Undercurrent - A NotB Vignette
People walk throughout Shimmarglin Court, their eyes drawn to the shop windows. A pair of ladies sighs as they gaze at a poster tacked up next to a white marble building.
“I had such hope for the summer season,” one comments sadly.
“What season? There have been no balls, no gatherings, no anything,” the other replies, her voice climbing to a shrill cry.
“What is there to celebrate?” the first retorts, her voice edged with anger. “People disappeared, and the guard does not show any signs of caring except for these stupid posters no one even looks at. And, what is our Argent Mirror doing except hiding out in the Keep pretending everything is perfect.”
Trying the doorknob, the other lets out a cry of frustration. “Where is Linsandral? Why doesn’t anyone care that he is missing? Why won’t the guard take action? At least Lady Ardtin shows some concern. My husband says that his friends feel she should be back on the throne and that we should look to her for guidance and leadership.”
“The undercurrent of anger is like a thick fog drifting about the city. Something has to happen, and soon, or I fear for the stability of our beautiful city.” Shouts of anger float in from another street as an argument breaks out. Rubbing her hands together nervously, she continues, “I think we should go home. Tensions seem to be running high today.”
Giving each other a quick hug, the ladies lower their heads and hurriedly walk off.
