>>Unfortunately, for whatever reason, perhaps Oscuro can explain, several of those spells from that list are exempt from scrolls:

>>Call Swarm, Spike Thorn,

These spells have a success formula based almost exclusively on Ranger Spell ranks AFAIK, so their inclusion would be almost useless. I don't see an issue with including them in the treasure system, but that decision is up to the Ranger Team (Mestys, Lusus and Warden).

>>Dauntless, Patron's Blessing, Champion's Might,

Making additional combat statistic boosters readily available is undesirable as it causes spell stacking issues. We'll be making some allowances with the Minor Mental list, but expect Major Mental and Savant to be similar to the Paladin circle in terms of what spells will be available on scrolls.

>>Rapid Fire, and Immolation.

I'm not sure, personally.

Very interesting. Following up on Oscuro's hint, I dug into my saved posts. It turns out Krakiipedia is wrong on this one. Below is an old post by Saltstone that works precisely for me.

It's not AS*2, but the spell level penalty is only level*5. For the capped player in your example, it's worse than you thought.

None of you should bid on that awful yellow book at the auction. To avoid disappointment for the rest of you, I'm willing to take the hit and buy it at the auction so nobody else will have to be stuck with it. :)

Subject: Scroll reading formula cracked (long post)

For anyone interested, here is the current new formula for scroll invoking. It's a bit more complex then the last one. Note all stat references refer to the BONUS, not the actual stat.

Base formula (modifier)

(LO+IN) + (stat modifier) + scroll skill + (alignment bonus) + (knowledge bonus) - (spell level x 5) - (armor/encumbrance) = modifier

If modifier +d100 >100, then scroll is successfully activated

Stat modifier differs for each spell circle, and all numbers ROUND DOWN

100 - WI
200 = WI/2 (ROUND DOWN)
300 = WI/2 (ROUND DOWN)
400 = AU
500 = AU/2 (ROUND DOWN)
600 = WI
700 =(WI+AU)/4 (ROUND DOWN)
800 = (LO+IN)
900 = AU/2 (ROUND DOWN)
1000 = (LO+IN)

Alignment bonus is as follows

+40 if you have access to spell circle
+20 If you don't have access, but circle is within your spiritual/elemental sphere
+0 if the spell is from the opposite sphere

Notes:
1) Warriors and rogues are considered not be aligned with either sphere; they get +40 for both minor circles and +0 for all others
2) Sorcerers are considered aligned with both spheres. They get +40 for circles they have access to and +20 for all other circles

Spell knowledge bonus

+20 if you have learned the spell yourself (even if you're too young to actually cast it)

Armor/encumbrance penalty

I haven't bothered to work out the details of this factor. It's clear that both armor and encumbrance add a penalty, but I don't know how much or if it can be trained away by armor training. Bottom line: take off your armor and stay light if you want to invoke a tough scroll.

Take home message? A halfling sorcerer with maxed LO and IN could invoke just about anything.
I hope this proves useful in planning training. Let me know if your results don't match the above formula (but be sure you're testing it unarmored, uninjured, and unemcumbered, and remember, some headgear, greaves, etc.. count as armor)

Subject: More Spells in Magic Items

The following spells can now be found on items and scrolls within the treasure system: Living Spell (208), Immolation (519), Camouflage (608), Call Swarm (615), Energy Maelstrom (710), Evil Eye (717), Dark Catalyst (719), Duplicate (918), Stunning Shout (1008), Song of Unravelling (1013), Song of Depression (1015), and Song of Rage (1016). Additionally, Call Swarm has had its automatic failure for non-Ranger casters removed. Also, be advised that Song of Unravelling cannot target specific spells unless cast by a Bard.

It is now possible to invoke scrolls with no empty hands, but there is a significant penalty for doing so.

Ranks vs. Spell Level

Subject: Re: ranks for 1720

ROBLAR
I think he means you usually need to have the number of ranks of the spell number to be able to read it - so the spell should be readable at 20 ranks. For example, how you need 50 ranks of AS to read 1750.

That is incorrect. The Arcane Symbols rank vs. spell level assumption to read a scroll only works up to spell level 10. You cannot read a level 11 spell from a scroll with 11 Arcane Symbol ranks, it requires 12 ranks. It requires 70 Arcane Symbol ranks to read Fash'lo'nae's Gift (1750). The formula is: if the spell level is 20 or less, it requires Arcane Symbols skill of (spell level * 5) to read. If the spell level is 21 - 40, it requires Arcane Symbols skill of (100 + ((spell level - 20) * 3). If the spell level is greater than 40, it Arcane Symbols skill of (160 + (spell level - 40)).

Subject: Magic Item Updates

Various magic items and systems have had some improvements. The following items were impacted.

New System

Generic MIU/Scroll CS

A new system has been added for Magic Items and Scrolls to allow additional CS and Maneuver bonuses for those skilled in the appropriate skill. Activating a CS spell from a Magic Item or Scroll will now grant a CS bonus similar to spell ranks using the following formula.

.75 CS per rank up to level
.5 CS per rank up to 2x level
.33 CS per rank over 2x level

Maneuver bonuses are sphere/spell specific but generally following the following pattern

.5 per rank up to level
.33 per rank up to 2x level
.1 per rank over 2x level

Note: Semi spell [circle] bonuses are halved [(ranger, bard, and paladin bases)]. [I pulled the 1625 support last minute due to some issues that came up in QC. I'll circle back to it once I've resolved those issues.]

As an additional note elemental and sorcerer spells are granted an additional bonus when wearing 1711 similar to that of 425. The calculation used is the same formula as 425 (25 bonus at 25 ranks and an additional bonus point up to a max of 50 at 75 ranks). This bonus is in additional to the base +10 CS granted by the base spell.

Items

Magic items/scrolls have had the following updates.

  • Gold rings location settings are now detectable via. 405.
  • Bronze squares (1718 - V'tull's Fury) can now be activated from containers. This update addresses some issues weapon users had with needing to hold the square in the offhand to activate.

Misc. Notes

The mana verb has been updated with enhancive values to bring it in line with the other stats-related commands.

The messaging for 520 (Mage Armor) has had some updates to its messaging to help casters keep track of which elemental aspect is currently active. Spell Active has also been updated to reflect the current element in use.

[>So then, shouldn't this also work similarly with Paladin base spells and Champion's Might, since I assume the Paladin base circle is also tuned for TD based on assuming 1612 is always running?

Since paladin TD is designed around an expectation of less than 1x in spells, its not really needed to put magic item users in hitting range of those TDs.]
