THURFEL REGAINS THE STAFF OF AMASALEN
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 14 of Phoenatos, 5102: Icemule Trace

On Leyan, the 7th day of Phoenatos, it was learned that the Staff of Amasalen had been wrested from Xeldria by the Navigators. This being the case, Thurfel had an interest in finding out exactly who the Navigators are and what is of interest to them. He was told about the gold transport rings, and how the Navigators always eventually reclaim them. So the firemage reasoned that the best way to get to negotiate with a Navigator in hopes of regaining the staff was to "summon" one or more of them with the "bait" of something that should intrigue them.

Subsequently Thurfel and his servant Witlass Grawg collected a total of fifty gold transport rings from folks in IceMule willing to help in the venture. Thurfel's plan was to reforge the fifty smaller rings into one extremely large ring, sure to evoke the Navigators' attention.

On Restday, the 11th day of Phoenatos, Thurfel did indeed perform such a summoning ceremony upon his island. The ring he had created was indeed massive and charged with a great amount of magical energy. And the Navigators did indeed come to claim it... and Thurfel with it, the firemage vanishing before the eyes of gaping onlookers.

Meanwhile, two of the Nine took advantage of the firemage's obvious inability to confront them at that moment by coming freely upon the island. Cheritz and Gavrail, the two liches who so appeared, called forth undead from the sands, which attacked in droves. They spoke constantly of the "betrayer", as they call Thurfel, and his "ruses". Yet understandably their words held little weight with those in town who have experienced the heavy killing and maiming hands of these liches. Not to mention those unwillingly possessed and forced at times to physically and verbally do the will of these undead creatures.

Thurfel apparently did manage to negotiate with the Navigators, as he returned in a flicker of light to the island, staff very much in hand. The session with the transport mages seemed to have drained him magically, however, and he was unable to hold himself perfectly stable into the current plane. However, the firemage now believes the power of the liches can be ended at last, and he seeks to garner the last four orbs to place on the altar and free the remaining possessed before inserting the staff itself in position on that same altar.

As a side-note to the proceedings, just previous to the summoning ceremony, Vonka began to feel great pain from the essence within her. As Thurfel traced the runes in the sand to raise the massive gold ring, the pain increased. It finally subsided as the firemage drew the last rune. Vonka herself said was like "something being forcibly pulled" from inside her. She is now "unpossessed", though details remain sketchy. However, this was a most welcome and unexpected side benefit from the whole summoning procedure.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 10 of Phoenatos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

The other morning I woke to find the Mayor's head decorating the north gate of our fair city. Since then the thugs who have styled themselves "The Guard" have taken over Wehnimer's Landing and are arresting willy-nilly, anyone they do not like. Now it appears that a well-known local bathhouse, Cholgar's, has been arbitrarily destroyed.

And I have heard strange talk of excluding all but the tall and fair from entrance into this once diverse and democratic town. I want to know what is happening here or rather how our once sensible populace can have allowed this to happen.

Also as a Bard it is sometimes my pleasure to research historical topics for song and poetry. Recently in the course of researching the life and history of the Lord Voln for a song I performed at the House Aspis Bardfest, I uncovered some disturbing implications concerning his origins.

The literature and references on Lord Voln are scanty. The small amount of material that I was able to find implies that Voln's birth may have in some unknowable way upset the Balance, potentially weakening this world's defenses against the dark and hungry forces of Unlife. The frightening implication is that even though his birth was indeed the result of Lorminstra holding Koar to his promise to give her a paladin, a human weapon, to aid in her fight against the undead. Koar created in Voln a weapon of unknowable potential. Yes he is undoubtedly a weapon dedicated to the light, but as we all know by now, there is no weapon that cannot be turned on its owner.

I am and will continue to be a dedicated follower of Voln and a true servant of Great Lorminstra, however I am deeply troubled by my findings and in light of our recent troubles in the Landing I have taken the courage to write this letter. I can only hope that it will be received in the spirit in which it was written.

By my hand, Koin Faesdatter (Bard)

TEMPLE OF ICEMULE CLOSED AFTER PARTIAL COLLAPSE
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 7 of Phoenatos, 5102: Icemule Trace

On Tilamaires, day 6 of the month Phoenatos, the Temple of IceMule underwent a partial collapse and has been closed to the public until further notice. A sign on the door reads: Closed until further notice! Beware falling ice!

