The link to the wiktionary.com definition of 'fuller' is inaccurate. While it may be true that it will allow more blood to flow were the sword imbedded into someone's chest, that is not the purpose of it, especially considering that a longsword is primarily a slashing weapon. Instead, it's purpose is to reduce weight by removing metal from the center of the sword. Due to the I-beam type structure, the strength of the sword is not affected much by the existance of the groove.
