March 19th: Library Visit

The small cedar chest is lined with soft red velvet.  Extra pieces of cedar are placed at strategic locations across the inside to assist in the preservation of the chest's contents, and a small label is affixed to the exterior.

In the cedar chest you see a tattered leather book cover, a sheaf of preserved papers, a piece of aged parchment, a leather ledger and a quill-stamped scroll.

The pages within have crumbled, leaving only a tattered leather book cover.  Remnants of gold foil can be seen within the stamped titling on the spine.

Attempts at preservation have kept the papers intact, but the contents appear to have been lost to the ravages of time as the ink has faded almost completely.  The only legible words are the title, which appears to have been traced over multiple times in long-lasting inks.

The small leather ledger is old but well-preserved; it is stamped with gold lettering reading, "Kivaera Astielern, Accounts of the First Couturier."  A quick glance through the interior shows numerous rows and columns of numbers and nothing else.

March 24th: First Couturier Storeroom Visit

[The First Couturier's Storage]

Lily-shaped sconces are obscured by ceiling-high stacks of stamped crates, the overflowing containers filled with various paraphernalia.  A lone leather-backed chair sits buried beside pewter-riveted trunks, the clutter-filled containers covered by lengths of silk draped across a grouping of mannequins nestled against the back wall.   Room-length shelves occupy the available space along the walls, leaving enough space for a series of sealed chests to serve as makeshift tables.

A light wash of silver lacquer covers the individual crates, the interior lined by panels of pavonated leather.  The sides are stamped in a stylized peacock motif, their plumage painted in vibrant jewel tones that splash down into a curtain of colorful speckles.

Ornate silhouettes of beleria are inked across the edges, the flora highlighted by petals of silver foil.

The embroidery across the brocade is uneven and asymmetric, leaving stray stitches across the edging.  A small tag attached to the side reads, "For your stitching lessons. - C"

In the silk brocade you see a ribbon-looped electrum ring.

The simple ring is a hammered strip of electrum, devoid of ornamentation save for a line of calligraphy etched into the inner surface.

A faint trail of scuff marks mars the gentian leather framework of each rectangular trunk, the pewter rivets reinforcing the edges providing space of bits of brittle cobwebs.  Sticking out from the containers are bundles of fabric, their surfaces veiled in a thin layer of dust.

In the pewter-riveted trunk you see a scrap of brittle ecru paper, a pressed naefira petal and a pressed beleria petal.

A repeating pattern of pavonated peacocks covers the visible surface of the rug, the rest loosely bound by a length of knotted rope.

The oddly shaped ball of fluff and discarded threads resembles a capybara.  Or perhaps a peahen.

Curved lilies frame the circular lid of the cloisonne box, the flowers wrapped by leaves of spring green enamel.  A lace-like veil of brittle cobwebs covers the container from top to bottom, clinging tightly to the contours.

In the ivory cloisonne box you see a tiny piece of taessaet, an ink-stained notecard, a suede-tied lapis leather journal and a palm-sized piece of elesine.

The thimble-sized piece of taessaet appears intact, save for an upper corner that has been neatly trimmed with a sharp object.

You gingerly reach out but quickly withdraw your hand, realizing that you might break the fragile journal.

Embossed across the front flap of the journal is a single stargazer lily flourishing beneath a crescent moon.

The scrap of gilt-sheened elesine has been asymmetrically cut at the upper corner.  A small tag has been sewn across the back, the curled edges bound by cobalt-colored threads.

Triaxial pattern decreased by      ,         -al fibers of electrum have been      , resulting in successful creation.
Sample appears to be without fault, despite the shorter duration in preparation versus previous attempts.

Sketch-filled suede folios are stacked across each shelf, the remaining spaces jammed with ribbon-tied samples of fabric and dried vials of vibrant dye.  A compact mirror rests upon the bottom shelf, its surface cracked and layered in brittle cobwebs.

On the wooden shelf you see a well-worn sheet of vellum and a curved pale stone mortar.

