Dateline: Day 13th of Charlatos, 5104: Wehnimer's Landing |
It was the first good night's rest I had planned to get since the Spitfire had arrived. Just as I had blown out the candle that had illuminated my room and plopped down in bed, a sharp knocking came from my door. I had hoped by rolling over I could drown out the sound and welcome the sweetness of sleep. I was wrong. |
Grumbling all the while, I approached my door and pulled it open a crack when I was nearly sent tumbling back onto the floor! Into my house charged a small hooded figure soaked from the rain. My instincts were to reach for a dagger, but my robe had none. By second instinct, I threw my hands up over my face and squealed like a school girl. Nothing happened. |
I peeked through my quivering arms to see the figure had removed his cloak and even hung it up on the rack. It came with great relief to see an old friend standing before me, hand outstretched to help me up. When I asked why he had caused such a ruckus and scared me half to death he exclaimed, "The Gillywack is coming! The Gillywack is coming!" |
Well, you see, my old friend, a colleague from Waterford took it upon himself to deliver his urgent message in person. It seemed that the gnome airship, the Dhu Gillywack had docked briefly in the city of Waterford and when he had inquired as to its schedule this year, he learned it would be approaching Wehnimer's Landing near the end of Ivastaen. |
"That's two months away!" I shouted. His eyes grew wide and his chin touched his chest. He ran over to a small calendar hung up on my wall and cursed under his breath. With a polite bow and a small chuckle, he snatched his cloak from the rack and scurried back out closing the door behind him. |
As I lay back down and fit comfortably into my bed I mentally crossed off one name on my Thrakmas Gift list. A calendar he would receive, perhaps even two. I chuckled to myself before I drifted off into a perfect long-awaited night's rest. |
A sharp knocking came from my door. |

DARVA'S FASHION SHOW IS A GO! |
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |
Dateline: Day 21 of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven |
The lovely Darva has announced the dates for her "Bluefinch in Frost" at last! The opening day will be Volnes, 29 Charlatos 5104, and all merchandise will be on display through the next Restday, 4 Oleastra 5104. |
Despite the recent assault by V'tullian Berserker Zerroth's army on the port city of Solhaven, Darva still plans to hold the winter fashion show within its walls. However, should the cleanup effort's attempts to remove piles of soot and charred bones amidst blood-stained streets cause any problems for the show, a back up location has been secured in the less-urbane town of Wehnimer's Landing to the north. |
Those individuals who submitted various pattern designs to Darva in previous months should attend the fashion show to hear which twelve of the designers had their patterns accepted. The exact schedule for the show and other special events, including raffles and auctions, will be announced at a later date. |

It seems that the Elves can't stop talking about culture these days. The news of cultural pageants in Icemule and Kharam-Dzu are causing reactions that range from derisive twitters to outright scorn. |
According to an elven aristocrat in Ta'Illistim, the mere mention of the Icemule Halfling and Giantman cultural pageant or the Dwarven one planned in Kharam-Dzu is enough to start gales of laughter in his social circle. "Culture? What kind of culture can a bunch of furry tart-gobbling pranksters claim? And don't get me started on the Giantmen!" |
When asked for her reaction, Jimbla Dabbings, Icemule City Councilmember, positively beamed with pride. "That news of our pageant has spread all the way to Ta'Illistim thrills us," she said. "So what if we haven't been around for a million years like the Elves? We're proud of being Halflings and we're proud of our culture. We welcome Elves, Humans, Erithians, and even the Dhe'nar to come to our pageant and see just how exciting Halfling culture can be. And while they're at it, they should stop by the Silvermule. Best gambling north of Glatoph!" |
Elves in the other great Elven cities were no less scornful. One of the militia captains in Ta'Vaalor was heard to comment that the Kharam-Dzu pageant was likely to consist of one "grimy tent that smells of beer." |
When asked for comment, the deputy of Kharam-Dzu was heard to mutter something about "stupid Elves who wouldn't know a good ale if it came up and bit them in the..." |

In an unsurprising decision, a request by the National Assembly of Gnomes (NAG) to hold a cultural pageant within the limits of Wehnimer's Landing was turned down by the Mayor's office. |
"It's an absolute outrage," declared Ipsington Blanderstroke, president of NAG. "We pay taxes just like everyone else. We have every right to hold a cultural pageant if we want to! It's simply anti-Gnome prejudice that caused this decision." |
When pressed for the comment, a clerk in the Mayor's office denied the charge of anti-Gnomism. "Look, we get requests for things like this all the time. If we let the Gnomes hold a pageant, what next? Kobold Appreciation Day?" |
President Ipsington vowed to continue the search for a host town. "There're lots of towns that would love our pageant," he sniffed. "They'll be sorry." |

AN ERITHIAN PONDERS THE IDEA OF PAGEANTS |
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~ |
Dateline: Day 23 of Charlatos, 5104: none |
As a member of the Erithian race, I find myself intrigued by the sudden interest in culture among the other races. |
What is the purpose of these culture pageants? To celebrate one own's history, art, and way of life? In all actions, one is the continuation of the line started by our great, great, great, great grandparents. In such a way, one celebrates one's culture and history in every waking moment. |
Surely, if anything is worth celebrating, it is the natural culture of plants and the natural forces of wind, rain, and the endless miracle of growth? From the descriptions of the upcoming pageants, these will be riotous revelries, filled with loud singing, dancing, and the over-consumption of strong spirits. A better way to celebrate would be quiet reflection upon one's place in the universe and contemplation upon the harmonious relationship between oneself and the natural world. |
But, nevertheless, the urge to celebrate one's culture with song, dance, and performance seems strong among these races. I will continue to watch the developments with interest. Indeed, there may be something to be learned here. It might even be worth the experiment to mount our own, more comtemplative, pageant. One that would demonstrate the proper dignity of a truly cultured race. |

The previous edition of the Elanthian Journal, numbered fifteen, included a mistake printed in the "Defense Rallies In Solhaven" article. |
In the article, the second-in-command of the Ice Mule militia, the Northern Fury, was incorrectly named. In times that Valicar is not present to lead the militia, Zosopage stands in his place. Further inquiries regarding the militia and its support of Solhaven's defense should be directed toward them. |

An apology is extended to the Northern Fury and to Zosopage for this oversight. |
