, "That is a mystery, isn't it?"

Roelon deeply says, "Need to take the fight to them..."

Speaking affectionately to Leafiara, Elphieya says, "You know I will always be here for the Landing if I am able. Just reach out if you need."

Aeith says, "Be safe, be well, get good rest, especially for those who went through that twice already tonight."

Speaking curiously to Hapenlok, Leafiara asks, "Do I even want to know?"

Speaking to Leafiara, Hapenlok says, "No."

(Hapenlok glances over towards the Reach, as if sensing something.)
