Black ora weapons are permanently cursed, give a bonus to [[mana point regeneration]] and [[wisdom]], and give a penalty to [[spirit regeneration]].

The permanent cursing means that upon holding the weapon (retrieving it from a scabbard, another player, etc) the user has just a few seconds to deal with the weapon before the shadows surrounding it wrap around their hand and need to have the curse neutralized before STOWing, DROPping or GIVEing the weapon. The curse may be neutralized by pouring a dose of a [[pure potion]] or other potion (usually from special events) that contain the spell [[Neutralize Curse (309)]] or [[Remove Curse (315)]], or by having Neutralize Curse or Remove Curse cast on them in some way. Because of its evil nature, pure black ora will backlash against its wielder if they attempt to use it to attack an undead creature. A backlash will likewise occur if anyone attempts to cast [[Bless (304)]] on the weapon. Successfully bonding with [[Sanctify (1625)]] will cause it to be marked as [[sanctified]], but it will still backlash if used to attack the undead.

Black ora is the most rare form of ora, and when found in a natural black state the metal's magical properties are a direct opposite of the white variant. Though its basic properties are the same as common ora, it holds a magical curse within it when black. It is usually used by dark sorcerers, clerics, or mages because of its nature. Other than that small bit of information, not much else is known due to the extreme rarity of pure black ora.

There are two varieties of black ora: pure black ora and impure black ora.

Impure black ora

Impure black ora is readily found in the treasure system. When found it is cursed, but once uncursed will remain uncursed.

Pure black ora

Black ora weapons are permanently cursed, give a bonus to mana point regeneration and wisdom, and give a penalty to spirit regeneration.

The curse may be neutralized by pouring a dose of a pure potion or other potion (usually from special events) that contain the spell Neutralize Curse (309) or Remove Curse (315), or by having Neutralize Curse or Remove Curse cast on them in some way. Because of its evil nature, pure black ora will backlash against its wielder if they attempt to use it to attack an undead creature. A backlash will likewise occur if anyone attempts to cast Bless (304) on the weapon. Successfully bonding with Holy Weapon(1625) will cause it to be marked as sanctified, but it will still backlash if used to attack the undead.

Pure black ora come in two varieties, major and minor. Minor weapons are more readily available and have all the features as described. Major black ora weapons have all the same features but additionally can be attended once per day to teleport the user to a preset location. Major weapons are usually distributed with a +30 or above bonus, while minor weapons are normally distributed with a +20 or +25 bonus.

Flares

Black ora has special flares, including some that seem to use the disruption critical table. The flare rate is approximately 25%- which is higher than the standard flare rate of ~15%. Because the flares are script-based, these weapons have their special properties slot open and can accept another set of flares or weighting provided they do not take up the primary script slot.

Regular zests

Idle messaging

The idle messaging is based on the deity that one is ATTUNEd to. The following is a (fairly?) comprehensive list of first-person view of the messaging for an un-attuned character. Corresponding third-person messaging has been included when available.

Your twohanded sword suddenly pulses, causing the area to be overcome with shadows. After a brief duration, the shadows begin to recede to the light and your vision returns.
Kout's black ora spear suddenly pulses, causing the area to be overcome with darkness. After a brief duration, the shadows begin to recede to the light and your vision returns.
The twohanded sword pulses in your hand, as if seeking something.
Kout tightens his grip on his black ora spear.
The shadows swirl around your twohanded sword.
The shadows swirl around Basra's black ora longsword.
The shadows surrounding your twohanded sword swirl around and a low murmuring can be faintly heard from within the gloom.
The shadows surrounding Basra's black ora longsword swirl around and a low murmuring can be faintly heard.
Bolts of greenish-black lightning spark from the shadow twisting around your twohanded sword.
For no apparent reason, you dive forward and hit the ground, covering the twohanded sword with your body.
The shadows surrounding your twohanded sword writhe and twist.
The shadows surrounding your hand begins darken and contricts savagely!
Your hand swells and turns purple, then explodes in a shower of blood!
  ... 20 points of damage!
Bones from several fingers driven through your skin.
You are stunned for 1 round!

  ... 20 points of damage!
Bones from several fingers driven through Kout's skin.
  He is stunned!
The twohanded sword in your hand pulses as waves of evil emanate from it.
Roundtime 30 sec.
Kout cowers away from the black ora spear in his hand.
Your twohanded sword whispers softly to you in an unknown tongue and you feel a strong tug from deep within your chest.
A tendril of shadow from your twohanded sword floats to the ground, and then goes darting around the floor, with a trail of lurid greenish-black smoke behind it.

A faint swirl of green haze rises off your twohanded sword in sinuous curls bearing a lingering scent of decay.
The shadow twisting around your twohanded sword extends forth a bit and sniffs around.

The shadows surrounding your twohanded sword pulse swirl up and divide. The twin columns of shadow dart to and fro, then twist around each other before coming to wrap around the sword.

You feel your twohanded sword pull at your hand, as if trying to escape.
A wave of nausea washes over you as your battlesword attempts to writhe free of your grasp.
Basra turns a few shades lighter and tightens their grip on her longsword.
Kout tightens his grip on his black ora spear with a haunted expression in his eyes.
Your black ora spear pulls at your hand, as if yearning for the blood of your enemy.
A low moaning wail emenantes from your black ora longsword.
For no apparent reason, you roll around on the floor, staring banefully at your black ora mace.
A soft keening eminates from within your black ora longsword, filling you with a sense of confidence.
Eyes narrow as the mutter darkly utterly unaware of your presence.
Waves of revulsion pour from your black ora mace and you stare at it.

Pawn Broker Messaging

Trying to get a pawnshop to appraise the value of a black ora item is quite amusing:

You ask the pawnbroker to appraise a bone-handled black ora scythe.
The pawnbroker's eyes grow dark as he speaks to you in a hushed tone, "Take yourself and your evil scythe away from my sight!"

If the curse is neutralized with either a cleric spell or pure potion, impure black ora may be appraised and sold as normal to the pawnshop.
