Title: Even Death Could not Silence Me

Author: Opalina Jalcon

From the journals of Opalina Jalcon- 2002

The cold had never frightened me.

Not the biting wind that swept through Icemule's streets. Not the ice beneath my boots. Not even the chill that settled into my bones whenever the Council's shadow reached our town.

Fear had worn many faces.

This day it wore crimson eyes.

I carried my little sign high above my head, marching beneath the statue of the mule while curious eyes followed me. Some smiled. Some worried. Some thought me foolish.

Perhaps I was.

"Icemule will be free."

The words echoed across the square like a prayer.

I sang of peace because I believed peace was worth fighting for. I shouted for freedom because silence had never saved anyone. If the Council wished me hidden, then they would have to watch me stand in the brightest place I could find.

Then the flames came.

He stepped from fire itself—a thing that had once been a halfling but now wore only hatred. Aslakian.

His voice carried no anger. Only certainty.

"Surrender it."

As though we possessed what he sought.

As though terror would loosen our tongues.

Friends begged me to run.

"Run, Opal!"

I heard them.

I simply shook my head.

"I will not run anymore."

Perhaps that was courage.

Perhaps it was exhaustion.

I had spent too long hiding from whispers in the dark.

The lich pointed.

The world froze around me.

I could not move. Could not speak. Yet somewhere inside that stillness, my heart refused to kneel.

If I was to become an example...

...then let it be an example of defiance.

The flames consumed me.

Pain vanished almost as quickly as it came.

Then there was only silence.

Strangely...death was not empty.

I watched my friends rally. I watched healers rush forward while others still argued with the monster. Even as a ghost I found my voice.

"Freedom for Icemule!"

Even without breath...

...I could still speak.

Even without a heartbeat...

...I could still hope.

The lich mocked us. Burned more of my friends. Called us fools and children.

Yet every death brought another soul willing to stand beside us.

They could scorch flesh.

They could not burn conviction.

When at last he cast me beyond the world itself, I drifted through a place where time folded over itself like broken pages in an unread book. Stars surrounded me. Memories chased me. Every step felt as though I had already taken it a thousand times before.

The void wanted me to forget who I was.

Instead I shouted into eternity.

"You aren't godly!"

The only answer was my own echo.

Then another.

"Icemule will be free!"

Even the endless darkness could not swallow those words.

When I finally stumbled back into the world—cold, battered, and impossibly alive—I understood something I hadn't before.

Freedom is not won by those who never fall.

It belongs to those who rise every single time they do.

The Council believed death was enough.

They were wrong.

Because I had crossed flame, silence, and time itself...

...and I still carried the same promise in my heart.

Icemule will be free.
