The Braided Loaf: Dwarven Beard Bread
This culinary delight is so named due to its exterior and fortunately has nothing to do with the ingredients (barring the inadvertent, errant shedding). In some dwarven communities, the beard bread tradition is a regular occurrence, in others it is virtually non-existent, and in still others, it may be done only on special occasions.
Beard breads are intricately braided breads done in the image of favorite ways to braid one's beard. Some bakers may use it as an opportunity to laud someone's impressive beard or to mock someone else's lackluster display -- in short, beard breads can become barbed and political. Fortunately, however, most dwarves take them in stride, even when they are the subject of the yeasty edible.
It is also simply an opportunity to showcase various cultural braiding styles in a delicious format. One can order a custom beard bread for a special occasion, or the baker may just display their creations in a shop window for all to see. The breads are always edible and usually quite delicious, and any bread type may be used.
While the primary artistry is in the braiding of the dough, herbs, seeds, vegetables, and other decor also frequently adorn the loaf, serving as edible beard clips and beads, for example. As a fun-loving jab at their beardless neighbors, a plain loaf of bread is sometimes called "elven beard bread."
