Summary

A bluish haze signals the return of the patchwork creatures, which now include undead in their ranks but don't appear to have any commander. [[::Landing_Meetings_-_5120-05-17|Much later in the night]], discussions are ongoing about why that might be...

Hazy Advance

[Town Square Central]

This is the heart of the main square of Wehnimer's Landing. The impromptu shops of the bazaar are clustered around this central gathering place, where townsfolk, travellers, and adventurers meet to talk, conspire or raise expeditions to the far-flung reaches of Elanith. At the north end, an old well, with moss-covered stones and a craggy roof, is shaded from the moonlight by a strong, robust tree. The oak is tall and straight, and it is apparent that the roots run deep. You also see the Adalfuns disk, a goofy celestial spirit that is flying around, a friendly will-o-wisp spirit that is flying around, the Hleef disk, a fluffy dark grey melomys, a rumpled teal sack, a burlap sack, a light blue skirt, some roan pants, a ratty sack, the Toppo disk, a cerulean kerchief, a broadsword, a broadsword, some stone benches with some stuff on it and an herbal remedy donation bin.

Also here: Mayor Leafiara, Nisme, Adalfuns, Demortem who is kneeling, Darklin, Tranquia, Nicolas, Clergi, Hleef, Giantphang, Great Lord Jahadeem, Strelkor who is sitting, Great Lord Kroviec, Livn who is sitting, Shaddyan, Lord Jerthyl, Wiiz, Morole who is sitting, Lord Blanviar, Thurgren, Dihadov, Great Lord Jackke, Stoyis, Toppo, Russvult, Lord Christianello, Journeyman Torigashira, Kalindon

A bluish haze begins to permeate the woods outside of town, creeping slowly through the underbrush. In the far distance, a mournful wail can just barely be heard.

The haze in the woods begins to thicken, though not enough to mask the slow, deliberate movements of a number of shapes amongst the trees. A high-pitched, wavering whistle drifts through the evening air.

A local guard runs by yelling, "Invasion, invasion! Open the towers! Any and all archers, to arms, to arms!"

Leafiara suspiciously says, "It's been a while--"

Adalfuns asks, "You gave me a likeness.. of yourself?"

Novani says, "I decided it might be safer back here."

Speaking cheerfully to Adalfuns, Nisme asks, "Of course, isn't it the perfect present?"

Leafiara slowly says, "I'm going with yes, they've returned."

Bloodwhirl asks, "What's going on?"

Speaking to Bloodwhirl, Leafiara declares, "War!"

Mnar says, "About to get exciting, I think."

Leafiara adds, "Probably."

Bloodwhirl says, "To arms."

Nisme says, "You're speechless, I know."

Leafiara recites:

"Join up to defend the gates, or find a ballista tower and make with the firing!"

Speaking to Nisme, Adalfuns says, "I don't see it."

In a perfect imitation of Adalfuns, from behind Adalfuns, Nisme's voice exclaims, "Thank you so much!!! I love it!"

Speaking to Nisme, Adalfuns exclaims, "Time to go!"

Bloodwhirl says, "Wish I had paid more attention in ballista training."

Adalfuns says, "Good luck, defenders."

Leafiara slowly says, "...well, small force tonight."

[Wehnimer's, Exterior]

The muted sounds of loud bartering from within Wehnimer's Landing, and the lonely calls of a pair of mated fenvaoks high up in the air vie for your attention as you march along the outer western edge of the town. You also see a town guard, a tall wooden archery tower, a reinforced large wooden gate and a withered patch of grass.

Also here: Tranquia, Mayor Leafiara

Speaking determinedly to Tranquia, Leafiara exclaims, "Obviously should be enough!"

Adalfuns says, "It's quiet."

Tranquia says, "Sleepy needs a raise. Or at least, danger pay."

Leafiara: "Looks like the Fist is on the way again--gather at the gates and ballista towers, all!"

A cold breeze springs up from nowhere, sluicing through the tree trunks of the forest and causing the bluish haze to swirl into miniature spirals before settling once more along the ground. Large shapes can be glimpsed as they move through the jungle at a deliberate pace, approaching the town.

(OOC) Tranquia's player whispers to the group, "There are jungles here?"

(OOC) Leafiara's player whispers to the group, "The Vipershroud, sure."

Leafiara muses, "...of all the times for so many of our defenders to be away in Zul Logoth..."

Tranquia says, "I mean, that's when I'd attack the town, personally."

Demietria: "Need more reinforcements at Wayside Gate."

Tranquia exclaims, "What a curiously similar-looking weapon!"

Leafiara: "We apparently have two or three people at each gate and--well, that's it. Hopefully the ballista towers are manned."

Speaking to Tranquia, Aranthius exclaims, "What a radical observation!"

