Revision as of 10:26, 30 August 2018

This log is from the Tales of Divination series put on by the Order of the Sphere and Scythe on August 18, 2018 from the viewpoint of Lady Darcena Wolf-Valslayer. This lecture, Tales of Divination: The Prophecy Mask contains information on The Scrying Masks.

Editor’s note: Many of the ambient noises or individuals interacting with each other outside of the scope of the events of the night have been removed from this retelling. Grammar and spelling has been corrected for ease of understanding. Actions have been combined in places to reduce the length while maintaining the atmosphere. Some conversational pieces that were meant to happen sequentially but did not due to the nature of parsing speech in the game (i.e., player A says one piece of information, player B asks a question, player A continues with more information, then player A answers the question) have been reordered (e.g., player A says both pieces of information, player B asks a question, player A answers the question) in every situation where it makes sense to do so and doesn’t disrupt the actual proceedings.

Pre-Event Chatter

[Wehnimer's, Treehouse - 8665]
This sturdy wooden platform, built of planks and wedged into a fork of the oak's trunk, provides a place to sit and rest in the shadow of an overhanging branch. A glance through the foliage affords a bird's-eye view of the lamplit town square below. You also see the seaweed-covered Rovvigen disk, a diminutive fire elemental, a varnished pale oak cart with some stuff on it and a tattered squirrel's nest tucked between two sturdy branches.
Obvious paths: down

Attendees throughout the event included: Great Lady Darcena, Waq, Alsicar, Ralkean, Kelyse, Quiso, Great Lord Jaggery, Akanni, Vorander, Kazna, House Seer Rovvigen, House Cleric Mikalmas, High Lord Beloran, Ralkean, Lady in Waiting Rendena

Rovvigen turns to Darcena and cheers, saying softly, "You made it."

>l on cart
On the pale oak cart:
Food/Drink [18]: a bottle of rich purple shiraz, a glass of iced lemonade, a handful of salty boiled peanuts, a greyed cheese cube flecked with bits of olive, some chive and garlic buttered bread, a pecan and caramel topped roll, a large bowl of nutty toffee popcorn, a berry-filled lemon finger cookie, a cup of rich dark roast coffee, a slice of raspberry-iced white chocolate cake, a grilled ear of corn, a mug of cold strawberry punch, a shot of well aged whiskey, a green pepper and mushroom kabob, a plate of mint garnished lamb, a blood orange, a crisp lemon basil and red bean salad, a bottle of lightly spiced mulled plum wine
Total items: 18

Speaking to Rovvigen, Darcena teases, "Did you get me anything I would like?"

Darcena gazes thoughtfully at a varnished pale oak cart.

Jaggery drank mulled plum wine. Vorander drank iced lemonade and ate white chocolate cake. Akanni drank iced lemonade and ate white chocolate cake. Keylse ate chive and garlic buttered bread. Darcena drank a shot of well aged whiskey. Rendena held cherry lemonade and a butternut squash pasta medley.

Rovvigen softly says, "I hope everyone is well, we will get started shortly."

Speaking quietly to Akanni, Vorander says, "Nothing like cake and lemonade after a walk through the sewers."

Vorander and Akanni chuckle while Jaggery grins.

Rovvigen recites softly:

"Thanks for coming out this evening to Tales of Divination: Prophecy Mask. Tonight I will be giving a short lecture about what the Prophecy Mask is, the different types, and what the Seer goes through during a reading.”

The Masks

Rovvigen recites softly, pausing and taking breaks as necessary, smiling throughout:

"As far as I know, the first mask to have surfaced in the Lands was about 5105 at the Ebon Gate Festival. Since then, there have only been five more to surface, with the last one being handed out as a prize during the GHULE game in Ebon Gate last year. That leads me back to the year 5105. Dark Lady Bone released the feathered brass fox mask. This mask was the first of its kind and the details of this mask are beautiful, if I do say so myself. The details behind the mask are this: An intricately incised brass framework has been layered over butter-soft leather of a pale tan hue to create a stylized fox face. A reddish leaf-and-star pattern has been painted across the leather in such a way that, interrupted as it is by the lines of the brass framework, it looks like fur. A twisted sigil has been painted in black and silver on the brow. At the edges of the mask, long black-barred grey feathers spread outward in a wide, wild mane."

