Subject: Re: So, another question (1020)

Is there anyway to get some clarification from a NIR if instruments do help so I can use it as justification to update the wiki if so?

Past that, is there any way to know the rest of the factors involved in success, even if not in magnitude or even order? The factors for Familiar Gate are well known, as are the contributing elements to 740, which are the most comparable spells as spirit fog doesn't exactly fail.

Factors for success: Bard spellsong ranks (largest factor), having an anchor set in the same realm, instrument skill while playing that particular instrument (with one-handed instruments counting as half the bonus as two-handed instruments), Mental and Elemental Mana Control ranks, and Discipline stat bonus.

There's a penalty for injuries and a minimum 5% chance of failure.

I will say anchoring really helps with success, more so than bothering to play an instrument in my experience.

Being an Adept at a two-handed instruments provides twice the bonus of the anchor being set.

Exact formula: Bard spellsong ranks * 2 + 10 if anchored in the same realm + 1-20 for instrument playing skill (if one-handed, half the bonus) + seed 1 summation of (EMC + MMC) + DIS bonus (min 0) + d100. Penalties for not being able to think clearly (typically head wound, which range from -90 to -10). If >= 100, success.
