Dateline: Day 5 of Eoantos, 5102: Solhaven

Mere days after the Sheruvian forces were driven from Solhaven, the resistance against the Dark Alliance mobilized their collective power to make a final, decisive assault upon their would-be conquerors. As the Prophet Ulstram rested, plans were laid to make an offensive move upon Draezir's encampment - rumors were that his search had proved extremely fruitful, and that he had narrowed down a small section in the Cairnfang where the piece of the sword might be found.

Realizing their forces were in a state of mild chaos from the unexpected victory of the resistance, the residents of Solhaven planned a daring attack upon Draezir's encampment. Working with the Prophet Ulstram once he regained his strength, the adventurers pierced the veil of illusion that previously shrouded his location from others. Fighting through the gates and the troops that were fortifying the base, they succeeded in hampering his forces severely.

At the same time, however, the spies of the Dark Alliance were taken to Lord Kendryth's battered encampment and told to destroy any remaining survivors from the previous conflict with Draezir's army. As one side fought, so did the other, and as both groups retreated from their accomplished missions, they came unwittingly upon the very area the Dark Alliance had narrowed their search down to. In the chaos of battle, however, any organized search effort had been abandoned in the interests of defense.

The adventurers stumbled upon a cave nearly at the same moment, and there they discovered the second piece of the Griffin Sword - its golden quillions. They are held safely, for now, but rumors persist to the true allegiances of the one who holds them.

Time will surely tell where their heart lies.

In the meantime, whispers of foul things afoot in the east reach me by missive, yet they are unclear and unspecific in their descriptions.

Dateline: Day 21 of Eoantos, 5102: Ta'Illistim

To Whom it May Concern: In the interests of informing the public of current events, I've begun taking notes upon the general happenings of the rather odd situations that are currently afoot in the Shining City of Ta'Illistim. My findings may be freely distributed to whoever has an interest in such matters.

I suppose it all truly began on the 6th of Eoantos for our people - while I did not directly witness it, I am no stranger to researching the obscure. Apparently, a relatively large force of undead and other various creatures were detected near the borders of ShadowGuard. Examining the situation, I personally found that it occurred at one of the worst times possible in a political sense - in the recent months a faction of nobles and other empowered individuals were pushing for a more disciplined and stronger force in arms for the Shining City. Quite inexplicable, really, they just seemed to pop up with these suggestions when things had been utterly calm on such fronts before.

Regardless, as it was our scryers who discovered this band of creatures, the military faction petitioned that the bolstered forces of Ta'Illistim meet this small threat as a test of their new policies and training. Political chest thumping, in its barest form. Not wanting to appear desperate, they sent a quarter of Ta'Illistim's total forces to meet the threat near ShadowGuard.

Unfortunately, they stood no chance, as it was an ambush by what is now known as the Dark Alliance. They were utterly destroyed, along with a small Vaalorian Keep that they had taken rest in the night before the battle. All of us in Ta'Illistim knew something had gone wrong, as the power of the necromancy wielded upon the battlefield was so strong it sent ripples through the essence that could be felt from quite a distance away. Our brothers in Ta'Vaalor were more aware of the situation - they had been watching from the beginning.

The militant faction that had been surging in popularity rightly plummeted that night, and I've barely heard mention of it among the nobility since. The Vaalorian Guard informed us that they would be taking care of the situation, and of course, would welcome the talents of our mages and other scholars for use in strategic planning. The remainder of Ta'Illistim's forces are either stationed in the city itself or have been used to bolster the ranks of our border guard should the Dark Alliance make a move toward us. Either way, they are stretched rather thin at the moment, and a tad red-faced to boot. To my knowledge, there have been some rather brief discussions with the Ardenai for reinforcements should the need for such arise.

However, I doubt any aid will be required - once the Vaalor mobilized their forces, they halted the Dark Alliance's movement completely. At the time of this writing, they are currently fighting the enemy about a week's ride south of of the city itself and neither force shows any sign of retreating. Good news, at the least, though there have been reports of raids and small battles on their northern borders by undead and other creatures. I've heard they began recruiting again to deal with this threat, but have not heard of any progress, publically announced or privately whispered.