Rovvigen softly asks, "Has anyone here heard of Charna?"

Rovvigen smiles.

Darcena nods at Rovvigen.

Rendena softly says, "Yes."

Rovvigen nods.

Vorander shakes his head.

Rovvigen softly says, "She is the current owner of the fox mask."

Vorander bites his lip.

Rovvigen softly says, "But if I am not mistaken she has retired from the lands about two years now and taken the mask with her.“

Rovvigen softly says, "But now we will move on to the second mask."

Rovvigen smiles.

Rovvigen recites softly:

"This next mask is said to be missing in the lands and no one has seen it since it has surfaced. This would be the ornate blood eagle mask.”

Rendena softly says, "Interesting."

Vorander says, "Scavenger hunt."

Rovvigen recites softly:

"The third mask is a bronze and copper jackal mask. The current owner of it is a well known bard named Archales. These masks have a special loresong which we will get to later.”

Mikalmas says, "The loresong is chilling. If you haven’t heard it, it’s worth staying for."

Rovvigen recites softly:

"The other one would be that of a silver-framed leather crow mask owned by Zuzana. That leaves us to the last 2 Prophecy Mask in the lands. Now this next one is my favorite:”

Rovvigen recites softly:

    "An ora-framed leather wolf mask.”

Mikalmas says, smirking, "Let me guess, you own it."

Darcena smiles at Rovvigen.

Rovvigen taps an ora-framed leather wolf mask, which is in his right hand.

Rovvigen nods at Mikalmas.

Mikalmas says, grinning, "Rather WE own it."

Rovvigen softly says, "Actually the Order owns it."

Rovvigen shows Darcena, Ralkean, Kelyse, Jaggery, Akanni, Vorander, and Mikalmas his leather wolf mask, which he is holding in his right hand. Images of stars and willow leaves have been incised along the strips of pale grey ora that cover and shape the exterior of the wolf mask. The leather beneath is tanned to a fine, supple softness and dyed chocolate brown. Two disks, each half mistwood and half ebony, hang on a leather thong to rest just above the right eye. A black and silver sigil has been painted on the brow. A few bloodstains mar the bottom edge of the mask.

Rovvigen smiles.

Mikalmas says, "This mask was previously owned by Belnia. The Sphere and Scythe obtained it sometime last year."

Speaking to Rovvigen, Vorander says, "Magnificent."

Rovvigen softly says, "As you can see each of these mask is extremely detailed but the last one for some reason is not."

Speaking softly to Vorander and smiling, Rovvigen says, "Appreciate it."

Rovvigen recites softly:

"The last one of 6 that have surfaced in the Lands was given away last year at Ebon Gate during a GHULE game"

Rovvigen recites softly:

"A blackish grey petrified wood mask inset with chips of bone and shadowglass.”

Rovvigen softly says, smiling, "Actually the owner of this mask, Aquarrist, was scared of the ora-framed leather wolf mask when she loresang to it for me during a storytime event in the Monsoon Jungle with Havelia. She has not been seen since.”

Mikalmas says, “Aquarrist was never quite comfortable with it, and that will become evident when I retell Latoris' tale."

Rovvigen recites softly:

"The mask can be worn for divination once every 24 hours. The masks will cause the wearer to black out. While they are, they will unknowingly proclaim a prophecy."

Loresong

Rovvigen recites softly, smiling:

"Mikalmas, Priest of Gosaena will now retell the loresong of the Prophecy Masks"

Mikalmas says, "I did not sing the mask myself. It was sang by a friend of the Order. I preserved his vision for posterity and I will attempt to retell it here. So bear with me. Its worth the wait."

Mikalmas grins.

Rovvigen smiles at Mikalmas.

Vorander, Rovvigen, and Kelyse turns an inquisitive ear toward Mikalmas.

Darcena cocks her head.

