A shrickhen screams furiously and points at you!
A wave of formless black ripples moves outward from a shrickhen.
You are buffeted by the formless black waves, and knocked to the ground.
You are pinned in place, unable to move.
... 40 points of damage!
Head decompresses and blood erupts from all orifices!

Above is the physical evidence. I added it to the Shrickhen page.

Inputs:
level 76 shrickhen (unless, of course, it spawned higher)
Level 79 paladin
Training per level (2x PF, 2x Shield Use, 1.5x CM, 1x Dodge, 1x Perception)
unencumbered
unwounded
SMR(2.0) spells up (1606, 1611)
Vigor running with 24 CON bonus (assuming roughly 4:1 CON Bonus to Crit Padding).

No previous casts of 435 from a shrickhen have resulted in any wounds higher than rank 3.

I think the only reason it was a rank 8 vs a rank 9 was because of the CON bonus providing pseudo crit padding.

Catastrophic Failure is something GMs have talked about with reference to what was the SMR, in particular, the high rate of this occurrence vs the Rift Crawler unburrow maneuver. Unfortunately, any posts about it have fallen off the officials long ago.

If you want confirmation from a GM, I'll try to get one from Estlid. Sound good?