Curiously, there are even more pieces to this puzzle, namely the reason why this Dark Alliance is even here in the first place. It appears they search for a remnant of a rather important religious artifact - The Griffin Sword. Having not really studied Western mythology, I cannot profess to know the intricacies of the artifact, save that it is powerful enough to warrant stirring the tempers of the Vaalor - a dangerous game, indeed, and certainly not something to pursue on a whim.

Dateline: Day 21 of Eoantos, 5102: Ta'Illistim

There are also other points of conflict beyond the physical battles being waged on elven-held soil - mainly, the clashing of ideologies between traditionalist elves and the sudden influx of helpful Westerners into our lands. Before the appearance of the Dark Alliance, most of our people were content to ignore them as they brought increased trade and other goods. Personally, I find them an interesting lot, but my nature as a scholar lends itself to such friendliness. I never close off a new avenue of information, be it an ancient grimoire or a chipper little human child. But I am not in the majority of my people, I'm afraid - most of the nobility often bring up the Westerners in light conversation, and they joke of their militiaries and other organized efforts, deeming them little more than glorified mercenary bands here to seek the spoils of war. This attitude obviously grates on otherwise amiable Westerners.

The Vaalor, however, are a more stubborn and active lot than the lords and ladies of Ta'Illistim. They reacted to the Westerners far more harshly, believing that they actually thought themselves better than the elite Vaalorian Guard. Several arrests have been made on charges of inciting mobs and other acts of "vigilante justice".

Justice is another point of conflict, as well - I came to be deeply involved in this whole matter through that very issue. Apparently the Westerners among Ta'Illistim have become fed up with the open supporters of the Dark Alliance that came along with them and the apparent lack of punishment from Ta'Illistim. The Vaalor have dealt with this issue in their own usual direct approach already - they have since executed one supporter publically, and have exiled any others they find on their streets as a warning. I have yet to hear of any other suffering stiffer punishment or going against the order of exile.

Regardless, I've been in contact with a few of these visitors from the West and find them a pleasant bunch. As Ta'Illistim's Guard really does not want to bother with them - they dread another embarassment should they, I fear - I spoke to them of the current situation. Ideally, I would be pleased should these supporters be ousted from the city, but politically, it is a messy issue. Ta'Vaalor has it rather easy in this regard - they are usually of one mind on such trivial matters as religion, which is why they were so quick to act on execution and exile.

Our shining city of Ta'Illistim, however, is far different. We have many different factions among the nobility and scholars, and each has an ample amount of political power at their disposal. Such a widespread outlawing of certain religious affiliations could well ruffle the feathers of several organizations currently residing in Ta'Illistim. Not because they have ties to them, mind you, but their ideals and beliefs are rather unorthodox and such a law is reminiscent of the Rysus Codex and other nonsense they enact in the Turamzzyrian Empire. Restrictions like that are frowned upon in a city where the free exchange of knowledge has been fostered for thousands of years.

Beyond all the social issues, however, things seem to be progressing well for our people in the battle against this Dark Alliance. Recently a new threat has reared its head, a psionic by the name of Harith. She apparently - with quite a bit of zeal, I imagine - has declared Ta'Illistim conquered and under the law of the Dark Alliance. While a majority of Ta'Illistim's scholars are unconcerned with her wild claims and the nobility simply finds it another matter to joke about over their meals, a small contingent of researchers in the field of mind magic have been severely disturbed by her presence. They are slowly organizing their efforts into studying ways to combat her, though they are provided little support. After all, most of Ta'Illistim has no use for mind-magic. Ironically, the ones who utilize it most frequently are the Westerners who have come to the city.

