Patroness of Spiders and Betrayal

Arachne is the patroness of spiders and betrayal. She is the dire enemy of the Huntress, who she betrayed while both were still mortal.

Arachne was once the bodyguard of a great queen who became jealous at her husband's bodyguard's beauty. The queen enlisted Arachne's help to bring the Huntress. Arachne slipped a sleeping potion into the Huntress' drink then, when the Huntress had fallen asleep, planted a dagger in her hand and claimed that the Huntress had come to kill the king.

When the Huntress was exiled, Arachne was thrown into the dungeons for her knowledge of the queen's treachery. When the Huntress returned to exact her revenge, Arachne fell to her knees and begged forgiveness, although she was hardly sorry. She was jealous of the Huntress' new status as an immortal, and wished some of this power for herself.

This became obvious when, as the Huntress struck the queen dead, Arachne in turn murdered the Huntress. As Arachne bent to drink of the immortal blood, a black widow spider bit her on the lip and mixed with that power to create a spider-faced creature that would become a cult-worshiped goddess.

Arachne's preferred humanoid manifestation is that of a woman with the frame of a fighter dressed in blood-stained leather armor, although most often she appears as a giant spider. In manner, she is cocky and condescending. Her symbol is a black widow spider on a field of red.

Shrines, Statuary, and Holy Places

Spider Temple

The most well-known of Arachne's holy places was the Spider Temple. Inside, Arachne acolytes, Arachne servants and Arachne priests and priestesses dedicate themselves to her worship.

Cleric Guilds

Displayed in the Prayer Rooms of each Cleric Guild is a statue of Arachne. These prayer rooms are considered a holy shrine to multiple deities.

This woman is clearly a warrior. She is tall, muscular and trim with a self-assured bearing that borders on cockiness. At her feet is a large spider, two of its legs resting on Arachne's ankle.

K>touch Arachne
You reach out and touch the statue of Arachne. A soft wave of magic flows over you, making your skin tingle with Arachne's energies.

Wehnimer's Landing Cleric Guild

Located in the Antechamber of Others is a statue of Arachne. This area is not considered a holy shrine.

Unusual in its form, this statue's upper half portrays a female warrior clad in blood-stained leather armor. At the waist, her body transforms into that of a large spider. Her symbol is a black widow spider on a field of red.

Major Sanctuary (220)
Skeins of silver light swirl around, wrapping you in a cool cocoon that obscures the world around you...
[Spiderweb Sanctuary]
Cradled in a soft hammock, the sanctuary's floor is fashioned of dozens upon dozens of silver skeins of spider webbing. Eight trees, blurred by distance, ring the web and provide anchor points to the tightly woven aerial floor, which sways gently in a light breeze. A crimson sky remains unchanged and the distant ground is lost in ebon shadows.
Crimson light obscures your vision as the sanctuary around you dissolves away...
Well of Life (308)
As you sense your souls have linked together, and a sticky feeling, like spiderweb encasing your skin, wraps briefly around you.
Condemn (309)
[Success] TARGET is surrounded by an ominous, chitinous clicking!
[Failure] A nearby skittering noise gives TARGET pause, but nothing comes of it.
[Damage] Countless spiders swarm TARGET, skittering up (his/her/its) flailing form and inflicting X points of damage!
[Debuff end] The clicking sounds surrounding TARGET fade away.

[2p] CASTER's face shimmers and vanishes, and, in its place, you see the image of a brash woman with a fighter's build, clad in bloodstained leather armor. One of her eyebrows is slightly raised, and her smirk is distinctly condescending. Superimposed over her face, the image of a black widow spider shimmers into view, then fades away again. As the spider vanishes, everything else falls into darkness, leaving you blind.
Prayer (313)
[1p] Turning your thoughts inward, you ask for the webs of your deity to protect you. Painless heat surges through your bloodstream. The world blurs into eight distinct images before refocusing upon one, and you sense that your prayer has been granted.
[3p] Intense crimson light glows in CASTER's eyes.
Censure (316)
For your transgressions, disfiguring venom shall pour through your veins. Strong men shall fear at your presence, weak ones shall faint away, and all will rise against you to exile you forevermore!

[2p] Low and soft, the chant that falls from CASTER's lips is suddenly transformed into a sound that resembles the gentle clattering of thousands of tiny feet as they scuttle across a marble floor. Waving his hands over you, you notice that tiny threads of spider silk are leaking from his fingertips, and you realize that you are being blanketed in a cocoon. Moments later, you feel the webbing seep into your skin, and with it comes a feeling of raw energy, which shocks you back into life. As you draw your first breaths, the webbing seems to have completely dissolved.
