In addition to weapons/armor, slabs can also be melted in the crucibles, either instead of or in addition to gear. Also, it's not limited to gear from the loot system. Gear bought from town shops or acquired by other means should work just fine in crucibles so long as they INSPECT as a metal it recognizes, it's only player-forged weapons that have been excluded.