Ta'Illistim's Guard, however, has asked the scryers in the city to divine her location. I imagine they wish to prove themselves worthy to defend the Shining City's people from any threat. However, the search has thus far proved fruitless, as Harith appears to be far, far away from Ta'Illistim's physical borders. Her power must be rather exceptional to have reached the thoughts of our city from that great a distance. But, on the other hand, I'm rather positive they are quite limited as well due to being stretched so thin.

The various battles against the Dark Alliance look bright at the time of this writing. While we are not wholly victorious, they are not victorious in the slightest, and each of their attempts to gain an advantage are met with stalwart resistance from elf and Westerner alike.

Turmoil in Ta'Vaalor
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 16 of Eoantos, 5102: Ta'Vaalor

It is well known that there may be an invasion upon us by the remaining forces of the Dark Alliance. This fact has sent a shock wave into the Elven Nations and the surrounding lands. Many travelers are seeking out Ta'Vaalor to get involved in the action, but why?

I've spoken to some who say the only reason they are here is to protect the Griffin Sword pieces from falling into the hands of the Dark Alliance. This is a noble cause, and these are the few who value the lands as a whole, and who wish to protect us from the darkness that lurks in our villages.

Others are here to protect the town from the evils of the Dark Alliance. This is great, but do they realize if the Elves have their say no one of non-Elven origin will be able to protect their homes? The Vaalor Elves will not stand for non-Elven races to join their beloved militia. While they worry about their village's walls, they miss the bigger picture.

One thing is certain, however; if the Elves do not see past their arrogance, the town of Vaalor will surely fall into the depths of darkness. We must be ready for such a threat, for the day will come when we must take up arms and fight for our lives, not for the petty reasons that plague our lives. Fellow Vaalorians, dark times are upon us, let us not go down without a fight.

A Letter from Nevrek, Mayoral Candidate
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 10 of Eoantos, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

Citizens of Wehnimer's Landing,

As a candidate for Mayor, I am asked (and appropriately so) about my plans for the town of Wehnimer's Landing if I am elected. I am often all too happy to answer, since an educated man with a vote is a man with power in hand, but sometimes, despite my willingness to answer such questions, my campaigning schedule and attempts at maintaining personal business affairs make stopping and chatting on my ideas painfully short, or even impossible. With this in mind, I write to this, the Elanthian Journal, in order to better outline my goals for the Landing, should I be elected to office, to a greater number of people. The following is a fairly brief outline, in which a few key goals in my plan for Wehnimer's Landing are described in modest detail.

Economic Revitalization:

Goal A Subsection 14: Develop waterfront of port on Darkstone Bay. On the east side of town, over the bridge, several local businesses are at risk of falling into the bay due to erosion of the shore. Development would introduce non-corrosive glaes pilings and sand-covered gravel beds to reinforce the shoreline.

Goal A Subsection 15: Support for Shipbuilding. Otis the Shipwright, the capable, charismatic, and hard-working foreman and shipwright for most of the shipbuilding in Wehnimer's Landing (approximately 89.4%), is in need of more skilled workers familiar with shipbuilding and lacks the tools necessary to bring the Landing's shipbuilding into the fifty-first century. Support would involve passage for more skilled workers to immigrate to the Landing, train domestic workers, and purchase the necessary tools for the trade.

Social Revitalization:

Goal C Subsection 2: Shanty Town clean-up. We've all walked through Shanty Town, and most of us walk through it as briskly as possible to avoid the bad elements there, or even to avoid being associated with its poverty. The clean-up effort would involve making Shanty Town a more hospitable place, repairing housing, and hiring an additional guard to maintain rounds in its neighborhoods.

Subterranean Infestation:

Goal A Subsection 6: Appraise bounty on Giant Rats. This goal would make the prospect of controlling the Giant Rat population more attractive by raising the bounty on rat pelts two to three coins, making the average quality pelt worth roughly twenty silvers.

Goal B Subsection 3: Investigate Giant Ant infestation. This goal would provide a bounty for Ant Larvae for purposes of study by local alchemists and herbalists to formulate a means of redirecting the ants' territory via the use of scents, poisons, attractants, and deterrents. (Subsection 4 recommends an increase on Giant Ant pincers to keep the population from overgrowth.)

