Some of the additives create colors that are typically against [[alteration]] rules. The character must provide the glowing dye to the merchant to apply to the item being worked on. Whether or not they will depends on the particular merchant, of course, because some merchants might be anti-magical or whatever and not feel they can. That's an [[IC]] stance for a merchant. The item may require more than one dose of dye. |

;Glowing scenarios: |
|||
# Player A has "a glowing vermilion dye" and presents a dyeable item to a merchant and requests the item's color be glowing vermilion. The GM can do this. Whether or not they will depends on the particular merchant, of course, because some merchants might be anti-magical or whatever and not feel they can. That's an [[IC]] stance for a merchant. From a rules stance, this would be allowable and if that merchant denied it ICly, you can still go elsewhere and get it done. |
|||
# Player A has the same dye and item but wants the color to be glowing viridian. The GM cannot do this. The color you dye it must be the color of the dye you provide. From a rules stance, this is disallowed and going elsewhere to get it done would be considered inappropriate merchant hunting. |
|||
# Player A has "a glowing vermilion vultite sword" and presents it to the merchant, requesting only that the word vermilion be changed to viridian. The GM cannot do this. From a rules stance, this is disallowed and going elsewhere to get it done would be considered inappropriate merchant hunting. |
|||
# Player A has the same sword and the same request, but also has "a glowing viridian dye". The GM can do this. From a rules stance, this would be allowable and if that merchant denied it ICly, you can still go elsewhere and get it done. |

|||
;Rationale: |
|||
Glowing is inherently magical, by our definitions, and thus requires certain circumstances for a sustained glow on an item. Creating a dye under the alchemy system is one of those circumstances and therefore, we will definitely allow our GMs to work with supplied dyes, but only in the color supplied - since the color is a part of the alchemical dye recipe. Otherwise, a savvy player could figure out the easiest and cheapest glowing dye to make, make it in quantity, sell it or dye lots of items with it, and then have merchants change that "glowing ochre" to "glowing chartreuse" and "glowing viridian" and "glowing cerulean" and so on and so forth. This devalues the alchemy process for dyes and circumvents the glowing alteration rules. |
|||
The alternative is to step back away from altering with the alchemy dyes entirely, which we had allowed based on player request. I know we don't want to stop working with the supplied dyes, but we will have to work within the rules. If you bring a glowing dye of whatever color you want, as long as the merchant wants to and the item can be dyed, we'll do it, whereas before, we couldn't. This is a positive move forward, and having to supply the color you want dyed is a logical requirement given the exception to the altering rules that is being made. |

Colored dyes can be made through the General Alchemy subskill of Alchemy. These formulas were released on 09/16/08 as part of Alchemy Phase II. Temporary hair dyes were also released using a different dye base. As of November 2014, alchemy dyes can be used on cobbling uppers.
Alchemy dye additives can be added only to alchemy dyes, however dyes purchased at cobblers workshops or in the dyer's tent can be converted to alchemy dyes via the clerk in the dyer's tent by holding the non-alchemy dye in your right hand while using the ORDER BOTTLE command.

Some of the colors are independent from those available in the Dyer's tents; others overlap. This is an oversight that will eventually be resolved with the removal of any alchemy color from the dyer's tents. For most formulas, it is faster and less expensive to purchase the dyes in the tent than to make these dyes.
Example:
You pour a few test drops of white vial of dye on your leather tome. The results are good, and you can tell the dye will transform it into a cream white leather tome if you poured some more on it. >pour my dye on my tome You pour your white vial of dye on your leather tome, completely coating the item. The liquid soon dries, leaving you with a cream white leather tome. That was the last of the dye. >tap tome You tap a cream white leather tome, which is in your right hand.
The item will retain the material it INSPECTs as.
If the item is scripted or otherwise special and will not take the dye; it will run off during the initial pour. The dye will not be wasted.
Alteration Rules
Some of the additives create colors that are typically against alteration rules. The character must provide the glowing dye to the merchant to apply to the item being worked on. Whether or not they will depends on the particular merchant, of course, because some merchants might be anti-magical or whatever and not feel they can. That's an IC stance for a merchant. The item may require more than one dose of dye.
Previously, there was a rule in place requiring that the alteration remain the same shade as the provided dye. With the updates to the dye system opening up the additives to almost any color, this rule is no longer applicable.
Dye Bases
Translucent dye base
Translucent dye base is the base that all simple dye recipes will start with. It needs to be made in order to make any of the simple colored dyes.
|
|
Limpid dye base
Limpid dye base is the base that the more complicated dye recipes will start with. It needs to be made in order to make any of the more complicated colored dyes.
|
|
Clear dye base
Clear dye base is the base that the most complicated dye formulas and the dye additives will start with. It needs to be made in order to make any of the most complicated colored dyes or additives.
|
|
Dye Additives
- In order to work with dyer's tent dye, you need to buy the dye, ORDER BOTTLE, then pour the dye additive into it.
Brilliant dye additive
The formula for brilliant dye additive was learned in the Library; no rank information is known.
To create a brilliant dye, pour the brilliant dye additive in the completed dye. Both adjectives are combined (e.g. "a glittering light red vial of dye"). The dyed item will also have both adjectives
>pour add in my dye You pour the additive into your green vial of dye. As the two substances blend together, the dye slowly transforms into a brilliant green vial of dye.