A broken seal of greyish blue wax has been impressed with the image of a crossed pair of scissors and a needle.  The calligraphic missive is pristine despite its age, as though it has not passed through the postal channels.

A heavy brass lock is affixed to each of the hard leather chests, the device shaped like a duo of tall-feathered peahens.  The flat-topped surfaces are branded with a monogrammed motif of florals and vines, the stylized letter "C" framed within the oval.

The heady scent of bergamot tea surrounds the canister, the dried remnants of leaves clinging to the dusty thuja leaf-painted lid.

The tiny square of aqilorn has been tinted a brilliant shade of bluish green, the iridescent material no larger than an acorn in size.  A minute tag has been attached with a knot of thread, the name "Ryvvuel" written across the surface.

April 7th: Journal Pages

Along the bottom, matching crimson ink reads "Page 1 of 7."  Between these vivid markings are several lines of easy-to-read, elegant script in black ink.

In the Common language, it reads:
...cannot get a good answer as to why the spiders are "tassaet" and not "taessaet," but I hypothesize it was a spelling mistake that went unnoticed.  Nalfein, like Illistimi however, bristle when I bring it up.  I shall leave that to the linguists, I suppose.  While in Ta'Nalfein, I was surprised to see how many types of tassaet spiders there are.  Most appear to enjoy their tiny lives amidst the taerethil undisturbed by the taessaet-weavers, but I have noted that specific types get greater scrutiny... it may be that it is the tassaet's coloration and the type of taerethil?  The one time I was allowed to witness this, they focused on tassaets near a ruffled ebon rose only.  However, this could just be coincidence.

Today, there was a bit of a kerfuffle in the Taessaet Quarter.  Apparently, their alchemists are running short of a specially treated glimaerstone they use in the nielira elixir for rosesilk.  They're experimenting today with garden variety glimaerstones and different tree saps.  My mentor is beside herself with the results -- they are not good.

...it has been a lovely several weeks in Ta'Ashrim.  I saw the looms they make elesine on, and they are a marvel.  Between elesine and taessaet, I feel the elves will set the fabric standards for centuries to come, but it concerns me how secretive both processes truly are.  I'm keeping these notes in utmost secrecy in the hopes when I return to Ta'Illistim, we can at least archive processes against the trials and tribulations of time.

My dissertations on past Mirrors are going slowly because there is so much to learn here I keep putting it aside for more interesting, modern activities.  However, my Ta'Nalfein studies are coming to a close soon, so I shall have to turn back to finishing my historical studies.  I must return to Ta'Illistim, but I do hope to learn more about this nielira elixir first.  Someone yesterday was grousing that a human may have helped modify the formula successfully to handle the absence of whatever special glimaerstones they were using.  I find that a bit hard to believe; the Elven Empire has the best alchemists Elanthia can offer.

...resaeun was the key... it was a human.  Fascinating... I hope the nielira population can support this.  Everyone is taessaet-mad around here.  It is a lovely fabric.  Impractical for daily use, but it truly elevates formal affairs.  As apprentices, we are competing in a design contest.  I petitioned to make and use rosesilk.  I was granted a bolt of cloth to create my designs in, but it was deemed inappropriate for an Illistimi apprentice to be allowed to actually create their own from start to finish.  Ah well, my notes shall suffice until I get home and can try my hand at it.  I think I have sketched out the special looms well enough to have one made.

...I have managed to watch every stage of production of rosesilk now.  It is quite intricate.  Unlike elesine, where the main intricacy comes from the loom to create the triaxial weave, rosesilk relies on several unique components and a special loom!  The Nalfein reputation for intricacy in all things is no doubt well-earned even in fashion.  I wonder if I can sneak out some roses and spiders...

In the Common language, it reads:
...unable to obtain ingredients, ah well.  I shall just have to return to Ta'Nalfein frequently.  I was gifted several bolts of taessaet from my professor, however, as a congratulations for winning the student competition with my corset design.  Hiding bladed fans in the boning was genius, if I do say so myself.
