The link to the wiktionary.com definition of 'fuller' is inaccurate. While it may be true that it will allow more blood to flow were the sword imbedded into someone's chest, that is not the purpose of it, especially considering that a longsword is primarily a slashing weapon. Instead, it's purpose is to reduce weight by removing metal from the center of the sword. Due to the I-beam type structure, the strength of the sword is not affected much by the existance of the groove. While I have the ability to change the wiktionary entry, I'm not in the habit of changing another's definition, yet. -BELATHUS 18:56, 14 January 2006 (CST)

I changed the wiktionary definition for fuller. Heh. -Belathus 05:07, 16 January 2006 (CST)

The explanation I was given (by a supposed sword expert, but we know how thin those are in the ground in our century) was that the groove breaks the smooth plane of the flat of the blade, therefore reducing the resistance when you pull the sword out of something/someone you have thrust it into (resistance caused by suction and friction). And also the issue with reducing the weight without reducing the size of the blade. GREYCROISSANT 13:07, 1 September 2008 (EDT)
