Subject: ASSESS Verb Update
The ASSESS verb has been updated to allow skilled warriors to determine claidhmore and katana weighting relative to normal weapons of their type. In addition, for both weapons and armor, a skilled warrior will be able to determine if the item is worse than average.
An example, using the the dull claidhmores wielded by some hobgoblins in Upper Trollfang:
>assess my claidh You assess the claidhmore for structural weaknesses and strengths.
Careful examination indicates the dull claidhmore has a base strength of 75 and a base durability of 200. You also determine the current integrity of the dull claidhmore to be at 100.0%.
Checking out the claidhmore, it looks like it is less effective than a normal claidhmore, resulting in it being substantially diminished in its ability to inflict critical wounds. You note that the claidhmore is still masterfully weighted compared to normal weapons.
Furthermore, a new category of weighting/padding has been added above "incredibly" to allow for better differentiation of truly exceptional items. For reference, the threshold for "fantastically" critical weighted is just below claidhmore weighting.

Subject: Re: Clarification please, on new ASSESS messaging.
I've added a few more thresholds to help you out. Everything from "masterful" down through "light" is unchanged from the convention that has been used for the past several years. Note that incredible has been moved up the list, to be, well, incredible.
In order of descending magnitude:
wondrous
incredible
fantastic <-- standard claidhmores
phenomenal
expert
superb
masterful
exceptional
very heavy
heavy <--- standard katanas
decent
somewhat
fair
light
no padding/weighting <-- This is the baseline
slightly diminished
somewhat diminished
noticeably diminished
substantially diminished
The specific values associated with each threshold are not something we'll be releasing. Player estimates of current value correlations are based on player research.
<<a non-claidhmore weapon(meaning a weapon not NAMED a claidhmore) that has 40 points of weighting, would it read as "claidhmore" weighting, or "fantastic" weighting? >>
A non-claidhmore with critical weighting equivalent to a claidhmore would assess as fantastic.
<<How would armor be worse than average?>>
Any armor with negative padding would be worse than average, and it would actually cause the wearer to take extra damage or more lethal criticals (bummer!). There are some suits of armor in the game with negative damage padding. I'm not aware of any armor with negative critical padding, offhand, but it probably exists.

Subject: HSN: Unarmed Multistrike
Unarmed combatants may now initiate unarmed multi-strike attacks, provided that they have sufficient training in the Multi Opponent Combat skill. Training thresholds are identical to melee multi-strike requirements for both unfocused (multi-target) and focused (same-target) versions. Such strikes are initiated with the MSTRIKE verb, specifying the type of unarmed attack desired, as in "MSTRIKE GRAPPLE" or "MSTRIKE KICK [target]". Use MSTRIKE HELP for more information and additional usage options.
However, the specified attack is not necessarily used on each individual strike. Instead, the following rules are used for each strike in sequence; the first one on which the conditions are met determines the type of attack.
- If a tier-up strike is pending against the target, use that type of attack.
- If the attacker currently has decent ("tier one") positioning against the target, use JAB. If this is the first jab against this particular target during this MSTRIKE invocation, it does not count for the purposes of total allowed strikes.
- If the attacker has good ("tier two") positioning against a target, use the attack type that was specified at the start.
- If the attacker has excellent ("tier three") positioning against a target, use the attack type that was specified at the start, unless the specified attack type was JAB, in which case choose a random attack from PUNCH, GRAPPLE, and KICK instead.
Related to this release, the ASSESS verb has been updated to list your unarmed position against all foes in the area, via ASSESS UNARMED.
