The Griffin Sword Saga (storyline)/2002-05-22 - Kendryth's Rescue (log)

Ulstram had previously asked that word be sent out that he was looking for volunteers to help him rescue Kendryth. On 5/22/02, he emerges from the temple surprised that so many have gathered. He cautions that he can only take a small group of no more than eight people, as any larger numbers could compromise the mission and raise the alarm within the camp. Kendryth is known to be shackled and poisoned, his life fading. Ulstram searches among those gathered and finds eight, each of whom have different skillsets that he believes may be useful in the rescue. He gathers them close, using a major sanctuary to discuss the particulars of the plan with them so that unfriendly ears cannot overhear. After the sanctuary is dispersed, those gathered give final well wishes or advice to the small group.

They depart, Ulstram's magic transporting them directly into the Luukosian camp in a quiet corner. An unexpected addition among them leads to Kevralynn raising her voice in alarm before the extra party member is sent back. In spite of the commotion, the mission is successful; the lone guard overseeing Kendryth's captivity is taken care of quietly, and they return to the Landing before a greater alarm can be sounded amid the camp.

Safely back in the Landing, Kendryth's wounds are evident. The Luukosians had tortured him for information, and he was on the verge of death. Several helped to heal his blood loss slow the poison, but he collapses. Clergy from the temple take him back inside, where he can rest and recover. While there is excitement that the mission was a success, there is also a growing concern that the Luukosian forces will retaliate for the perceived loss. Some want to strike back at them in greater numbers, though Ulstram chides them for their hubris, insisting that it would be a fool's errand. He confirms that he knows where the armies are but is not sure if they will return to the Landing tonight. After all, they already got what they wanted from the Landing the night before. And there are four sword shards to find.

Preparation

You hear the subdued thoughts of Galesmight echo in your mind:
"Any an' all that are fine tuned in the art of hiding and stalking or all around being sneaky head way towards the temple.  Ulstram comes soon to pick the best of the best to do some researching in the wilds."

The dome of a large temple rises before you, its surface blackened with soot and accumulated ash.  The circular building is surrounded by marble porticos and teak columns, also partially cracked and ruined.  A promenade leads between two pillars to the inner sanctum, which appears to be still intact.  Priests, acolytes and monks shift through the rubble on the street, attempting to clear away the wreckage.  A locked almsbox hangs loosely on an iron pole.  You also see a stone heart, a stone heart, a stone heart, a cracked rod, a handaxe, a glowing white stone and a wrought-iron gate.

Kevralynn says, "Whenever the Prophet appears again."

Ichiko says, "Lord Ulstram must be planning this very carefully"

Ulstram slowly walks out of the temple, his staff touching the ground just in front of him.

You see Ulstram Chanerser the Elven Prophet.
He is of an undeterminable age, has long, straight white hair, pointed ears, and fair skin.
He has jagged scars marring his face where his eyes should be.
He is in good shape.
He is holding an ebonwood staff inlaid with slivers of ivory in his left hand.
He is wearing a slender white-gold circlet inlaid with a cabochon onyx, a fine silver chain bearing a gold-inlaid onyx key, a black velvet cloak trimmed with golden knotwork, some long flowing white velvet robes embroidered with golden spirals, a supple white leather pouch and a pair of white leather sandals.

Perigourd bows to Ulstram.

Boomsplat bows to Ulstram.

Cryheart turns to face Ulstram.

Kevralynn says, "Hurrah."

Ichiko bows to Ulstram.

Turinrond bows to Ulstram.
Turinrond cracks his knuckles!

Ulstram cocks his head.

Tebon says, "G'eve Ulstram"

Ulstram says softly, "Quite a few more here than I expected."

Tebon says, "A group 'as been formed, good Prophet"
Tebon says, "Dey stand wit me"

Gowain says, "You asked for help, many answered"

Chaaron says, "YOu asked that we send word"

Turinrond strides over to stand before Tebon.

