WAR COMES TO SOLHAVEN!
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 6 of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven

It's here! I don't understand why, but it's really here! Just last week, Solhaven was such a nice and peaceful city, and now all of a sudden, war is knocking at our door!

Why, it wasn't about a year and a half ago that I remember all the fighting and the bloodshed and the horror when that dreadful man came and took over the place, calling it Night Haven. That time it was someone named Draezir, a High Priest of Sheru. And he was downright frightening! Fighting and shadows and huge, mean old jackal statues everywhere you turned. And then there was that horrible, awful fire in the Captain's Rest that burned people alive! But, thank Imaera, he finally left us in peace. I think that he was looking for something and he got it and that's why he left, but I don't really know the details. At least he's gone, and that's all that mattered!

But now it's happening again! Only this time, there's more fire and less shadows, and the fellow who is calling all the shots is called Zerroth. I don't know whose army is scarier, but this one sure knows how to butcher people something awful. Someone said that he's a V'tullian Berserker, and Draezir's friend. No wonder he's so horrible! If he wants something from Solhaven, I hope someone gives him it and leaves us alone!

It's been raining an awful lot lately, but not enough to wash away all of the blood and soot covering the city streets. You can see how bad it is if you look around. All the townsfolk have this haunted look in their eyes, like they've seen what no one should have to see, and, oh dear, the poor children. Their laughter used to ring loud as they played games on sunny afternoons, but now they're hurried to and fro with their parents, silent as dormice.

And when the fighting starts, it's just too terrifying for me to handle! At least there are brave folk like Galesmight, Murp, Brimzstone, Calael, Tyraesa, and Mnar out there to save us. Then others like Starsnuffer and Kinshack are right up front, taking care of everything trying to burn the city, like real life heroes! I just don't know how they can do it. And then folk like Kadesha! She's always running out and back again with those poor, brave people who've lost their lives, then right up and running back out for some more!

I sure hope that this whole war ends soon. It isn't right that it should come here, and by Imaera, I wish I was brave enough to do something about it.

ICEMULE INVITES GIANTMAN CLANS TO JOIN PAGEANT
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 9 of Charlatos, 5104: Icemule

The Icemule Trace City Council today extended an invitation for the Giantman clans to join in their cultural pageant. Ambassadors from the clans expressed their pleasure and declared that this would lead to a grand new era in Giantman-Halfling relations.

"Why shouldn't we invite them?" Jimbla Dabbings, City Council Member, asked. "Poor things don't have any real towns. They need our help and we should provide that if we can. Plus, they are great customers at the Silvermule and the Brawling Tavern."

The inclusion of Giantmen to the Icemule Cultural Pageant should heighten the interest in the event for people from all parts of Elanthia. Well known for their hunting and fighting prowess, the Giantmen are somewhat of a mystery culturally. The pageant will feature demonstrations of their handicrafts and stories from their history.

Although the announcement pleased the Giantman community, rumblings were heard from local half-Krolvins, Gnomes, and Humans, as their petitions to join the celebration were denied.

DARVA'S WINTER FASHION SHOW POSTPONED
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 10 of Charlatos, 5104: none

No doubt the war raging in Solhaven has occupied the headlines these past long days -- and for good reason. It isn't often that the V'tullian Berserker Zerroth comes along to play nasty with his entire army, and when he does, he is difficult to miss.

However, some of the more tragic tales caused by the army have yet to be fully noted. Among them is the second postponement of Darva's Winter Fashion Show, formerly expected to be held at the beginning of this month. While the first delay for the much-anticipated show was due to business competition come in the form of a merchanting Halfling pirate crew, this second push back to avoid unnecessarily bloodying and tearing the new styles on the city's impromptu battlefield has been met with slightly less enthusiasm.

But, fashion victims, have no fear! The lovely Darva has made clear that the show will go on should the city of Solhaven survive in the wake of Zerroth's fiery assault.

