Rune books are special tomes used by sorcerers to record a runic representation of the patterns of magical flows in various rooms. These patterns are then copied from the book to be used in the spell Planar Shifting (740). Rune books have ten pages, each page capable of holding twenty individual runes.

Proper Usage

A rune book can only have new runes added to it if the sorcerer attempting to add the runes is bonded to the book. A sorcerer can bond to a book by taking it to the summoning chamber of a local Sorcerer Guild and, while holding it in his or her hand, RUBing the crystal. A sorcerer can only be bonded to one book at a time, and only one sorcerer can be bonded to a single book at a time. Should a sorcerer unbond from the book to bond with another, the now unbonded book becomes permanently unbondable in the future.

While unbonded rune books cannot have runes added to them, they can still be used. A book which has been locked by being unbonded can be used by anyone to draw runes from. In addition, a bonded book can be used by someone other than the bonded sorcerer, if the sorcerer wishes to lend it out for use. Even then though, only the bonded sorcerer can add new runes to the book.

To add a rune to a book, the sorcerer must be holding it in his or her hand when attempting to use SENSE PATTERN in the room. Additionally, when attempting to copy the runes from the book, the sorcerer must be holding it as well as a chalk when attempting to DRAW PATTERN <#>.

Runebook Verbs

  • SENSE PATTERN

Adds the runic pattern for the current room, if one exists, to the runebook if an open slot is available.

  • DRAW PATTERN <# of pattern>

Allows a sorcerer to copy the pattern of choice and incorporate it into the summoning circle.

  • TURN/FLIP BOOK

Turn allows one to move forward one page in the book, while flip allows one to move back one page.

  • TAP/POKE BOOK

Runebooks allow selection of a rune for deletion. This is accomplished by TAPing and POKEing the book. TAP allows the user to select the rune beneath the currently selected slot, while POKE allows the user to select the rune above.

  • RUB BOOK

If a sorcerer RUBs his or her book, he or she will be informed that they may delete the rune that is currently selected by RUBing it again. RUBing it a second time will delete the rune.

  • WHISPER BOOK SHOW PATTERN <# of pattern>

This allows a sorcerer to recieve a glimpse of the room description of the selected room. It can be used to verify that it is infact the desired destination.