Mikalmas says, "The first thing, when Latoris began to sing, was this: A haze of pale rainbow hues shimmered around the mask briefly. He confided in me that chaotic impressions swirled through his senses -- vibrations of war and of healing, of natural forces and triumph, of loss and pent emotion, of elemental powers and bloodshed, of magic and of commonplace things. Unraveling the truth of the mask was like trying to thread a maze that changes with every step he traveled. Even the most basic of properties, such as the mask's weight and value, were perfect ciphers to him. There was a pause after he finished the first verse. Something felt different. An energy from him I had never felt before. Suddenly, his eyes turned pitch black, and he shrieked, ‘A hazel-eyed martyr of the past, a hazel-eyed martyr of the past!’.”

Darcena squints and Vorander shifts his weight.

Mikalmas says, "Then, he closed his eyes tightly, and they had returned to their normal hue when he opened them again. In a quivering voice, he revealed more to me. He saw a human man garbed in somber grey sort through a stack of half-finished masks by the near-total darkness of a sky lit only by stars. Raising each mask in turn to his face, he peered through its eyeholes briefly and then sketched a symbol upon its brow with a paintbrush, chanting, ‘Power of prophecy, come to this visage.’. The stars wheeled overhead, and the night split open, allowing a unicorn as pale as moonlight to crawl forth. Voices filled his head, crying wildly, ‘A hazel-eyed martyr of the past, a hazel-eyed martyr of the past!’ Chaos layered over chaos, and the unicorn went running off as the sky cracked like an egg. Out of that egg, the real world returned to him. That vision was over. However, he felt there was still more to the story, more to be learned. And despite the cold nature of the mask, and his own trepidation, he reluctantly continued... He then paused for a moment at the end of the next verse and cocked his head to the side as if listening to something far away. Then, nodding vigorously, he said, ‘I will follow you. You know the way.’.”

Mikalmas says, "He reported a night breeze pushed through a field of larkspur. At the center of the field, a half-elven woman amused herself by playing with the blossoms as if they were dolls. Sometimes softly, sometimes sharply, she voiced the interactions between the various flowers, and her pearl grey eyes reflected the moonlight with luminous brilliance whenever she looked skyward. Growing bored with the game, she informed one of the flowers, ‘I know! Let's see Daddy!’ Plucking the flower, she skipped down the hill, not realizing that a group of sunny yellow soldiers were watching from the branches of a nearby tree. When she was gone, the soldiers swarmed down and gathered up the larkspur, but each stalk remained linked to its root system, producing a great, shimmering network of rootlets on the hill. From that web, a bald assassin arose, saying, ‘Follow me. I know the way.’ Then the hill and everyone on it were swallowed by fire. Latoris then looked a bit pale as he stared into nowhere for a long moment. I had started to become concerned for his health and safety. But, then, rather abruptly…”

Darcena cocks her head at Mikalmas.

Rovvigen nods understandingly.

Mikalmas yells, "Words then spilled forth from his mouth: ‘Daddy, Daddy, Daddy!’”

Darcena frowns.

Mikalmas says, "He saw a half-elven woman running through the door of a cottage. Latoris' face grew dark and cold as he continued... Immediately, the human man was on his feet, blocking the woman's approach toward the counter where he has been working. ‘I told you never to disturb me at night!’ he roared. ‘Stay outside. Outside!’.”

Rovvigen softly says, "I guess I should have warned everyone about the loresong first."

Rovvigen weeps softly, quiet tears falling from his eyes.

Mikalmas says, "With a trembling, broken voice, the young woman responded: ‘But the flowers said —‘ she faltered, holding up a larkspur by way of explanation."

Vorander turns an inquisitive ear toward Mikalmas.

Rovvigen collects a piece of crimson-tinted wilted larkspur from a large compartment inside the agate-inlaid case.

Rovvigen taps a piece of crimson-tinted wilted larkspur, which is in his left hand.

Mikalmas exclaims, "Coldly, the father responded, ‘Charl's spasmed whale, why do you think I care?’ her father cursed. ‘I can feel the masks awakening! I can feel them aligning to prophecy! I don't have time for this -- I don't have time for you!’”

