Title: A Weapon of Memory--Silver Roses

Author: Opalina Jalcon

From the journals of Opalina Jalcon- 2001

Steel has a memory.

Not of battles, perhaps. Not truly. But of the hands that shape it, the fire that tempers it, and the soul that chooses to carry it.

I stood before the smith longer than necessary, fingers tracing the empty air where the blade would soon rest. Most warriors spoke first of balance, edge, or weight. Those things mattered, certainly, but they were not what made a weapon worth carrying.

"What would you like etched upon it?" came the question.

I smiled before I answered.

"Silver roses."

The words felt strange aloud. Roses were delicate things, too soft for steel by most reckonings. Yet they endured winters that felled hardier blooms. Their beauty was never separate from their thorns.

Perhaps that was why they belonged on my blade.

"And the hilt?"

"A leaping dolphin, burned into the leather."

The craftsman blinked, surprised by the pairing.

I couldn't blame him.

A dolphin beside roses. Sea beside garden. Freedom beside elegance.

It made perfect sense to me.

Water had always called to me more than stone ever could. Rivers refused to remain where they were placed. Oceans embraced storms without fear. Dolphins danced through impossible currents with laughter in every leap. They survived not by hardness, but by grace.

There was strength in that.

There always had been.

Others saw swords as promises of violence.

Mine was something different.

It was a reminder.

The silver roses would speak of compassion that never surrendered. The dolphin would remind me to move—not simply with speed, but with joy, with cleverness, with purpose. A blade could end a life, yes, but it could just as easily defend one.

When the sword was finally placed in my hands, the blued vultite caught the light like twilight reflected upon a still lake. Silver roses climbed its length in delicate acid-etched vines, while beneath my fingers the leather hilt bore the unmistakable form of a dolphin forever caught in mid-leap.

Beautiful.

Dangerous.

Hopeful.

I wrapped my hand around the grip and felt, for just a heartbeat, as though the sword had been waiting for me as long as I had been searching for it.

There would be blood upon this steel one day. There always was.

But before any of that, before the monsters and the darkness and the stories yet unwritten, there were only silver roses...

...and the promise that even a weapon could carry beauty into the world.
