Warriors and Hiding (5/2009)

Beyond the points being made by the warriors in the previous posts, one critical point that is being overlooked is that at equal S&H skill, a Warrior is nowhere near as effective at hiding as a Rogue due to a massive profession bonus Rogues receive. Even if the Rogue does not avail himself of Shadow Mastery or Armored Stealth, a 2x S&H Warrior at 100th level trying to hide in front of a creature is significantly worse off than the 1x Rogue.

>>The more detailed version of what I mean to ask is: is there a heirarchy of racial penalties and bonuses for integral systems throughout the game? Are giantmen, for instance, receiving a penalty to meaneuver roles that has nothing to do with any of their stats or skills?

The racial modifiers to standard creature maneuver defense were posted by former GM Warden a couple years ago. I'm sure that's a saved post on Krakiipedia or something. Every race should be represented - if it's not, then it's baseline.

>>Do Sylvans also have a modifier to their crossbow cock time and if so, is it just average? Or is it more like 9 races are at a baseline 0 bonus to maneuver rolls and 2 races have slight bonuses?

For crossbow cocking, dwarves get a slight bonus and gnomes get the larger one. All other races are baseline.

>>Also: forest gnomes get a bonus to hiding in a forest? Burghals in town? Sylvans get anything? Humans? any other racial hiding bonus?

Here's a complete breakdown of racial modifiers to hiding, I've adjusted the description of them from my last post so they're more easily comparable:

Race Bonus
Human moderate bonus in town
Giantman moderate penalty everywhere
Half-elf slight bonus everywhere
Sylvankind large bonus in forests
Dwarf large bonus in mountain caves, moderate bonus outdoors in the mountains
Halfling moderate bonus everywhere
Forest gnome large bonus in forests
Burghal gnome moderate bonus in town

Every other race is baseline. For clarity, slight < moderate < large.

>>I'll stop after this.

Whew. ;)

>Since you've been quantifying how new skills affect hiding rolls more and more, can you give us a better idea of how much other things affect the hiding roll? I know it's probably asking too much for the hiding roll formula (although this would be awesome), but specifically I'm trying to answer questions like, "Will I be better vanishing in plate at 3x hiding than hiding regularly in plate at 2x hiding?" Does S&H bonus add directly to the roll (in which case going from 2x to 3x would be worth 101 at cap)? I'm trying to figure out whether the investment in vanish is worth it in plate with the 60 penalty to the hiding roll. I'm 2x hiding now and am satisfied with how well I hide, but I'm guessing I won't be satisfied with how well I vanish unless I go closer to 3x in hiding.

Stalk/Hide skill bonus adds directly to the roll. E.g. if you have 50 ranks in Stalk/Hide, you're adding 150 to your roll vs having no ranks. So, yes, Vanishing with 3x Stalk/Hide is always superior to regular Hiding with 2x/Stalk/Hide, all else equal.

The STALK verb has been updated so that it can now be used in roundtime. When using it in this manner, you must otherwise be able to freely join the stalkee's group. If you would not be able to join their group openly, you must wait until your roundtime expires.

Discipline is involved for both hiding and staying hidden. Agility is also factored into staying hidden, but not the initial hide attempt.

Discipline is a 1:1 bonus to hiding, and is equivalent to 1 bonus in Stalking and Hiding. This makes Dwarves exceptional hiders, and Elves not so exceptional.