Beiowulf: "Could use one person east tower at least."

Aranthius says, "I sensed unrest."

Aranthius says, "But... seems fine now."

Aranthius says, "So, it was probably nothing."

Leafiara slowly says, "Oh, they're on their way."

A tiny black mouse says, "I sense death."

All along the treeline, grotesque creatures slip into view, no two of them alike. Stitched and spliced, the only commonality amongst them is the distinct impression of something that has been... altered in some way. The creatures move in haphazard directions, stumbling and bumping into each other, but as a whole they manage to keep on course, shambling towards the town.

Aranthius says, "Okay, I may have spoke prematurely. That's on me."

Dromek exclaims, "Rolton invasion!"

Dromek's hands glow with power as he summons elemental energy to his command...

Dromek gestures at a rolton.

Dromek hurls a roaring ball of fire at a rolton!

AS: +120 vs DS: +5 with AvD: +70 + d100 roll: +13 = +198

... and hits for 91 points of damage!

A large patch of flesh is seared off a rolton's back.

The rolton collapses to the ground, emits a final bleat, and dies.

Speaking to Leafiara, Dromek says, "I have saved our fine city."

Roelon deeply says, "Seems clear..."

Leafiara says, "We have defenders up in the tower, at least."

Speaking to Roelon, Dromek says, "For now."

Speaking gravely to Roelon, Leafiara says, "For now."

Aranthius asks, "Do you think that to the enemy, we are the invaders?"

Rafy: "Heading towards the east tower in a minute."

Speaking to Aranthius, Leafiara says, "No... these aren't exactly natives."

Melivn exclaims, "There's so many roltons be careful!"

A rolton trots in!

A rolton trots in!

A rolton trots in!

Sulien: "Any ballistae teams need a celerity-caster?"

Melivn says, "See."

Alisaire says, "I heard there was trouble coming."

Speaking to Alisaire, Leafiara affirms, "Seems like it!"

Speaking to Leafiara, Alisaire asks, "Are you leading a group, Mayor?"

Speaking to Alisaire, Leafiara confirms, "Sure am!"

Leafiara adds, "For as long as it lasts, with so few of us..."

Alisaire says, "Good to hear. I'll lend a hand."

Speaking appreciatively to Alisaire, Leafiara exclaims, "Thanks!"

A militia archer fires from the tower, his arrow striking a rolton!

... 35 points of damage!

Bladder impaled, what a mess!

The rolton collapses to the ground, emits a final bleat, and dies.

Speaking to Leafiara, Aranthius asks, "I'm finding that my morale is a bit boosted being in your group. Do you get that a lot?"

Alisaire says, "A fine shot from that tower. That rolton never stood a chance."

Speaking offhandedly to Aranthius, Leafiara says, "Only all the time."

The haze amongst the trees suddenly coalesces into hundreds and hundreds of bone-threaded reapers, sprinting towards the town at top speed! At the same time, the other monstrosities leap into motion, a vast, echoing roar accompanying their charge!

Smurch: "Where is everyone."

Aranthius says, "I expected as much."

Leafiara slowly says, "And away we go."

Tranquia warns, "Be on your guard."

Leafiara recites:

"Join up or head to the other gate, one or the other!"

[Wehnimer's, Exterior]

Elbromo asks, "Who's leadin?"

Tranquia says, "The Mayor, of course."

Alisaire says, "The Mayor is leading."

Engaging the Enemy

A heavily spliced chimera awkwardly bounds into the area with its numerous appendages flailing. Its fat, ragged arachnid abdomen drags along behind it.

A heavily spliced chimera awkwardly bounds into the area with its numerous appendages flailing. Its long, decaying scorpion tail writhes in the air, ready to strike!

A cold, dank wind blows in, followed by a patchwork skeletal knight!

A stitched hulking monstrosity shakes the ground as it trundles in, belching serum from its stitched flesh with every heavy step.

A gargantuan malformed shrickhen rushes in, snarling and gibbering!

[very extended combat]

The ghostly voice of Roelaren says, "Wow they are strong."

Kembal: "Er, what's going on in the Landing?"

A fish-eyed three-legged werebear lumbers out of the underbrush, uttering a weird, half-human cry!

[combat]

Brutish: "Invasion."

[combat]

The ghostly voice of Berost deeply says, "Welp, I wake up... and then I die."

[combat]

Leafiara mumbles, "Magic immuninty, of course..." [while everything else is manageable, the shrickhen are magic immune and the only alive fighters all being magic users; Melivn and Leafi attempt to swing on them, but their defenses are too good]

Tranquia says, "How obnoxious."

[combat]

Smurch: "Lost."

[combat]

Guarrin: "Evening all, busy day?"

Leafiara says, "Well..."

