Puptilian and [[Moonshine Manor]] hosted a night of service to raise funds for charity, one each chosen by 5118 [[Wehnimer's Landing]] Mayoral Candidates, [[Leafiara]] and Lylia.  The candidates answered questions from those gathered over a variety of topics, expounding upon their campaign's stances on the issues presented. 

=Introduction=

[Town Square, Small Park]
 
A small, shaded park fills an old vacant lot behind a row of buildings, the bright lamplight from the square filtering through the passage to the north to illuminate the area with a soft glow.  A weatherworn grey marble statue of a stocky human in pioneer's clothing overlooks the park, his stone hat encrusted by the gifts of decades of passing birds and his right hand half-upraised as if it once held some now-missing object.  You also see an outgoing lake spirit that is flying around, a forest wolf, an old bentwood cart with some stuff on it, a bright yellow building and some ornate wrought iron benches.

Leafiara greets, "Evening to everyone just arriving."

Leafiara grins.

You say, "Evening."

You smile.

Puptilian says, "This is completely informal night so enjoy the drinks off the carts, harass the candidates as you feel is needed and donate to the candidate of your choice."

Lylia jokes, "Not quite late enough to be fashionable, but I do what I can."

Puptilian recites:
    "Please enjoy yourselves.  Take the time to speak to the candidates and hand each of them your donations.  We'll count the donations at 12am"

Puptilian recites:
    "Oh and drink all you like off the cart donated by Moonshine Manor"

Leafiara pleasantly says, "A very nice crowd--it's good to see everyone interested in this campaign season."

Lylia says, "As this is also a service night, if anyone would like scrolls infused or checked for infusion, do let me know."

Puptilian says, "Thank you to both Candidates for showing up.  Speak as you like and collect donations as we go.  Honor system as this all goes to charity.  Who ever gets the most donation gets to choose where."

Lylia says, "And there will soon be a Brigatta presentation and demonstration of scroll infusions."

Speaking to Cryheart, Puptilian says, "So much easier being on THIS SIDE of the campaign."

Leafiara amicably says, "Welcome all to tonight's meet and greet. Please ask if you have any questions, concerns, needs to be met--spells, blessings, imbedded magic, chrisms... anything on your mind."

Leafiara nods.

Puptilian grins mischievously.

Cryheart nods at Puptilian.

Brightguard glances at Leafiara.

Cryheart says, "I can imagine."

Speaking to Puptilian, Lylia says, "Indeed."

You grin at Puptilian.

Lylia chuckles.

Speaking to Puptilian, Lylia says, "And you had a great many challengers, not the one that each of us face."

Puptilian says, "Interesting thought that both of these do have one campaign under their belts so they do know whats expected."

Leafiara nods in agreement at Puptilian.

Speaking to Lylia, Puptilian says, "The first campaign is always the hardest I believe."

Cryheart says, "Aye."

Cryheart says, "Live and learn."

Speaking to Puptilian, Lylia says, "That remains to be seen. I believe I had quite a challenge during the first one as well."

Lylia diplomatically says, "Although the greater scrutiny we both face as candidates this time around is its own challenge, I believe."

Speaking to Lylia, Leafiara agrees, "Very true."

Speaking to Lylia, Puptilian says, "In my opinion at this very point you two are even so work hard on the campaign."

Speaking to Puptilian, Lylia says, "I consider that a compliment."

Cryheart says, "Ladies."

Speaking curiously to Cryheart, Leafiara asks, "Yes, Sir Knight? Do you have a question for us this eve?"

Cryheart asks, "To which charity would ye give the donations to, if I may ask?"

Leafiara thoughtfully says, "Earlier tonight I was considering Rone Academy, but after discussing it more, I'd consider any options that my donors bring up--since any money will have come from them."

Speaking to Cryheart, Lylia says, "As a matter of fact, I would prefer to see 'big silver' out of politics altogether. I dislike the idea that the wealthiest are those with the loudest voices. Although I appreciate the value of donations, I would rather it be motivated by something other than political concerns."