PRINCE EREGREK ANNOUNCES DWARVEN PAGEANT
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 10 of Charlatos, 5104: Khazarm-Dzu

Closely following the announcement of the Halfling-Giantman pageant in Icemule Trace, Prince Eregrek declared that Kharam-Dzu would host a similiar pageant, highlighting Dwarven culture.

The prince was taciturn, giving no comments beyond the initial announcement. But court officials suggested that he was irked to hear of the Icemule pageant and was heard to mutter that, "Icemule gets all the tourists. We need something besides the volcano to get people into the inns."

The reaction to Prince Eregrek's announcement among the residents of Kharam-Dzu was generally positive. Residents report that the shopkeepers are ordering new signs for their stores in anticipation for a rush of visitors. Streets are being swept clean of ash. A group of concerned citizens has declared war on the local scourge of cinder wasps, lest their presence annoy the expected crowds.

Not all reaction was positive, however. The crew of the Glaesan Star, anticipating an increased workload during the event, is demanding higher wages.

DEFENSE RALLIES IN SOLHAVEN
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 9 of Charlatos, 5104: Solhaven

In light of the recent advances by the V'tullian Berserker Zerroth's army on the freeport city of Solhaven, numerous militias from both sides of the Dragonspine have banded together to provide the locals with much-needed aid. Kilthal, Captain of the Solhaven militia, H.E.R.T., has been coordinating the defense against the invading force. Directly aiding him are Ezre, Captain of the medical Triage, and Lhel, a Lieutenant of the same unit.

Of the militias, the Northern Fury, led by Valicar, and by Syberus in his absence; the Snarian Guard, led by Maeillwynn; the Silver Gryphons, led by Cryheart; the Ardenai Temple Knights, led by Elrodin, and with local liaison Dragolyn; and the Zul Logothian Territorial Guard, led by Kneo, all have pledged support in the defense of Solhaven. Also formally promising aid are the Second Militia of Ta'Vaalor, represented by Goonkah, Harrin, and Ferdirand; the Black Wolf Clan, led by Syrile; House Onoir, led by Tebon; Willow Hall, led by Tunder; House Sovyn, led by Nithili; as well as a number of Restafarians and the River's Rest West Road Mobile Tower Combined Fightin' Bridgade from the Barony of Torre, headed by Nilandia and Railien. Those seeking to aid the militias directly in the war should contact the named individuals.

Preparations are continually underway in anticipation of repeated strikes. Sacks full of conjured and foraged herbs, strength-imbedded items, life keeping flasks, pure potions, and additional magical items are being collected and distributed among the defense. Supplies for the various ballista towers, including oil, bows, arrows, and cut logs, are also being stocked between skirmishes. However, defenders are urged to carry them on their person or to store them in secure locations during the lulls to help counter Alliance sabotage.

The Triage points designated for tending to the wounded and dead are located in the Captain's Rest and in the garden of Oleani's temple. Should conditions prove too dangerous, the latter is to be abandoned and defenders to withdraw to inside of the temple. The Broken Tower and Liabo Plaza should not be used as they are extremely vulnerable and easily overrun. The recommended tactic utilizing those locations is a fog-and-run to avoid increased death counts. Those rescuers who make use of a spirit fog instead of that provided by the Order of Voln should call for aid to Lem's Spirits of the Delta on the Market Bridge, as it is under cover.

Should fires break out in the city again, Brother Kindarel has offered sale of buckets to carry water in his Priestly Purchases shop, near Koar's temple. They can be refilled most readily at Niima's shrine, Oleani's pond, Ronan's pond, Jastev's fountain, and the Zoo's pond to help quell the flames. Due to the recent effectiveness of the V'tullian forces in close combat, defenders are urged to use weapons that they do not cherish lest they be wrenched from their hands on the battlefield or lost entirely.

The citizens of Solhaven would like to relate their most heartfelt gratitude to all of the brave militias and individuals rallying to her defense. A special mention of appreciation is reserved for Baron Malwind for his troops, and for Priestess Daemere for her aid.