[combat]

Tranquia asks, "Where is Dhairn when you need him?"

[combat]

The woods are fairly teeming with creatures of every shape and size, each moving at full speed towards the town. There is no precision to their approach, and they cluster into seemingly random pairs and trios, each of them seeming to care nothing for tactics or planning, content merely to kill.

Amongst their carnage, the reapers flit from carcass to carcass, moving with incredible speed as they carve open bodies, removing whatever organs are still intact and then disappearing with their ill-gotten gains.

Reports From Triage

[Wehnimer's, Erebor Square]

The dome of a large temple rises above this peaceful square, silhouetted against the starlit sky. The circular building is surrounded by marble porticos and teak columns, and a promenade leads to two pillars, through which the inner sanctum can be glimpsed. Priests and worshippers wander here and there, engaged in various rituals of devotion or study. A locked almsbox is securely bolted to an iron pole alongside the pillars. You also see a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper that appears stunned, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, the night watchman, a wrought iron gate and a glowing white stone.

Leafiara weakly says, "Just a sec..." [130 nausea]

The ghostly voice of Roelaren says, "Ok."

Speaking to Svardin, Demietria says, "Well this is entertaining."

Svardin says, "Chargin."

Elbromo says, "Great."

Guarrin: "If you can hop in a tower safely, do so. Could use help clearing the gates."

A crowd of oily grey reapers surge through a doorway, taking a young man wielding a crossbow by surprise! In moments, and with barely enough time to screech, the beasts chew through his neck, severing his head. One of them grabs the head with its jaws imbedded in the cartilage of one ear and arrows away, the head bouncing against the ground with wet-sounding *THUNK* noises.

Leafiara: "Several of the enemies are immune to magic, so we'll need a mix of defenders. Triage ongoing in the square, meanwhile..."

The ghostly voice of Nazarr says, "Idiotic invasions."

Nazarr says, "I was just headed to a meeting."

Laman says, "All meetings canceled."

A skeletal knight pivots in place and sends its feras lance directly through the bodies of two defenders! The weapon emits a loud crackle as lightning plays through the impaled bodies, causing the limbs of the defenders to flail wildly and their hair to stand on end. With a swift motion, the knight withdraws the weapon, and before the carcasses can reach the ground, they are swarmed by reapers.

Sulien: "Town square is mostly safe again."

Khazaann says, "Svardin at west gate with bad guys."

Khazaann says, "Er was." [now lying dead in the square]

Speaking to Gutstorm, Leafiara roars, "War!"

Laman says, "Reapers all around."

Gutstorm drunkenly asks, "We winnin?"

Draught recites:

Rallying

[Leafi heads out to clear the area; nothing in the peer descriptions above is capped or even close to it, so no threat despite their numbers]

[combat]

Leafiara: "How are the groups out there?"

Guarrin: "Melivn took care of it."

[combat, area clear, return to triage]]

The ghostly voice of Svardin says, "Eek."

The ghostly voice of Svardin asks, "Dat lunatic is loose agin?"

Speaking wryly to Svardin, Leafiara says, "Yup."

The ghostly voice of Svardin says, "Well."

Sazlo darkly asks, "What lunatic is that?"

Guarrin: "Inside north gate again."

Speaking to Svardin, the ghostly voice of Regwen says, "Seph made it to the gate."

Svardin says, "Hooray."

[back to combat alone]

[Town Square, West]

Here in the midst of the town stretches the cobblestoned main bazaar, its lamplit lanes abuzz with traders and vendors hawking their wares at any hour of the day or night. Groups of citizens, discussing the day's events or preparing for nighttime hunts, gather around the doors of the merchants whose shops border the square. The gilded but peeling stone facade of the First Elanith Bank dominates this side of the square. You also see a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a deformed spliced cadaver, a deformed spliced cadaver, a deformed spliced cadaver, a deformed spliced cadaver, a deformed spliced cadaver, a gypsy fortuneteller, a city official and a basket of rotting fruit.

[combat]

Leafiara: "Outside the gates."

Zigzhagon says, "Watch out."

Leafiara: "The weaker enemies are taking the inside, but the stronger ones are outside."

[combat]

Guarrin: "Inside north gate would help too."

[Wehnimer's, Land's End Rd.]

Vigilant night guardsmen scrutinize the citizens and travelers arriving and departing through the wide gates spanning the land route into Wehnimer's Landing. The cluttered streets of the city to the south are a far cry from the deceptively calm expanse of the wilds of Elanith outside. Two daunting towers survey the countryside and protect the town, flanking the road to the east and west. You also see the Dacorus disk, a patchwork skeletal knight, a patchwork skeletal knight, a patchwork skeletal knight, a smoldering fire wyrdling, a patchwork skeletal knight, a gargantuan malformed shrickhen, a patchwork skeletal knight, a patchwork skeletal knight, a patchwork skeletal knight, a patchwork skeletal knight, a patchwork skeletal knight, a heavily spliced chimera, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a deformed spliced cadaver, a deformed spliced cadaver, a deformed spliced cadaver, a patchwork skeletal knight, a sturdy wooden table, the town gates and a large wooden barrel.