Ardwen says, "Half are spies I expect Ulstram"

Ulstram nods to Ardwen.

Ulstram rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Tebon says, "I 'ave assembled a split force, as ye's suggested"
Tebon says, "An' a plan of action 'as been laid out, upon yer approval of course"
Tebon says, "Though wit some of tha shady characters about, I wish ta nay speak of it here in tha open"

Turinrond nods to Tebon.

Gowain furrows his brow.

Kevralynn softly kisses her Huntress symbol, murmuring to herself.

Ulstram says softly, "As I said, this silence and stealth is the goal.  We will not attack unless we absolutely have to."

You hear the voice of Shaykee say, "aye, shady ones about fer sure"

Kevralynn says, "There is too many snakes here."

Ulstram says softly, "I have located the place where they hold my Ward, and he is fading."

Murp frowns.

Kadesha winces.

Ardwen asks, "Fading?"

Ulstram says softly, "They have poisoned him."

A pained expression crosses Chaaron's face.

Tebon frowns.

Kadesha snarls menacingly!

Kevralynn says, "We need to hurry."

Murp taps a bundle of pulsating firethorns.
Murp says, "I gots some firethorns that should cure him."

Turinrond nods to Murp.

Tebon says, "M'lord, ifin ye's whisper tha directions ta me ear, I shall be about as quickly as we kin run der"

Arimantis asks, "Are ya able ta guide us there?"

Ulstram says softly, "However, they have him in the center of their swarm, and there is only one place that is not guarded where we can gain enterance."

Turinrond raises an eyebrow.

Gowain says, "then direct us to it"

Ulstram says softly, "I will lead the group in, and out."

Kevralynn rolls her eyes.

Raon says, "Then let us do it."

Turinrond nods to Ulstram.

Songowl says, "whether you value it or not, my opinion is that he is being used specifically as bait"

Cryheart says, "Ulstram...I have some ochre -colored fungus that will cure some types of poison"

Galesmight asks, "Will we send anyone in in advanced Ulstram?"

Dravnum says, "we need a diversion "
Dravnum says, "a small attack on one side of them while you sneak in and get him out"

Ulstram says softly, "Diversions will not be needed, we're going in silent."

Galesmight nods to Ulstram.
Galesmight says, "I can deal with that."

Raon says, "Silence is my middle name."
Raon scratches at a carved bone Onar symbol.

Ulstram says softly, "However, I will not be able to take you all, this is far too many to risk our goal."

Cryheart says, "aye....will need a few to be silent"
Cryheart nods to Ulstram.

You think to yourself, "Ahh.. now to see who it will be.  And if I can follow.. even better."

Valicar says, "the risk is our own"

Tebon says, "The risk is also on Kendryth"

Ulstram says softly, "The risk is my Ward, and I will not risk him."

Ulstram says softly, "If they sense us coming, they will kill him, and then us."

Kevralynn says, "I think they already know."
Kevralynn says, "There are enough of his spies here."

Ulstram says softly, "As of now, they only have one guard guarding him, but as I said there are thousand surrounding the area where they stay."

Raon says, "Say the word and he dies."
Raon nods to Ulstram.
Raon says, "The guard that is."

Ulstram says softly, "One wrong move, and the horde will be down upon us all."

Gowain says, "then we will sneak by , a simple task"

Murp says, "perhaps we can silence the single guard before he can raise a cry."

Galesmight says, "Aye a dagger will do."
Galesmight nods to Murp.

Raon says, "And he dies... silently."
Raon smirks.

Murp grins.

Ulstram rubs his chin thoughtfully.

Tebon says, "Meny of us, our presence kinnae be detected magically an' we 'ave tha ability of invisibility as well"
Tebon nods to Ulstram.
Tebon says, "We are all protected an' ready ta serve in yer aid"

Ariond asks, "might someone cast unpresence on me as well?"
Ariond shifts his weight.