Mikalmas says, "With the naïveté of youth, the daughter responded, ‘But -- but —‘ the woman faltered, pushing closer. He lashed out backhand. The flower went tumbling to the floor as his signet ring tore a furrow through the skin on the back of the girl’s hand. Two scarlet drops flew through the air. One stained only the floor, but the other struck one of the masks."

Darcena growls ferociously!

Rovvigen agrees with Darcena.

Mikalmas nods.

Mikalmas says, "Cold as he was, he responded curtly. If her father was angry before, he was livid now. Before her horrified eyes, he cuts the mask into little shreds. ‘You tainted it. You ruined it,’ he ground out between his teeth. ‘Get out. Get OUT!’. When Latoris finished his verse, a mask of dripping blood suddenly covered his face, framing his eyes, cheeks, and lips in brilliant crimson. Then, it vanished, leaving Latoris' face unmarked. Then he recalled the rest of the vision. A human slept on a cot. His daughter rose from her nest of blankets on the floor and peeked briefly through the heavy curtains at the sunlight outside before tiptoeing out of the room. With a purloined key, she opened the cabinet, and then she stood looking at the rows and rows of masks. Leaving the cabinet door open, she knelt and reached under the cabinet. Rising, she had a bedraggled stalk of larkspur in one hand. ‘Daddy likes them more than me,’ she whispered to the larkspur."

Darcena huskily growls, "He needs to die."

Rovvigen peers quizzically at Darcena.

Vorander asks, "Die?"

Darcena adamantly snarls, "He should not have treated his daughter like that."

Vorander and Rovvigen agree with Darcena.

Mikalmas quietly says, “’Daddy likes them more than me,’ she said again. ‘Daddy likes them more than me,’ she said a third time."

Speaking quietly to Darcena, Vorander says, "Die is rather harsh."

Darcena glances suspiciously at Vorander.

Vorander starts chuckling at Darcena!

Mikalmas loudly says, "Then she pressed the key into her hand until the skin broke and the blood started flowing."

Rovvigen sighs.

Mikalmas says, "Using her larkspur as a paintbrush, she dabbed blood on every mask."

Rovvigen nods knowingly.

Mikalmas says, "Then she decorated the outside of the cabinet, ripping the wound wider each time the flow stemmed. After that came the bedroom door, and the wall, and the counter, by which time blood flowed freely from half a dozen cuts on her left arm. She staggered, stumbled, and collapsed heavily to the ground. As she fell unconscious, the vision released Latoris without any attempt to tangle him further in its chaos. And that is how the story ends."

Rovvigen softly says, "Every mask does has a mark of blood on it indeed."

Speaking to Rovvigen, Vorander says, "I noticed yours did."

Rovvigen nods at Vorander, weeping softly, quiet tears falling from his eyes.

Mikalmas says, "He dare not tell it again, so I try to preserve it for posterity. It was a most unpleasant experience for him."

Rovvigen softly says, smiling, “My apologies to everyone for the story, I should have warned everyone."

Mikalmas says, "Just as Aquarrist experienced."

Rovvigen agrees with Mikalmas.

Darcena raises her hand.

Rovvigen peers quizzically at you.

Rovvigen softly asks, "Yes?"

Darcena asks, "Does each mask share a piece of this same story?"

Rovvigen softly says, "The story is the same for all the masks but we never confirmed the sixth."

Rovvigen softly says, "That is owned by Aquarrist."

Mikalmas says, "We are still looking for her."

Rovvigen nods at Mikalmas.

Darcena nods.

Mikalmas says, "These all were from that same cabinet, obviously. But no mention of the father or what happened to him."

Darcena muses, "Or what happened to her."

Mikalmas says, "I suspect an unpleasant end, much like the warriors on the hill."

Mikalmas agrees with you.

Rovvigen recites softly, smiling:

"I will now be passing around the larkspur from the loresong if everyone has interest in it, then give a demonstration of the mask"

Speaking softly to Kelyse, Rovvigen says, "Take it and pass it along please."