Warnings of impending structural failure were initially heralded by sounds of cracking and rumbling in the ice in the hallway west of the Main Chapel, where construction had been ongoing on the new wing. Within the span of perhaps a quarter hour, that hallway collapsed inward, an avalanche of ice blocking the exit. (All the workers managed to get out fast.) Several people were trapped inside, but were rescued by Jestin and this writer via fogging into the collapsed area and then fogging the entrapped out.

The complete structure of the building of ice was compromised by this occurrence, however. Rumbles went through the entire temple, and the pillars in the Main Chapel showed serious fracturing. At this point Sniffberry arrived and, noting the cracks in the pillars, decided the safest alternative would be to close the temple until it can be determined structurally sound and properly repaired, if repair is possible.

Accordingly, Sniffberry sealed off with blocks of ice both the upward and downward passages of the temple from the Main Chapel. Those of us, who had been witnesses to the sad event, went out on the ramp to the temple. All except Tierus, who had foolishly insisted on trying to save the altar of Mularos in the Hall of the Wounded Heart and was trapped within the temple. He steadfastly refused rescue via fogging, insisting Eryael would want him to stay and die protecting the altar.

Once everyone else was safely outside, Sniffberry voiced concerns about the Hall of Rebirth and those who might wind up trapped inside upon being returned by Lorminstra from Purgatory. He therefore erected a temporary altar outside the temple and Jestin, through the intercedence of Eonak to Lorminstra, saw it properly blessed. It seemed to be working properly as the resting place for those returned from Purgatory as several appeared upon the altar during the time we were all standing on the ramp discussing the situation.

Sniffberry noted that it would take funding to repair the temple structure, if indeed it is repairable, as well as initial funding to hire experts to determine the overall structural soundness of the building. It was recommended to him he seek out a good dwarf construction crew for that first task of determining the soundness of the structure as a whole. He mentioned in turn he would likely have to hold a raffle or auction in town to raise the needed funds.

YOUR TOWN NEEDS YOU!
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 1 of Phoenatos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

Since its founding, Wehnimer's Landing has seen its fair share of ordeal, from invaders from beyond the veil, to foreign assaults, to being burned to the ground, twice! Through every trying period the town has endured, though the situations themselves have been varied, the results have been consistent: Wehnimer's Landing perseveres.

The town finds itself in the grip of a series of mysterious murders including the editor of this journal, a respected bank teller, the renowned grocer and even the mayor himself. As a result, many townspeople question not only the safety of themselves and their loved ones, but of the stability of the local government.

Those in the municipal offices at Moot Hall wish to remind everyone that not only is there indeed still a town government, but it is working for you to ensure the town is safe for those who find comfort within its walls. The recently assigned guards and constabulary are working tirelessly to solve the mysteries surrounding these murders. The acting interim mayor is doing his very best to ensure that a new mayor is elected quickly and without complication. The town council remains steadfast in seeing that daily operation goes largely uninterrupted.

The largest part of any town, of course, is its citizens, and as such, it is your duty to also see the town through this recent trial. Report suspicious activity to local officials. Take those little extra steps to ensure the safety of you and your family. Above all else, do not lose faith in the town that has survived much worse and has come out the better for it.

A NOTICE TO THE ORDER OF VOLN
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 1 of Phoenatos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

Hail brothers and sisters of the Order of Voln,

The Guards are working in our favor.

Repeatedly have I witnessed a human with a well-balanced steel sabre invoke fear into the merchants of Wehnimer's Landing for silver. This money is being paid to this human, this fiend with hazel eyes and black skin for "protection". He promises protection, true - from himself and his cronies. Only a man with no soul would threaten the lives of these honest citizens.

I weary of accusations against the guards for misdoings. Guards Direw, Fradox and Vlaxion are indeed working to help keep the landing safe and the merchants in business.

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to help the guards in their service. Be on the lookout for the man I described and be cautious of his advice! His words are poison and his mission unholy.

A MEETING WITH LORD BORARUS
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 1 of Phoenatos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

More than a month has passed since I spoke with Lord Borarus on the 9th of Lumnea. When last we met he ripped out my eyes and drooled over them for only a minute before implanting then into his own decaying skull. Our meeting was brief, and during our encounter I swore my healing hand to his cause.

I encountered him in Potter's Field. Only few others were present, curious as to why a particularly wretched zombie would not attack - only watch on in miserable silence. Eventually the creature spoke, requesting the aid of a human. My aid was summoned, but not for the usual medicinal skills I possess. This time an undead being requested my curing power. The zombie told me that it needed my eyes to begin recovery. I knelt and the zombie bit off my head at the neck.