THE AFTERMATH OF THE SPITFIRE
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 1 of Charlatos, 5104: Wehnimer's Landing

As the citizens and visitors of Wehnimer's Landing stood around the middle dock and watched the Halfling pirates pull away on the Spitfire, the surrounding caravan of merchants packed it in and headed off for new horizons. The canvases have been rolled up, the tent poles have been taken down, and the wagons have packed up and rolled away. Makeshift structures were torn down, the wares were carefully packaged, and slowly the crowds thinned.

After speaking with many shop owners around town, it seems that most felt both good and bad about the Spitfire's departure. They can now return to a less hectic day, keeping their storefronts clean and tidy. Now that the merchant caravan has gone, the townsfolk will start returning to them to purchase the goods that they need. The one bad thing they all tend to agree upon is the trash that has been strewn all across the cobblestones and roads that run through the town.

The aftermath looked much like a scene reminiscent of the large scale invasions plaguing other towns. Left in the wake of the merchant caravan were streets riddled with garbage, discarded wares, and leftover rotting food. The shop owners were in a state of disarray as they tried to clean as much as possible, and the janitor was left standing in the middle, practically pulling out his hair. I made my way through the pile of litter and attempted to get an exclusive interview to see what his plan of action was to return our city streets to the order they held just one month earlier.

As the scowling janitor gazed down upon me, I thought he was going to sweep me right into the pile of garbage growing at his feet! He claimed he had "Never seen this much garbage lyin' round here before," and that "These damn out o'towners have no respect for this 'ere city!" We chatted a bit under the midday sun and he claimed he would be in need of some extra help to clean up the mess left behind. Now, being ever so helpful as I could be, I told him to place a classified ad in this periodical to get the much-needed assistance.

The janitor's eyes brightened at this suggestion, and he promised to submit it later in the week. He also wished for me to print this request to travelers visiting our town: "Next time you folks visit our town, you be sure to mind the streets and keep yer kids and animals on a leash! Yer needin' to pick up after yerself so the shopowners don't come yellin' at me. We don't care if you come here, but next time I'm luggin' this here trash to yer cities and droppin' it at yer gates!"

I thanked him for his time and made my way through the seemingly never-ending pile of trash. I breathed a sign of relief (well I actually tried not to breathe much because of the smell, but that's a different story), and I was glad to know that I would not be the one to have to tackle that task. I definitely had my eyes opened to just how much work goes into the janitor keeping our city streets clean. So remember - clean up after yourselves!

GNOMES CRY FOUL!
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 12 of Charlatos, 5104:

Groups of Gnomes in Icemule and Kharam-Dzu protested their exclusion from the cultural pageants planned by those municipalities. According to Ipsington Blanderstroke, president of the National Assembly of Gnomes (NAG), these pageants are nothing but greedy schemes by Halflings and Dwarves to attract tourist dollars and oppress the indomitable Gnomish races.

"Why can't we have a cultural pageant?" Blanderstroke whined loudly. "We're just as good as they are and almost as tall. It's oppression, I tell you!"

Blanderstoke then went on to complain about slights suffered by gnomes through the centuries from nearly all the races. "Except for the Nalfein elves," he added. "They are just peachy."

~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~

Dateline: Day 3 of Charlatos, 5104: Wehnimer's Landing

As most of ya know, there were tons of them merchant types here in Landin' last month fer that damn Halflin' pirate ship and the caravan that came with it. There seems to be a ton o' trash layin 'round in the streets. If yer lookin to make some quick silver (it ain't much, but it's still silver), a free meal a day (now, it's gonna be some o' Helga's stew, but it's still free), and a frosty ale at the end of the day (well it might be warm, but you can think cold thoughts) -- Anyway, if yer up fer it, come and find me in town. I'll be in the streets near where the caravan was, just look fer the guy with the broom standin' in a pile of trash.