Ulstram says softly, "They have other means of detection."

Galesmight says, "They are very good at smelling things."

Ulstram says softly, "Hopefully, with us appearing in the middle of their land, they won't suspect us."

Tebon says, "Nae doubt ta dat, we kin only prepare as best we kin"
Tebon nods to Ulstram.

Turinrond nods to Ulstram.

Galesmight asks, "Will the group go on foot?"

Shaykee says, "should mebee takes me boots off ta soften da footsteps"

Ulstram touches one finger to his lips.

Gowain says, "shall we follow you then, Prophet? We are prepared."

Ulstram cocks his head.

Kevralynn nods to Ariond.

Galesmight says, "WEll do we have a potion to heal Kendryth Ulstram?  He could be weak and not able to move him when we do reach him."

You say, "Greetings, blind prophet.  I've come to aid your strike into the camp."

Kevralynn says, "Ha."

Ulstram says softly, "I have said I cannot take you all, too great of a number and we will surely be detected."

Tebon says, "Pick whom ye's wish ta journey wit ye's den, good Prophet"
Tebon says, "Meny stand ready"

You say, "Wise decision.  A smaller force, though more easily destroyed, would still have a greater chance within the camp."

Boomsplat nods to you.

Clintmire says, "We will trust you choise in companions on this dangerous journey."

Galesmight says, "Ye may need a good empath."
Galesmight asks, "Should we call for an' empath or too?"

You ask, "Perhaps some who are accustomed to using the shadows in invisibility would be best?"
You cock your head at Boomsplat.

Boomsplat says, "Amulets is'ums fer da weak....Boom nae'ums need."

Kevralynn says, "Come along Alisaire, I'll aquaint ye to the ground."

(Tebon whispers to Ulstram)

Ulstram turns his face about the crowd.

Elfstan asks, "Ulstram, is Kendryth's guard livin'?"

Ulstram says softly, "So far as I can tell, yes."

Ulstram nods to Elfstan.

Galesmight says, "Alisaire's heart will change one day ... please ignore her .. taunting only feeds the evil growing with in."

Elfstan says, "Then I'll grab me axe instead."

You say, "Perhaps I should prove my worth in this endevour."
You nod to Galesmight.
You ask, "A change of heart now, eh?"

Kevralynn says, "Nah, she will pay like the rest of her brethren."

You say, "If I aid you, then you know i stand by the town.  If I do not, then feel free to strike me down within the camp."

Galesmight says, "That is not for me to decide Alisaire."

You nod to Galesmight.
You turn to face Ulstram.
You ask, "Then what of you, prophet?"

Ulstram rubs his chin thoughtfully.

You ask, "So, what say you, prophet?  A noted traitor, to each side now.  Isn't this a prime opportunity to prove one's worth?"
You cock your head at Ulstram.

Ulstram says softly, "All right."

You say, "And if not.. all may strike me down."
You nod to Ulstram.
Alisaire smiles faintly.

Cryheart touches one finger to his lips.

You say, "My thanks for the permission."

Ardwen says, "Prime to prove yer worth to either side"

Tebon says, "Ulstram, M'lord Prophet, ifin ye's wish, might ye's join my group, an' those dat were picked from yer earlier words, ye's kin speak wit or talk to"

Raon says, "Silent but deadly is best."
Raon smiles wickedly.

Boomsplat nods to Raon.

Ulstram says softly, "I will only need eight people for this mission, anymore and we will be detected."

Murp says, "I'll volunteer..."

Gowain nods to Ulstram.

Ratolin says, "I wish to be included."

Turinrond strides a few steps forward.

Ardwen raises his hand.

Shaykee raises his hand.

Kadesha frowns.

Earthdiver says, "i'll go"

You nod to Ulstram.

Kevralynn says, "My blade is your's m'lord."

Sraven raises her hand.

Atoyoz turns to face Ulstram.

