Daybreak entered through narrow slats of his window, drawing amber lines of light along his chamber’s floor. He sat in his weathered chair, his hands gently folded on the heavy blue blanket draped across his lap. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and reached down to uncork a small bottle of seawater, taking a quick sip and then stowing it away safely in the folds of his garments.

The sea winds were strong and wailed as they traveled across and through the slender craggy rock in the western distance. He inhaled the smell of the salt air and expansive sea, and thought for a moment not of where he was, but of where he had once been. Where home had once been.

A knock came from his door.

“Enter.” His voice was commanding, yet welcoming.

A young man came into his view, quickly pouring a glass of water and offering it as he stood nearby.

He nodded to the young man and took the water, sipping while occasionally clearing his throat.

The young man opened the window further, the slats tilting and an abundance of sunlight now bathed the room. The young man carried a silver tray over and placed it next to the window. The rays of the morning touched a series of labeled vials set upon a crystal rack on the tray. The beams of light became distorted as they tried to unsuccessfully pass through the multicolored liquids within the vials.

The man leaned forward some and took a vial from the rack, tilting it ever so slightly as the light danced across the glass exterior. He placed it back and nodded his approval.

The young man turned to leave, but then paused. “Malluch has failed.”

“Did he?” He asked. “I would argue that he was quite successful in testing the winds of change and the currents of resistance.”

The young man nodded, “Yes M’Lord, indeed. Is there anything further I can do for you?”

He smiled, his eyes capturing the light of the sea and sun. “Yes, bring me those.” He pointed to a stand in the corner of the room.

The young servant returned with a velvet-lined case and a pair of white steel gauntlets. “Have you another in mind, so soon M’Lord?”

The lord smiled again and nodded. He leaned forward, took a vial again from the rack, and slowly and carefully poured its viridian liquid into a series of sunken runes along the steel gauntlets. As the fluid touched the metal, it bubbled and hissed and began to harden.

The servant’s eyes brightened, “Congratulations M’Lord. We know you have worked long on that particular mixture.”

The lord turned his gaze back to the window and to the blue waters beyond, yet his thoughts did not stop there. “Now, time is on our side.”