Cryheart says, "I am nae political."

Leafiara rubs her chin thoughtfully.

Lylia says, "While I am aware that the nature of this contest is amicable, it is a danger."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Lylia.

Lylia says, "With that said, I would donate the funds to improving our museum and its library."

Cryheart says, "As I cannae endorse one over the other, being a protector of this town."

Cryheart nods.

Leafiara nods understandingly at Cryheart.

You nod approvingly at Cryheart.

Traiva smiles at Cryheart.

Cryheart says, "So..I shall give equal amounts."

Leafiara nods at Cryheart.

Cryheart says, "Be right back."

Leafiara grins.

Lylia says, "Something that would benefit all of us and improve the educational state of our populace."

Lylia says, "Oh, absolutely -- but that was also the first election in some time. I do not know that such considerations were as grave then as they are now that we are all more sophisticated about the electoral process."

Lylia places a hand over her heart.

Speaking to Cryheart, Lylia says, "I thank you, and the museum thanks you."

Cryheart says, "Good luck to ye both."

Cryheart smiles.

Speaking to Lylia, you ask, "More sophisticated?  How so?"

Speaking to Traiva, Leafiara says, "Two interesting topics, one at a time. I'm all for the summoning of minor demons, as I've never seen them get out of hand--and those who have visited Icemule Trace know they've long been allowed there with no trouble at all."

Speaking to you, Lylia says, "We have seen more elections. More campaigning. More possible avenues for influence."

Lylia nods in agreement at Leafiara.

Lylia gazes with interest at Leafiara.

Speaking to Traiva, Leafiara continues, "As for blood magic... I have several friends and people I look up to who practice it, including the current mayor, and again nothing seems too amiss. In fact, before he was mayor, Cruxophim and I did good work together helping to find a cure for the black blood curse."

Leafiara nods at Traiva.

Eiliriel smiles at Lylia.

Traiva nods.

Leafiara adds, "Militia captain Stormyrain is another example."

Speaking to Traiva, Lylia asks, "Did you intend the question for one candidate, or for both of us?"

Leafiara nods at Traiva.

Gorku says, "Very interesting."

Speaking to Lylia, Traiva says, "I was about to ask you, as well."

Lylia says, "I think my thoughts on the summoning of all carefully controlled extra-planar entities is quite clear. Puptilian can no doubt tell you how I beleaguered him."

Lylia gazes in amusement at Puptilian.

Leafiara laughs softly, trying to hide her amusement.

Speaking to Lylia, Traiva says, "I would like you to tell me."

Speaking to Leafiara, Puptilian says, "And a point of note, even Stormyrain never did blood magic in town as it can be dangerous.  I have no issues ith the magic, just the danger it brings makes it very dangerous in town."

Leafiara looks thoughtfully at Puptilian.

Puptilian agrees with Lylia.

Speaking curiously to Puptilian, Leafiara says, "Interesting to note, thank you. I'll have to ask her more about her thoughts on that some time, then."

Leafiara nods at Puptilian.

Speaking to Leafiara, Puptilian says, "And Stormy's teacher was very huge on the point it should never be done in town."

Lylia says, "Sorcery should not be seen solely as the dark sister of other magics, but as an esteemed form of magical inquiry in its own right. I favor the presence of demons. I control them, and I trust other sorcerers to have the strength of will to do the same."

Leafiara nods understandingly at Puptilian.

Traiva nods at Lylia.

Lylia says, "As for blood magic, it is less familiar to me. I do not practice it; I do not allow my own blood to be spilled for it, either. Yet I value inquiry and open exploration."

Leafiara nods in agreement at Lylia.

Traiva nods slowly.

Lylia says, "We have laws already; rather than create new ones that are prejudicial to certain forms of magic, we should enforce those we have."

Ulkov nods approvingly.

Gorku nods in agreement.