Mikalmas says, "Havelia is a storyteller, a crafter. She gifted Rovvigen with this larkspur after the story of the mask was told in the Monsoon Jungle some time ago."

Rovvigen hands Kelyse the crimson-tinted wilted larkspur who hands it to Darcena, then it is passed to Akanni, Vorander, and Rendena. It smells like a piece of crimson-tinted wilted larkspur and looks like crimson-tinted wilted larkspur. When everyone has a chance to look at it, it is passed back to Rovvigen who plops a piece of crimson-tinted wilted larkspur into a large compartment inside the agate-inlaid case.

Mikalmas says, "One final task the mask reveals this evening. Rovvigen will prophesy. And I will interpret."

Mikalmas asks, raising an eyebrow in Rendena’s direction, "We need a Sentinel. Can you serve?"

Rendena nods.

Mikalmas nods at Rendena.

Rovvigen bows to Rendena.

Mikalmas says, "Rendena will serve as Sentinel for Rovvigen's prophecy. And I will interpret."

Mikalmas kneels down.

Mikalmas removes a malformed white rabbit candle from in his silver reliquary, carefully placing it on the ground. He then lights a malformed white rabbit candle.

Mikalmas says, "Everyone gaze at the candle if you have never before."

Mikalmas, Vorander, Akanni, and Rovvigen gazes for a long moment into a malformed white rabbit candle's flame.
The white rabbit candle's flame flares with sudden brilliance.
Mikalmas snuffs out a malformed white rabbit candle, picks it up, and puts it in his silver reliquary.

Mask Demonstration

Rovvigen recites softly:

"The demonstration of the mask will now commence.”

Rovvigen fits his leather wolf mask carefully onto his face.

Mikalmas looks thoughtfully at Rovvigen.

Mikalmas raises an eyebrow in Rovvigen's direction.

In a liquid, rhythmic voice, Rovvigen says, "The union of the desert and stag will not bring you fear. This is a dream on the slim verge of waking." Then, Rovvigen's eyes roll back in his head, and he collapses to the floor as he passes out.

Mikalmas says, "Oh."

Rendena rubs Rovvigen tenderly.

Mikalmas says, "So sayeth the prophet. And a keen voice to be heard for sure. The union of the desert and stag will not bring you fear. This is a dream on the slim verge of waking. So sayeth the prophet through the mask.”

Waq says, "I want some of what Rovvigen is smokin'."

Speaking to Mikalmas, Vorander asks, "What does it mean?"

Mikalmas says, "Look. I can tell you quite clearly. Most of you know there is a storm brewing in the landing."

Vorander glances up and shrugs

Rendena softly asks, "What is stag and desert?"

Mikalmas says, "The union of the desert and the stag. The union of the Turamzzyrian Empire and the Vaalorans. The battle over the Elven village. The desert represents the sea of fire. Tammzyr. The stag represents the Vaaloran elves. We should not fear the two."

Vorander nods understandingly.

Waq asks, "Are we discussing the new fort?"

Mikalmas nods.

Mikalmas says, "The vision is."

Rovvigen begins to twitch.

Vorander asks, "New fort?"

Mikalmas says, "We should not fear the Vaalorians, or the Human Empire."

Darcena frowns at Mikalmas.

Mikalmas says, "What is unknown still is the dream on the slim verge of waking."

Waq asks, "Did it say anything about building the fort on a raft and setting it adrift in the bay?"

Mikalmas says, "That is the inhabitants of the elven village. They’re the dream on the verge of waking. Destiny of this all depends on them. For the fate of us all is in their hands. So sayeth the mask, through the energy of Jastev's chosen.”

Mikalmas points at Rovvigen.

Rendena nods, rubbing Rovvigen tenderly, softly saying, "Its ok that you are all here for me."

Darcena ponders the meaning of Rovvigen's existence.

Mikalmas says, "The voice speaks clearly, and it speaks loudly."

Rovvigen coughs, stands up, and dusts himself off.

Vorander clears his throat, glancing at Rovvigen, and smiles.

Waq says, sighing, "Having my fate in the hands of elves is less than encouraging."