Boomsplat says, "Boom much'ums wants ta save Pald'n."
Boomsplat nods.

Turon asks, "Er, can i help?"

Ulstram says softly, "I have looked within all of you, and have found those who are able to help in various ways."

Dravnum says, "three rogues, two fighters, one cleric, two rangers"

Elfstan says, "If'n ye ask, me axe is yers."
Elfstan nods to Ulstram.

Raon says, "And mine."

Turon says, "Im a wizard"

Valicar says, "listen up. he will name the rescue force"

Clintmire says, "Probably little need for a simple goat herder"

Jypsie says, "Why don't you all calm down and let him choose"

Krissella shrugs.

Cryheart says, "let the good prophet select his group"

Galesmight says, "Good guides him."

Ardwen says, "Ahm available fer bribes ta guards"

Scheree says, "those of us that stay need to pay attention to the towns defenses"

Ulstram says softly, "Please offer your hands towards me, so I might take you into my group."

Ulstram says softly, "I have plans I will speak of in secret to those who will come with me.  I do not want to risk those of the dark to tell their masters where we come from."

"We're asking anyone available to help fix up the town to go sw, w outside the north gate and help us cut down trees.  About 100 are needed per building an' it be tough work.  Axes are available if ye don't have one - please come help"

Calean says, "When they raid, almost certain to be a response...maybe.."

The burnt-out frames of several small shops crowd along the street, which is composed of the scarred and burnt walls of the buildings bordering the central square.  Among the remnants of shops are overturned pushcarts and stands that bespeak the prosperous trade that once flourished in this area.  A few fragmented bones lie near the carts, the only sign that any hawkers were ever here.  You also see the clerics' shop.

Ulstram says softly, "We shall return swiftly, I hope."

Ulstram lowers his head and whispers a soft prayer.  A small breeze picks up as tendrils of golden light slowly appear and begin to swirl around Ulstram.

The Encampment

Ulstram transports the small group to the Luukosian encampment. There, they managed to sneak in without alerting the attention of any guards and find Kendryth, who was wounded and poisoned and barely clinging on to life. The lone guard overseeing where he was imprisoned is taken care of quietly, and they are able to return back to the Landing without raising too much of an alarm.

[Encampment]
A ragged and burnt-looking tree pokes up from the edge of this small hillock, and the back of a wagon casts a patch of shadow over the entire area.  Dark log walls, their tops sharpened into spikes, ascend high over the night sky.  Through the gaps in the walls, you can see numerous dark figures in the distance moving around cookfires.

The dome of a large temple rises before you, its surface blackened with soot and accumulated ash.  The circular building is surrounded by marble porticos and teak columns, also partially cracked and ruined.  A promenade leads between two pillars to the inner sanctum, which appears to be still intact.  Priests, acolytes and monks shift through the rubble on the street, attempting to clear away the wreckage.  A locked almsbox hangs loosely on an iron pole.  You also see a white cat who is sitting, a hawk, a grey wolf who is sitting, a white cat who is sitting, a bundle of stone hearts, an ogre nose, a glowing white stone and a wrought-iron gate.

Kendryth Rescued

The crowd outside of Lorminstra's Temple mills about, waiting. Some take advantage of the time to go out and cut down trees to help with the rebuilding efforts. Most, however, are content to wait. Because all group members were unpresenced before leaving, even those in Voln cannot watch what unfolded within the encampment.

Kadesha says, "well that shoulda left any snakes in the dust"
Kadesha chuckles.

Kabriel says, "Aye.  And if they come at us, to combat them with every weapon and magic we can."
Kabriel says, "Mayhaps we should be prepared in case they do invade now."

Cryheart says, "hmm...anyone gets too anxious to wait...go chop down some trees just southwest and west of the north gate...drag the logs back to the North Gate"


You hear the subdued thoughts of Lytir echo in your mind:
"for those of you just tuning into the net - we are trying to rebuild our town and need as many people as possible to help cut down trees sw, w outside the gate - there should be an axe available if you don't have one.  We need 100 trees per building apparently and so far have 148, so all help is greatly appreciated!"

