Cores are likely a reference to real-world core samples of naturally-occurring substances. In Elanthia, cores are a naturally occuring gemstones that are cylindrical or spindle in shape.

blue-green glacial core

Description:   Richly imbued with the hues of ancient ice at a glacier's heart, the core wavers between a green so deep as to be almost black and a rich, oceanic blue. Both tones converge within the heart of the gem, which burns with a frigid light. Shaped like a spindle, the gem's crystalline structure fades toward silver at its extremes.