Local Business:

Goal B Subsection 32: Instate new Alchemist. A new building would be erected on the lot of the former Alchemist. Funding for the development would be repaid by the new alchemist over a five year plan.

Goal C, Subsection 1: East Side expansion. The East Side expansion goal would involve developing a string of alleys and paths into a functioning street, then erecting new structures or bringing neighboring existing structures up to current construction codes. (Subsections 2 through 12 involve soliciting entrepreneurial ventures to the new street to increase interest in the East Side and, hence, boost the economy. Some businesses mentioned: a chandler, glass workers and glass-blowing, leather workers, etc.)

This list goes on, as the Goal lettering and subsections should indicate. But much of the list deals in the (mundane) business of Mayor more so than it does to vital improvements or steps toward Wehnimer's Landing's future, like those outlined above regarding the economy and people. Rest assured, though, that the list is substantial.

I now solicit you, Elanthian Journal Reader, not for your vote (though it would be nice), but for you to offer the thought and consideration rightfully due to this election, an event of the utmost gravity. This is for the future of Wehnimer's Landing.

Lord Nevrek Araknathalin Faendryl, Candidate for the Office of Mayor of Wehnimer's Landing

Sylvanfair Turnleaf Festival
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 20 of Imaerasta, 5102: Wehnimer's Landing

On the 20th of Imaerasta, the Day of the Huntress, a parade throughout Wehnimer's Landings announced the first Sylvanfair Turnleaf Festival. After a short welcoming ceremony by the Chairman of the Turnleaf Festival Committee, Dr. Songowl K. Avionis-Regentil, the first round of semifinals of the Turnleaf Open Exposition got underway.

Tinear, Tealcie, the trio "Massies and Pie" (consisting of Macillus, Drazhar, and Gurk), Ranpalandil, and Niere all performed exceptionally. Unfortunately, not everyone can win. Tinear, Ranpalandil, and "Massies and Pie" secured enough points to move on in the competition.

After sunset on Feastday round two of semifinals commenced. Vying for the coveted positions were Jubol, Thaumatous, Tizzrah, Chastity, and the duo of Koin and Vistie. After the points tallying, Jubol, Thaumatous, and Koin and Vistie moved on to the finals. In addition, Chastity was able to move on via the "dark horse" rule.

Throughout Feastday, and early on Restday, Sylvanfair sponsored numerous games of Greedy Gremlins. Winners were Winzaar, Cappurnicus, Lorilea, Dynos, Elidath, Bobmuhthol, and Larenusia. Prize packages were: two spidersilk cloaks (the winners were still getting acquainted with the spiders when last seen), some silver filigreed black boots adorned with a star of flawless white opals and a mechanical nightingale, a sheath containing a blazestar inset kaskara that was not only enchanted four times but produced lightning flares and three suede skirts (the victors left the Tree alternately spinning around causing the full suede skirts to swirl outward and fastidiously picking lint off them).

Restday evening brought the premiere of a new game "Riddles 'n Rhymes." Several teams competed in the game that requires teams to solve riddles that lead to a location and to the identity of an item they must present to receive the next set of riddles. Winning 500k apiece was Team Azure (composed of Dangir, Nicklae, Lynda, Galdecame, Talthan, and Skullock), completing the race with no penalties. Receiving 250k each were members of Team Orange (Composed of Belnia, Xeldria, Lleonie, Sniffle, Ulial, and Laella) in second place after penalty deductions.

On Volnes, at the moment of the Autumnal Equinox, a strange breeze began to blow and sparkling lights flew around the entire Sylvanfair Tree. Spectators stood spellbound watching the foliage change to dazzling shades of red, orange, and yellow. As the wind swirled around the top of the tree, shimmering autumn-hued leaves wafted down where they inexplicably attached themselves to the clothing of the awestruck audience. 'Twas truly something to see.

