Carnelian is a brownish-red mineral commonly used as a semiprecious stone. Similar to carnelian is sard, which is generally harder and darker; the difference is not rigidly defined, and the two names are often used interchangeably.

a cabochon torchlight carnelian

Description:   Shimmering with sullen reds and strident oranges that lend the stone its name, the torchlight carnelian is a smooth cabochon with a velveteen surface. Striking bands of gold streak across its surface, their sharp metallic sheen contrasting with the natural luster of the gem.