I awoke to find myself without sight. After casting my organ repair spell I watched as the creature known as Borarus stuck my eyes into his sockets. He said his vision had never been better. The being promised me great power and thanked me for my aid. Borarus seemed to hesitate, looking unsure of himself as he pondered how he would heal the rest of his body. It was then that I suggested that Borarus turn to the rejuvenating power of troll's blood. After I explained in detail how the blood of troll's has a restorative healing power, he beseeched those gathered to return with various body parts of trolls for his mending.

Soon after his quest was given, the zombie was attacked from the shadows by a member of the Order of Voln, who thought the best way to free the suffering of Borarus was to slay him.

RESPONSE TO SMALL TOWN LETTER
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 31 of Koaratos, 5102: River's Rest

I would like to take a minute of your time and respond to the recent letter in the Elanthian Journal regarding small towns. Now being a resident of a small town, River's Rest, and quite proud of that fact let me shed a little light. We are a small tight knit community with certain customs and traditions. We try to teach all who come to visit or stay. We usually offer all the services free of charge that normally in the larger cities you would pay for. We will pick your boxes, spell you with magic, heal you, and even recruit cleric brethren to raise you. We might help equip you, guide you on hunts in our fair area, and buy you ale and share a tale or two. We just ask simple things be returned to us in kind.

Remember this, you are a guest of this town. We live here. We ask that you observe local customs and laws. We will ask nicely at first and even the second time, but do not think you can come into our house and rule. The customs of your lands or towns are not ours. If we travel we need to also extend that same courtesy to you and your town. Please, don't come to my town and demand things. I'm not your mother or father and I owe you nothing. If I do something it is with the kindness of my heart I do so. Do not come into my town and insult my friends and family. I'm very protective of them and would just as soon take your heart as to see harm befall them. Please try to remember to extend a little kindness and not be quick with the tongue. As my poor old mother would say,

I hope none have taken offense with what I have said. None was meant by it. I do hope you understand more about our small towns. If ever one of you travels to River's Rest, look up the Admiral. I'll gladly buy you an ale and spin a tale or two about our fair town. Which, by the way, has the best ale in the lands.

Sincerely, Admiral Runyun and his crew

DISPOSITION OF THE 7th LICH VESSEL
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 30 of Koaratos, 5102: Icemule Trace

On the 8th day of Koaratos, manifestations of a plague-like disease were noted in the town of Icemule Trace amongst children and animals. Several youngsters exhibited pale splotches on the skin as well as high fever, and the youngest succumbed easily to the malady. Animals too were affected, in particular the penguins that gather at the pool on Penguin Hill. Additionally, as this affliction further evidenced its symptoms, a heavy downpour covered the area, bringing with it an unhealthy black mist with an awful stench. Worms rose from the earth in various stages of rot and quickly died.

Panic was setting through the town when Thurfel appeared asking about what was happening. The deaths of the children and animals alarmed him, as he noted the magical power of a lich orb could do this type of poisoning. He suspected the seventh orb, therefore, had to be in a place where was polluting a common source. As it turned out, this common source was the pool on Penguin Hill, where Perigourd discovered an opalescent grey glass orb in the water.

Upon its discovery, the two female liches - Gavrail and Cheritz - appeared to claim the orb. Perigourd, however, handed the orb to Thurfel as both liches made magical attacks upon the firemage in unsuccessful attempts to wrest the orb from him. Thurfel opened a portal to the vault, and those with him on the hill entered through it to safety... or so was thought. However, Gavrail, by some means yet undetermined, managed to enter there. She made a final fruitless assault on Thurfel before she was banished from the area by the firemage's own magic.

Once the orb was placed on the altar, Tianni went through the painful process of separation from her lich essence and was fully freed of possession. But the liches, angered by Thurfel having gained another vessel, set undead in droves upon the town, killing many. The firemage came to the defense of Icemule once more and majorly damaged the lich Cheritz. With the more powerful Gavrail, however, he was able to only slightly damage her before she retreated into the night.

With the lich vessel out of contact with the water, the pollution of the pond should naturally clear itself, Thurfel stated from his experience with such magicks, though there might be some lingering after-effects. The main concern remains that Gavrail has found a way into the vault. If she breeches the barrier when Thurfel is not there to fend her off, the lich will be able to remove the orbs from the altar. The firemage, therefore, will be speaking with Telchor and the wizards' guild about the creation of a "guardian" for the vault, some form of fire elemental.

So the count now is seven of the nine orbs found, with Thurfel in possession of five of them and the liches in possession of two.

