As of the release of GemStone IV, the critical of an attack has become a lot more random than before. Where the critical was always the raw damage divided by the critical divisor before, it is now possible for the actual critical done to vary above or below that number. This is called critical randomization. The critical rank determined can be anywhere from 1 to 9 levels, and if the critical is calculated to be a specific value through the raw damage against the armor, the actual rank of the critical can vary by up to 2 ranks. For example, a level 4 critical could be anywhere from a level 2 critical to a level 6 critical.

Level 8 and level 9 criticals can vary anywhere from level 5 and level 9, as criticals of this level are always treated as if they were level 7 criticals.
