The lesser shade bears the outline of a man and looks solid, but you can see faint images of the background through it.[1]

Hunting strategies

Lesser Shades are very vulnerable to bolt spells. The shades in the catacombs drop valuable augmented breastplates, making them especially good early prey for young spellcasters.