Speaking to Traiva, Lylia says, "I hope that answers your question in full."

Speaking to Lylia, Traiva says, "Thank you."

Lylia inclines her head.

Leafiara clarifies, "Just so I'm clear on this myself, I also don't practice blood magic and never have. I've considered it and even asked a couple of friends to tell me what they knew, but at this time it doesn't seem like anything I'd be interested in learning. I can't say I've learned anything that makes me opposed to its practice, though."

Gorku smiles.

Leafiara adds, "At least not yet."

Leafiara nods at Puptilian.

Cryheart turns an inquisitive ear toward Leafiara.

Cryheart nods.

Speaking to Puptilian, Leafiara assures, "I'll ask Stormy for more of her thoughts, to be sure."

Lylia notes, "I do find it of interest. I find all manner of things interesting. But practicing them is another matter. I do value intellectual curiosity, though."

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Leafiara nods in agreement at Lylia.

Speaking to Leafiara, Puptilian says, "Sadly her teacher Sarvia is not around anymore but yes ask Stormyrain."

Leafiara nods once at Puptilian.

Speaking to Puptilian, Leafiara notes, "Interestingly enough, she -was- one of the people I spoke with... but she didn't mention any dangers to practicing in town, specifically. Maybe because she was busy answering other questions I had, though."

Leafiara nods.

Cryheart grins.

Speaking to Leafiara, Puptilian says, "I trained under her enough to protect myself and my mind against the magic.  Beyond that she was andmore later Stormy a source of reference when I had questions.  Sad we do not have that wisdom any."

Leafiara looks thoughtfully at Puptilian.

Leafiara nods understandingly at Puptilian.

Lylia asks, "It is always a pity when we lose any piece of our history or culture. All the more reason why magics that had previously been relegated to a shadowy demi-legal realm should be welcomed. How else may they be studied and written about in earnest?"

Gorku nods.

Gorku nods in agreement.

Lylia asks, "How much knowledge has been lost to superstitious dread and book-burnings?"

Lylia gives a sigh of regret.

Gorku sighs.

Leafiara rubs her chin thoughtfully.

Leafiara nods understandingly at Lylia.

Gorku says, "Too much."

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Xorus just arrived.

Leafiara nods to Xorus in greeting.

Cryheart says, "I am nae in favor of the dark magics, however, in order to protect citizens and ourselves, some of the magical ranks should understand that magic."

Leafiara replies, "He is. A giantkin empath--more active in the mornings and afternoons."

Lylia says, "Although we have not been introduced."

Speaking to Madmountan, Traiva says, "You do not forget him once you have met."

Madmountan grins at Traiva.

Meureii politely says, "A unique individual."

Ulkov says, "He's an interesting one."

Lylia says, "I believe most people already know Xorus rather well."

Cryheart adopts an agreeable expression.

Xorus raises an eyebrow.

Speaking to Meureii, Leafiara agrees, "A very interesting man."

Leafiara laughs softly, trying to hide her amusement.

Lylia lightly says, "And I should hope they know both candidates."

Speaking sincerely to Lylia, Meureii says, "And Xorus needs no introduction really."

Lylia nods at Meureii.

Eiliriel dryly says, "Perhaps Xorus likes introducing himself. Regularly."

Leafiara adds, "Vrom is also a fine example of the type of person I'd like to be more involved with our town, as so much of our politics focus on our night owls."

Leafiara grins.

Lylia gazes in amusement at Eiliriel.

==Interlude: All Townsfolk Matter==

Lylia says, "Absolutely. Using executive authority to ensure that all people are heard by our town clerks and bureaucrats is vitally important."

Lylia says, "Particularly as we recently lost a town clerk to 'Rone.'."

Lylia shakes her head.

Traiva says, "Thank you both for answering my question."

Lylia says, "A position that should be filled quickly once the new mayor takes her office."

Traiva says, "If you will excuse me."

Traiva sinks into a deep curtsy.

