Each material has a weight modifier associated with it to account for the differences in strength and density of the various magical metals within the world of Elanthia. The formula is truncated after multiplying an item's base weight by the material's weight modifier. For example, an item weighing 4 pounds, such as a katar, that is made of imflass (a 70% modifier, or 0.7) would weigh 2.8 pounds. Truncating this, you end up with an object weighing a mere 2 pounds.
