Teras Lavafly

Once deeply nestled in the jungles of Teras Isle, the lavafly remained hidden from the island's inhabitants for many years. These tiny flying insects have the same physical characteristics as your typical firefly, and also emit syncopated blinks of bioluminescent light to communicate with each other in the same manner as their mainland cousins. Recent volcanic activity along the River Muagh has forced these little bugs to migrate from their usual nesting grounds in the jungles, and they have now revealed themselves to the island's inhabitants.

Different from the typical firefly, a lavafly starts its life emitting a dull, ruddy glow that pulses gently rather than blinks. As the creature ages over several months and prepares to find a mate, it begins to blink with increasing intensity and learns the language of its kind through social interactions with other lavaflies in its nest. During the month of Lumnea is when they become more active, moving beyond their nest to find other lavaflies. It is during this time that the blinking of crimson and sanguine reds can be seen along the bank of the River Muagh.

How long these critters remain before they find a new place to hide on Teras Isle is currently unknown. For now, the lavafly has revealed itself to Elanthia, and it may be here to stay.