Mikalmas says, "Not your fate, sir. Their fate."

Waq says, "Huh,” and asks, “Whose?”

Mikalmas says, "How they see, how they feel."

Rovvigen takes off an ora-framed leather wolf mask, plopping it into a large compartment inside the agate-inlaid case.

Mikalmas says, "The two giants are fighting over an anthill. They tend to ignore the ants."

Rovvigen softly says, "Those visions always make me exhausted."

Mikalmas says, "But their voice is just as important in this as any."

Waq says, "The ants always win and they always outlast."

Mikalmas says, "But each ignore the dream of the ants, the elves settled in the village now."

Mikalmas gazes through the crystalline lens of his monocle, his eyes roving over every inch of Waq and Darcena.

Mikalmas says, "The truth speaks for itself."

Waq asks, "Doesn't take long to look at every inch of me does it?"

Darcena stares at Waq and bursts out in laughter, snorting amber whiskey through her nose.

Rovvigen recites softly:

"On behalf of the Order of the Sphere and Scythe we want to thank each of you for coming out tonight"

Mikalmas says, "Hear my words, and let me prophesy, which I do rarely."

Darcena cocks her head at Mikalmas.

Rovvigen softly says, "Hopefully you wont have bad dreams about the loresong."

Mikalmas says, "There are two giants on a playground, battling for an anthill."

Rovvigen agrees with Mikalmas.

Speaking softly to Rovvigen, Darcena says, nodding, "I always have bad dreams."

(Darcena nods solemnly and her eyes seem a little greener for a moment or two.)

Mikalmas says, "The anthill will speak, and their voice will be heard. The Sphere and Scythe will stand with the ants. We will stand with the outcast and the marginalized. Our support will be by their will. Little as it may be. The two major powers in this conflict have chosen their sides."

Rovvigen softly says, "Thanks again everyone."

Speaking to Mikalmas, Vorander asks, "Tell me, why do you call them the ants?"

Waq says, "I will think on what you prophocized."

Darcena asks, peering at Rovvigen, "May I... May I touch it?"

Mikalmas says, "Without regard to the lesser of themselves involved. But destiny will prevail in their favor. So speaks the mask of prophecy, so says the Order of the Sphere and Scythe."

Rovvigen softly asks, "The mask?"

Darcena nods at Rovvigen.

Rovvigen collects an ora-framed leather wolf mask from a large compartment inside the agate-inlaid case. Rovvigen offers Darcena an ora-framed leather wolf mask. Darcena accepts Rovvigen's offer and are now holding an ora-framed leather wolf mask. Darcena sniffs the mask, analyzes it, and inspects it.

It smells like an ora-framed leather wolf mask.

You analyze your leather wolf mask and sense that there is no recorded information on that item. It may or may not be able to be worked on by a merchant alterer.

You get no sense of whether or not the mask may be further lightened.

You carefully inspect your leather wolf mask.

You determine that you could wear the mask anywhere on your body. The mask appears to serve some purpose.

Rovvigen softly says, "You may wear it but it is only accessible per 24 hours."

Waq says, "I had two glasses of rum tonight and got drunk 3 times."

Rovvigen softly says, "Wear it."

Darcena nods at Rovvigen.

Darcena sets the leather wolf mask carefully onto her face. It molds to her features like a second skin.

Waq says, "Hardly seems right."

Speaking to Rovvigen, Darcena says, "It fits."

Rendena softly says, "Aye."

Rendena softly says, "It does."

Darcena gives the mask back to Rovvigen.

Darcena muses, "That was interesting."

Darcena sincerely says, "Thank you Rovvi and Mikalmas."

Rovvigen softly says, smiling, "Thank you."

Mikalmas says, "Happy to serve as the messengers of the divine."

Darcena nods absently at Rovvigen.

Mikalmas nods to you.

Mikalmas says, "Prophecy has spoken. History will prove us right."

Mikalmas grins.

Darcena chuckles at Mikalmas.

Kelyse exclaims, "Have a great night, everyone!"

Kelyse waves.