After the Equinox display, the crowd continued inside for the finals of the Turnleaf Open Exposition. We laughed. We cried. We were thoroughly entertained. The performers truly outdid themselves. After the finalists had performed, the Chairman of the Turnleaf Festival Committee bestowed upon all the semifinalists an extraordinary turning leaf pin.

The scores at the conclusion of the judges' voting reflected a tie for second place. Using the tie-breaking method set forth in the Turnleaf Competions Rules and Judging Guidelines, judges were astonished to discover a further tie! Dr. Songowl K. Avionis-Regentil proclaimed the results as providence. Thus, two Second Place purses of 750k and laurel wreaths of silver were awarded to Chastity and to the trio of "Massies and Pie." The First Place purse of ONE MILLION coins and a laurel wreath of gold was awarded to Ranpalandil! House Sylvanfair would like to thank everyone that come out to celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with us. Congratulations to all the winners in all the events. We look forward to making next year's festival even bigger and better than this year's.

Wexna Ridding, House Sylvanfair

Festival to be Held on Thurfel's Island
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 21 of Eoantos, 5102: Icemule Trace

The firemage Thurfel made an appearance in Town Center in IceMule on Tilamaires, day 19 of the month of Eoantos.

He came to announce the date of the festival he had previously mentioned as in the works to be held on his island before year-end. The date announced was Restday, day 1 of the month of Eorgaen, from midsun to sundown.

Thurfel went on to explain that the Staff of Amasalen had indeed led him to the hiding places of the last four lich vessels (two that were previously undiscovered and two that were in the hands of the liches themselves), and that all nine orbs now reside on the obsidian altar in his vault. Of the previously broken orb, the one known as the divining sphere, Thurfel noted that he had that situation "under control." On Restday, he further stated, he intends to place the staff itself within the altar to forever destroy the power of the liches.

The firemage spoke of the liches being much weakened, but still a danger. Therefore, he wanted assurance that the Northern Fury Guard would be on hand to aid in guaranteeing the safety of the revelers on the island. General Valicar had previously pledged such assurance, and the guard will keep a presence on the island during the festival to minimize any last ditch efforts of the liches at harming the citizenry of the town.

As for the festival itself, Thurfel made mention that he had invited many merchants to come and sell their wares and services to the populace. In addition, he noted that he was having his own staff prepare many culinary delicacies for the event. In particular, the menu will feature many varieties of seafood.

The firemage definitely appeared in a convivial mood and seems totally assured he can indeed stop the liches once and for all.

Snakestone, a master forger, will adorn various metal items with a group's sigil, device or standard for a reasonable fee on the 29th of Eoantos in Solhaven. While his wares are solid, his personality is a bit unpredictable. Group leaders are encouraged to send to their members what their device is ahead of time, to encourage uniformity. A more reasonable fear is that Snakestone, presented ten variations of what the Sigil of the Bear Clan is, will most likely stop working for the Bear Clan if they cannot agree on what their sigil is.

The Ravenheart Militia, based in Wehnimer's Landing, is looking for recruits. Recruits must be dedicated enough to participate in at least one of the two weekly meetings, and must be willing to comply with the rules stated within our by-laws. If interested, please send a runner to Ravenheartmilitia@yahoo.com for further information.

Aerynthe the jewelry maker has announced she will be selecting a few customers of fine taste for custom work by her in Ta'Vaalor on the Day of the Huntress, 6 Eorgaen. Customers who prove themselves to be of poor taste and display this by arguing with Aerynthe will be given the opportunity to discuss it with the Vaalor guardsmen.

NOTICE: The battle on Ta'Vaalor's southern front goes well and the soldiers send their regards to their families. However, the Dark Alliance has begun cowardly attacks and raids upon our northern borders with hordes of lesser undead and other manner of foul creatures. As such, the Guard of Ta'Vaalor will be training any able-minded elf of sound mind and strong body so that we may fight this scourge.
