Canonicity

Per Wyrom on Discord (May 10th, 2021)...

  • "Bregandia is a bit of a retcon, there is a lot of behind the scenes stuff about it not existing/existing depending who you ask."

My thoughts as a player...

  • The Bregandian War feels like it's stuck because of it being one of the first major storylines in GemStone III, and as a result, was during an era where information archiving relied on player created websites. We also didn't have the team organization that we do now, with GMs, and the early days of GemStone were very much a learning experience filled with many hits and misses that further muddy handling this older content. I feel the only way to resolve this is for a GM to take this on as a dedicated project, and until that happens, it is canon but best left for nostalgic conversations and not deep dived for lore. On February 19th, 2015 GM Nebtwee said the following on the Player's Corner forums...

Here is why Devestior started…

Long long ago when I first became a GM I was down in the caves by the rats and three players were sitting in the safe area resting. I am sure you all know the place… I wanted to interact WITH the players instead of through merchants, etc. GMs have the ability to make some players see things in a room while others do not. So, I made one guys eyes start to slowly grow red. His buddies asked him what was going on and he said Huh?? So, I made his ears start to grow longer and his hair start to turn the same color as the rats nearby. Before I could even guess the next move his two buddies got out, drew their swords, and killed him in about 3 seconds. I was so shocked, but at the same time I was laughing my rear off! The power of role-play!

So, later I thought up Devestior and he entered the lands. The first time he showed up was at the Inn just north of the gate. A scream was heard and a body was found… and the first sights of Devestior was seen. It slowly grew from that.

Spike, Traleon, Jake, Glotaph the Wyvern, Simone (my RL wife played that char with me), all these characters were created with a basic plot in mind: an event to last for years which would entail a new world. (Part of that world was created by me but never released that I am aware of to this day).

Many unplanned things happened on my end that shocked me as well: Spike’s death was in NO way planned at all. He got caught up in the middle of a swarm of player’s spells and he died, dropping all his items. Needless to say that certainly was something I had to deal with right away. Also Jake was unplanned but a welcome addition. The inspiration behind Jake came from The Dark Tower by Stephen King.

What was planned: a slow invasion of Bregandians over time. The first, and biggest, was massive and went on for like 4 days. It was a blast and had about every GM involved with it, as well as hosts. Code was written to close all the shops in the Landing while the events were going on. That was a blast as well. Yes, the NPCs lead by non GMs did get a little out of hand, but, it was something that many people still talk about to this day when they think of Devestior and Spike. The start of this thread was what, 10 years after the fact?

I would love to see the story line continue and I have approached Simutronics time and time again to give it consideration. I do not want to be paid for it even, I just wanted to interact with the players and create storylines that would last for years. I think I started that.

Maybe, one day…

you will see a shadow out of the corner of your eye… a presence in the air… a cold steel blade being unsheathed in the darkness behind the vine-covered entrance to a forgotten keep entrance…

and a scream is heard from the distance...
