Crystal amulets are common magical items found on creatures in GemStone IV. These are the most common items that, when worn and rubbed, allow a character to access the ESP thought network, where they can transmit their thoughts on different channels to communicate with other characters by means of the THINK verb.

The ESP network consists of public and private channels with direct messaging capability to other characters on the network. The network is a popular way to communicate in character, particularly during invasions or visits from non-player characters (NPCs). Each realm has its own local channel, and there is a game-wide global channel that is defaulted to be ignored. To access the global channel, use ESP IGNORE GLOBAL while ESP is active.

Another common way to access ESP is through house pins and through the Council of Light's Sign of Thought and Guardians of Sunfist's Sigil of Contact (Order of Voln members access a Voln-only network with Symbol of Thought). Some merchant shops have jewelry that can hold an amulet for more fashionable access.

Each rub of an ESP-accessing item provides one hour of access; the remaining duration of ESP activation can be seen via SPELL ACTIVE. These items usually have limited charges but are cheap to replace. The network can be turned off by removing the activating jewelry, eating tkaro root, or through more unique items.