Lylia nods at Traiva.

Lylia says, "Be well."

Lylia smiles.

Cryheart bows to Traiva.

Leafiara curtsies gracefully to Traiva.

Speaking to Lylia, you say, "Ah, yes.  The coveted position of ambiguous clerk."

You chuckle to yourself.

Speaking to you, Lylia says, "Some people have a talent for administrative tasks. They also serve who organize papers."

Lylia grins at you.

You nod at Lylia.

You say, "I do wonder what happened to his family."

Leafiara lightly clarifies, "Having the people's voices heard by our clerks is a goal, yes, but also our town guard and militia. Maybe I could have chosen a better word than just 'politics,' but all town matters."

Lylia says, "We should never neglect the value of such skills."

Puptilian recites:
    "Moonshine Manor woudl like to thank and welcome everyone for coming.  You quiet ones this is informal and a way for all of you to get to know the two candidates.  Dont be shy and ask questions"

Leafiara takes a drink from her iced lemonade.

You smile at Lylia.

Lylia says, "Yes, please do ask."

Leafiara adds, "Or comment, if you'd rather make statements than questions."

Leafiara nods at Cryheart.

Lylia says, "Ah, the Rooks."

Lylia says, "Glad you asked."

Cryheart says, "Indeed."

Cryheart smiles.

Ulkov folds his arms over his chest.

Lylia says, "The Rooks have always been with us in some form. Why? I think we need to look at the deeper reason for their existence, not merely attempt to pull them out root and branch. That solves nothing."

Puptilian grins.

Speaking to Cryheart, Lylia says, "And I do not believe that is one simple answer. Not poverty alone, for many in Shantytown do not join the Rooks."

Leafiara comments, "The Rooks... always a complex question. They have the right to live where they do without being pursued, since from my understanding the underground is outside Landing jurisdiction."

Lylia continues, "Nor is it fear or loyalty, although these are commingled."

Lylia looks like she was about to say something to Leafiara, but she hesitates, obviously having changed her mind.

Leafiara suddenly says, "Ah... you should finish first."

Leafiara nods at Lylia.

Lylia says, "Oh, forgive me."

Lylia smiles quietly to herself.

Leafiara grins.

Lylia lightly says, "I thought that since you graciously went first on the previous questions, you would wish a break."

Eiliriel politely says, "I also have a question when both of you are finished on the current question."

Lylia nods at Eiliriel.

Leafiara amicably says, "I never need a break, but it was impolite of me. Do go on."

Leafiara nods at Lylia.

Lylia says, "The Rooks have committed criminal acts. There is no way around this, and no reason to ignore it. But if we address the root causes that produce these crimes, then we turn the Rooks from an adversary to a weapon - one we wield, not one we fear."

Lylia inclines her head.

Speaking to Leafiara, Lylia says, "Please proceed."

Leafiara nods at Lylia.

Leafiara notes, "The Rooks have recently made a number of very foolish attacks, from an assault on the Hendoran outpost to attempting to assassinate Rodnay. Out in the open for all to see."

Leafiara frankly says, "But we should also acknowledge the many times when their more secret operations have given us valuable information about our enemies. If they would stop attempting to be a militia and provide their intel to the actual militia, I think we could accomplish good things together."

Leafiara carefully says, "We can't go on letting them try to play executioners, but... they do have some very valuable talents. Ones that I'd like to see about bringing into the fold--as Pup offered during his term with offers of clemency for service."

Leafiara concludes, "Those are my thoughts on the Rooks. A delicate and complex subject."

Lylia says, "Just so. Highly complex."

Leafiara nods at Cryheart.

You nod.

Hapenlok asks, "Well....what's all this then?"

Lylia says, "I believe there was another question, too..."

Lylia surveys the area.

Eiliriel nods at Lylia.

Lylia nods at Eiliriel.

Leafiara mentions, "I believe Eiliriel wanted to ask a question first, but afterward, Deacon."

