The war mattock is one of many large Two-Handed Weapons that is effective against players and creatures in all armor types. It evolved from tools used to dig trenches. Much like the military pick, the mattock bears a spike which is attached at a right angle to the haft. However, on the other side the war mattock bears a flat edge which was once used for digging. Since the war mattock does only crushing damage, it is possible to guarantee, with a high enough endroll, a fatal result with aimed attacks to the target's head. This is due to the combination of game mechanics involving critical randomization and the instant death result from a rank 5 crush critical to the target's head.

Maul used to be an alternate verb for a War mattock. Some old mauls are still mattock base, and can be converted to the maul base at a portal in the local weapons shop. The two bases are still extremely similar.