You hear the faint thoughts of Lurch echo in your mind:
"The result of the other night cannot be undone, which leaves the question...What are we prepared to do about it NOW?"

You hear the faint thoughts of Zacciwie echo in your mind:
"Or the next time it happens"

Zacciwie says, "Doesn't have to be. Anybody of Voln can look in on them or so he said"

Kadesha says, "they are unpresenced, Zacciwie"

Zacciwie says, "Then he lied"

Krynith asks, "What did he have to say?"

Krissella says, "He took a group to rescue the ward. A group of eight handpicked people."

Ardwen says, "Ahm waitin for Luukos ta counteraatck"
Ardwen says, "Luukos tends ta have reptilian followers"

Cosgrave says, "fixated on snakes... we might have to send you to a nice padded cell on teras when this is all over with"

A pinpoint of golden light floats into the room and settles just a few feet above the ground, thrumming with power.

Slowly, the pinpoint of light expands into an orb as wisps of golden light flicker across the area.  Within the orb you see Ulstram and his group standing together, Ulstram's head lowered and his lips moving.  After a moment, Ulstram raises his head, and the sphere dissolves into motes of light.

He is in good shape.
He is wearing a small golden crown pendant, a dark golden golvern shield inlaid with a lustrous white-gold crown, a massive white-gold sheath, a billowing white cape heavily worked with patterns of golden knotwork, a pair of dark leather boots reinforced with plates of rolaren, and a suit of golden golvern plate traced with dark rolaren filigree.

Chaaron turns to Ulstram and cheers!

Perigourd rubs Kendryth gently.

Tebon moves to stand in front of Kendryth.

Ulstram says softly, "Ah, just in time."

Gowain rubs Kendryth gently.

Ichiko slowly empties her lungs.

Wakim says, "heal Kendryth"

Clintmire says, "Help Kendryth"

Kabriel asks, "Where would he go next, Ulstram?"

Zacciwie says, "Near Solhaven probably. There's been an increase in Luukosians there"

Gowain says, "you should get him to a place of saftey, to recover"
Gowain nods to Ulstram.

Ulstram nods to Gowain.

Kendryth says, "Couldn't see.. just the sky and the tops of trees.."

Prospera asks, "Inside perhaps?"

You hear the faint thoughts of Dravnum echo in your mind:
"Ulstram just led a small group of people after him, They retrieved him by stealth but were detected ont he way out"

Kabriel asks, "Well...where would the force go next if not to this town?"
Kabriel peers quizzically at Ulstram.

Scheree says, "they know he is gone"

Ulstram says softly, "They will continue searching the continent for a piece of the Sword."

Ulstram glances at you.

You nod to Ulstram.

Arimantis asks, "Was it Luukos's camp.. or one of the other of the alliance.. or a group camp?"

Songowl says, "the creatures present suggest a Luukosian nature"

Gowain says, "they all use the rats, hard to say who was in charge"

Tebon asks, "M'lord Prophet, shall we move tha Paladin inta Her temple?"

Ulstram nods to Tebon.

Ulstram says softly, "Let's go inside."

Ulstram says softly, "Come, Ward."

Kendryth collapses on the ground.  After a moment, a few priests pick him up and haul him inside the temple.

You glance at the large temple.

Kadesha asks, "Ulstram, uh, where did Sir Kendryth go now? recovering?"

Galesmight says, "He collapsed Kadesha."
Galesmight says, "Priests brought him inside."
Galesmight points at the large temple.

Ulstram nods.

Ulstram says softly, "The local clergy have taken him inside to recover."

Krissella says, "I'll bring you back, Lady. Sorry for the trouble."

Kevralynn says, "It proves that they are not unbeatable either."