Leafiara nods to you.

You chuckle.

Lylia says, "And I somehow feel sure Hapenlok will have questions."

Leafiara nods knowingly at Lylia.

You say, "Ah, apologies."

Hapenlok asks, "Questions?"

Lylia nods at Hapenlok.

Lylia asks, "What shame would it bring on this town if the very mayor, should she be Faendryl, could not shop at Bin's store or Tykel's without paying more?"

Lylia says, "It is another absurd and benighted superstition we must root out. I take a prescriptivist's approach here, at least at first -- require shopkeepers to offer equitable prices or face penalties, for example -- but I believe we need a change of thinking overall."

Puptilian says, "Ladies and Gents, I do have to go but Madmountain will continue to represent Moonshine for the night.  Thank you again both candidates for showing up and good luck in the debates."

Hapenlok says, "Well, i've got no bad feelings about Half-breed Krol. considering they get treated worst by the Krol then they ever could here. but you're not going to take away a hundred years of bad feelings with the wave of a hand."

Madmountan turns toward Puptilian and renders a sharp salute with his bottle of Manor Moonshine.

Lylia says, "We saw from Chaston Griffin and his assault on half-Elves what such blind and unreasoning dislike can lead to -- and it is far worse than simply paying too much at shops."

Speaking appreciatively to Puptilian, Leafiara says, "Thank you for hosting as you have."

Leafiara grins at Puptilian.

Leafiara curtsies gracefully to Puptilian.

Speaking coolly to Hapenlok, Eiliriel says, "I addressed my question to the two prospective mayors."

Speaking to Hapenlok, Lylia says, "A hundred years is not as long to me as it is to you, Hap. But you are right about that."

Puptilian waves.

Lylia says, "Which is why I say it begins with the rule of law, which is something we can control."

Wpoole asks, "Who taking donations?"

Speaking to Wpoole, Leafiara replies, "The mayoral candidates--which would be Lady Lylia and myself."

Madmountan recites:
    "Each candidate is taking donations for the charity of their choice.  We'll tally them up at midnight.  Please donate directly to the candidate."

Wpoole asks, "Is is based off looks?"

Leafiara nods once.

Hapenlok says, "And whatever pickpockets are operating undetected."

Leafiara gazes in amusement at Wpoole.

Speaking to Leafiara, Lylia says, "I expounded rather at length on that. Forgive me for taking so long. It is clearly a subject close to my heart."

Lylia smiles.

Madmountan grins at Hapenlok.

Leafiara grins at Lylia.

Cryheart says, "A dangerous question friend."

Speaking understandingly to Lylia, Leafiara says, "Of course, it should close to everyone's."

Cryheart smiles at Wpoole.

Wpoole chuckles.

Cryheart says, "With the candidates being ladies."

Speaking to Eiliriel, Leafiara replies, "Unfair pricing in our shops is well known, and I truly don't know why our merchants believe they can get away with it. They must know that word gets around."

Leafiara shakes her head.

Lylia chuckles.

Speaking to Eiliriel, Leafiara continues, "Lady Alendrial was recently nominated to position of Steward of the Coffers, and with so much information about our finances at her disposal I'd like to work with her for possible solutions."

Madmountan recites:
    "There are only 15 minutes left to make donations to the mayoral candidate of your choice (or both).  The candidate with the most donations picks which charity all of the money will be donated to.  Donate away!"

Leafiara adds, "And she too is familiar with discrimination--she did great work to protect our half-elven population and half-elves in other places from Chaston's crusades, which Lady Lylia mentioned."

Lylia inclines her head.

Lylia says, "She was heroic."

Leafiara nods in agreement at Lylia.

Shinann agrees with Lylia.

Speaking to Eiliriel, Leafiara concludes, "I'm certain we can find some solution. And I'll make every effort."

Leafiara nods at Eiliriel.

Shinann says, "While I will not wear either, I would like a pin from you both."

Shinann says, "I will take that one."
