Quests are relatively short events, potentially with a timed element, that have some level of automation as part of their progression. They range from being in place temporarily, such as those quests supporting an ongoing festival or pay event, to being available permanently in game so long as certain criteria are met. Some quests utilize the QUEST verb while others are tracked by other methods.
While similar to storylines in that both unfold based on player actions, the key difference between a storyline and a quest is automation. Storylines, while often GM-led, are not automated and often last much longer than a single quest. Storylines may also utilize quests as a means to advance certain goals or to evaluate the choices characters make either in support of or against a given objective.
Permanent quests are those that are always available as long as their prerequisites are met. Some permanent quests can only be completed once, such as Shadow's Descent, while others are repeatable after a cooldown. Pay quests, including those accessed via the Quest Nexus, are a type of permanent quest that requires some type of quest entry token from the SimuCoin store to participate. Other permanent quests are more mission-like in their structure with set objectives.
Temporary quests are those that can only be accessed for a temporary duration. They include quests associated with free festivals, pay events, or ongoing storylines. For example, the Newly Unliving Registry guidebook quest is only available while Ebon Gate is open.