Ulstram says softly, "When he is of strength, he will be told as to what has happened in his absence, and then we shall see about getting some repair done."

Corlith says, "hopefully they wont have follwed you back"

Kadesha asks, "Ulstram? do you sense any more attacks against the Landing? or another city threatened?"

Ulstram says softly, "I do not sense anything near, no."

Songowl says, "as far as we know, they do not have a piece of the sword, thus, they no longer have anything we want, so it is needless to be the agressor"

Clintmire says, "I for one do not wish to return to the camp anytime soon"

Tebon nods.

Songowl says, "attacking them would gain us nothing.. they currently have nothing we need"

Ulstram says softly, "We are also in need of wood.  The Lower Dragonsclaw forest has trees that need to be harvested, so we may rebuild this town, and its defenses.  If you have time, that would be of use."

Valicar asks, "we wont ever win this battle without taking the attack to them...why defend the town when we can force them to defend their own camp?"

Prospera says, "We need more handaxes, Cry.."

Lurch says, "Our gains could not be measured so easily.  A force in defense cannot itself attack."

Ulstram says softly, "Once my Ward has recovered, I will see that he starts on plans for fortification, rebuilding and defense of this town."

Gowain says, "I am pleased that we were successful in our quest Prophet, go see to your ward, we will carry on with the act of healing here."
Gowain bows to Ulstram.

Chaaron asks, "what about the sword?"

Ulstram says softly, "The Pieces of the Sword are still out there, somewhere."

Elfstan says, "Ulstram... we 'ad a visit yesterday night..."

Ulstram cocks his head at Elfstan.

Wakim says, "can't say as I agree with your Strategy Ulstram, you don't win wars from a defensive position"

Valicar says, "Ulstram, I find it very alarming that you do not see the tactical advantage in an offensive. That is what my group specializes in. If you will not assist us in this endevour, I hope the Ward gets well soon enough to show us to their camp."

Ulstram says softly, "Defense is the only position we have at the moment, we do not know where the pieces are."

Songowl says, "Valicar, if you wish to be foolish enough to stage a meaningless assault, feel free, but it will gain you nothing.. perhaps even agitate them"

Jipzy asks, "Holsworth.......what's he been doin aroun here?"

Gowain says, "having seen the encampment, from its center, I can tell you that an attack against it would be an utter defeat, we should be more interested in replacin that gate for when they return"

Prospera asks, "Why do you stand here and mock the Prophet?"

Scheree whispers, "how did you get in his group without him knowing?"

Elfstan nods to Ulstram.

Darqwolf asks, "so, what means will we have when they arrive here .. if we can't defeat them there ?"

Elfstan says, "Aye, exactly."

Gowain says, "it wont hold at all in its current condition"

Ulstram says softly, "The Empire doesn't wish to destroy, they'll wish enslavement of those lower than them."

Boomsplat nods to Ulstram.

Valicar says, "I think that the merits and potential of an organized offensive is not realized here, Songowl. It has afterall only happened one other time, to great success."

Elfstan says, "I 'ppreciate yer lettin' Kendryth know, Ulstram, may'ap 'e'd 'ave a good plan.  An' we oughta check out the river gates an' make sure they work, just in case."

Ulstram nods to Elfstan.

Dravnum says, "Until they move  from their camp its a waste to attack them. Once they move then you attack the falnks and supply lines to weaken them when they are away from a base of power"

Ulstram begins chuckling at Songowl.

Lurch says, "Then we should at least be scouting them"

Scheree whispers, "when one knows very little about someone they proceed with caution unfortunantly everyone has reason to question a good many things including words"

Songowl waves his hand in a dismissive gesture.

Valicar says, "If any among you are tired of playing at practice target for the invaders, join me now."

Atoyoz curtsies to Ulstram.

Ulstram says softly, "Again, please help collect wood, and give aid to those commoners who have lost much."

Ulstram slowly walks into the temple.