Also here: the body of Sir Balantine who is lying down

[grabs Balantine, fogs away]

The ghostly voice of Balantine quietly says, "They got feras lances I see."

[back at the well; very extended triage all throughout]

Leafiara slowly says, "Welp."

Shrieks arise from all over town, and the blue haze drifts through the streets and alleyways, near-constantly disturbed by a seemingly limitless number of reapers, who swarm and maim everything in their path, gutting and disemboweling as they go.

Berkana says, "I was doing so well cleaning up the town."

Leafiara suspiciously says, "Wonder what that haze is. We really can't afford even more unusual magical effects in the area messing with the portal..."

Guarrin: "Don't suppose we have those mobile towers around somewhere?"

Roelaren: "We need to take triage to the Thrak Inn."

Officially Problematic

[Town Square, West]

Here in the midst of the town stretches the cobblestoned main bazaar, its lamplit lanes abuzz with traders and vendors hawking their wares at any hour of the day or night. Groups of citizens, discussing the day's events or preparing for nighttime hunts, gather around the doors of the merchants whose shops border the square. The gilded but peeling stone facade of the First Elanith Bank dominates this side of the square. You also see a long-eared air wyrdling, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a fish-eyed three-legged werebear, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bisected dybbuk, a white banded faewood bolt fletched with white feathers, a white banded faewood bolt fletched with white feathers, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bisected dybbuk, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper that is lying down, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper that is lying down, a fish-eyed three-legged werebear, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper that is lying down, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper that appears stunned, a bone-threaded oily grey reaper that appears dead, a city official that appears dead and a basket of rotting fruit.

[extended combat]

Sulien: "Outside west gate is clear, but still in the streets."

You search the city official.

It had nothing of interest.

A city official falls to the ground having breathed his last breath.

A nearby goodwife screams, "High crimes against the state!"

You search the city official.

It had nothing of interest.

A city official falls to the ground having breathed his last breath.

A small human child cries out, "High crimes against the state!". His mother then sends him off for the night watchman.

[combat]

Sulien: "Still have enemies outside and within the N gate."

With a loud shriek, a malformed shrickhen tears off its own arm and flings it at a nearby defender! The improvised missile cleaves through the target's neck, neatly decapitating the man. In the blink of an eye, the reapers are upon the newly-made corpse, harvesting organs at lightning speed and then dashing away.

[combat, return to triage]

Taktar says, "I know there were a couple of dybbuks that I killed, but they would not be able to kill me, so much bigger than that out there."

The ghostly voice of Berost deeply says, "Some of em be undead now as well, which is a change."

Daijauvex says, "I was just running to my locker."

Leafiara: "Are reinforcements needed anywhere in particular?"

Daijauvex says, "Wonder if that is safe."

Kothos says, "Oh dear."

[return to combat]

Sulien: "North gate."

Leafiara: "Hey, Fist, if you're out there--your stitcher is slacking. These latest reapers can be harmed by magic."

[travel, combat]

Leafiara: "...or whoever makes these things."

In the blink of an eye, you find yourself swarmed by sharp-fanged reapers! They swarm over your body at dizzying speed, and before you can react you feel razor-sharp teeth sawing through your flesh! An involuntary screech of agony forms in your throat, but before the impulse can become reality, your leg is completely severed, and the creatures depart with their prize as quickly as they arrived. You grasp at your newly-formed stump as you fall to the ground. [OOC: not sure what this one looks like from third person since the messages have often changed between invasions, so left it in first person]

Leafiara mutters, "Probably asked for that one..."

Raincail quietly says, "I'm no help."

[extended combat; only Roblar can really take out the magic-immune shrickhen with their upwards of 800 DS]

Dhuul: "They absorb magic. Drat."

[travel, combat]

Sulien: "Only some of them."

[combat]

Though there is no discernible signal given, the reapers suddenly reverse course, darting away back towards the woods and leaving the monstrosities still assaulting the city to their own devices. The flow of creatures from the trees stops almost as suddenly, and shapes amongst the trees start to diminish in size as they withdraw.

[some cleanup and one problematic shrickhen still roaming that takes out several people until Roblar finds and obliterates it, but otherwise all clear; eventually...]

Suddenly, a clerk enters the area and motions to Leafiara. "I've come to tell you you've been granted a universal pardon, for some reason beyond my understanding. The night watchman says to tell you that you'll be watched," he says. The official then quickly trots away.
