The Trip verb makes use of a polearm, quarterstaff, or runestaff to knock an opponent off his or her feet. Training in the skill related to the weapon, Polearm Weapons or Two-handed Weapons, is recommended prior to using this skill. Also, training in the Combat Maneuver, Trip will help.