GUARDS A SUCCESS
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 28 of Koaratos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

As many of you know, the Mayor of Wehnimer's Landing recently authorized the hire of a cadre of guards to protect the innocent citizens of the town. While there is still a continuing need for these watchmen, their presence has resulted in numerous arrests for various petty crimes. Jail sentences and fines have more than doubled as a result of their persistence in tracking down miscreants.

Areas such as the small park, the east tower and town square central have been long known for the prevalence of pickpockets and occasional assaults. The guard force has cracked down here and elsewhere, providing eyewitness testimony for the constable and judge. When they summon a posse to drag off a lawbreaker, not only is that person punished by anyone who had some shady business on his mind is advised to look elsewhere.

At the same time, rumors have begun to float as to the honesty of the guard force. Locksmiths plying their trade have spoken of feeling a tug at their coin pouch when a guard was supposedly on duty in the east tower. A few citizens have reported being accused falsely of crimes they did not commit. Has our government been lead astray by a corrupt group of mercenaries or is this just a reaction from petty criminals who have suddenly found their life of crime rudely interrupted?

EDITOR'S DEATH CALLED TRAGIC
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 30 of Koaratos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

The Elanthian Times editorial and publishing staff issued a press release yesterday concerning the recent death of former Elanthian Journal editor Rharosch Dashovath. They called it a "tragic and senseless suicide" and revealed that they had been in negotiations with Mr. Dashovath to assist him with his debts.

Some sources have speculated that the Times was attempting to buy out his paper, despite Dashovath's resistance to the takeover. The Elanthian Times, when contacted, called this nonsense and stated that their intent was to help keep the young Journal afloat despite Dashovath's financial problems. "The Journal caters to an entirely different market than our publishing. We're in no way competitors and we believe that the increased literacy among Journal readers may actually boost our own sales," said one Times staff member who requested anonymity.

The Times press release also exhorted the local constable to "quickly get to the bottom of this incident" and offered a 100,000 silver reward for information concerning the death. They also called upon the newly hired guard force to heavily patrol the docks district, home to gambling halls, sailor's inns, various other forms of recreation and some say an organized crime ring.

We approached one of the guards on the streets of Wehnimer's Landing and asked her whether the editor's death may be linked to the criminal groups that led to the guards' hiring. "I heard it had something to do with those editors at the Times. They were getting upset at the success and wide circulation of the Journal and were losing paying subscribers. Though I've heard a few other rumors about thugs and such. Hard to say with everyone talking and no one saying anything," we were told.

HELGA'S REOPENS!
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: 29 of Koaratos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

Helga's famous tavern has reopened after the recent invasion of Wehnimer's Landing! Helga herself survived the Luukosian menace in good shape, although she did complain about the difficulties of getting fanatic blood off her best meat cleaver. She was willing to show off the cleaver that did indeed still have rust-colored stains in the handle.

The tavern is still being rebuilt, so watch out for the workmen inside. As usual, Helga keeps everyone in her tavern in line including the construction workers. In a not so usual turn of events, Helga has decided to offer free drinks! All the ale, mead, grog and wine you can drink, a crust of bread if you're hungry and even a simple glass of tea if you're not the drinking sort. Then again, why are you in Helga's if you just want honeyed tea?

Veterans of the bar may notice that Helga seems to be watering down the drinks. None have the kick that a true Helga's Tavern brew usually delivers and the woman will actually let you take the glass with you now! There's no such thing as a free lunch, or a free good ale in this case. While you're there, make sure to try the stew. It doesn't look like much but it's tasty all the same.

SNIFFBERRY'S DARK DEALINGS REVEALED
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 20 of Koaratos, 5102: Icemule Trace

For several years now, the pawnbroker Sniffberry Mettrengage has been suspected of dealings tinged with dishonesty and darkness: auctioning off implosion wands to unsuspecting young halflings, numerous sellings of the Solhaven Market Bridge, and stealing the pawnshop he currently owns from an innocent Dwarven Circle broker.

This day, the 20th of Koaratos, we discovered the true nature of Mettrengage's dealings. Suspicions recently rose anew with the arrival of a peculiar large crate in his pawnshop. It reeked of fish and other things less attractive to the nose.

A trio of Icemulers, including Sabitor Stratigo, Turinrond Coyoterre, and Tierus Morvaenus, forced Sniffberry to reveal the contents of his crate. Instead of some creature crafted of horror and fishy scents, an adorable little penguin chick wandered out of the crate. Explained Sniffberry, he had been attempting to train the penguin for use as a pet of Icemule Trace.

The members of the trio have named this penguin chick Puffle, but the people of Icemule are welcome to call it by any name they wish.

Welcome to Icemule, Puffle the Penguin Chick!
