"Start with curiosity, proceed with understanding, and finish with kindness." ~Tatterclaws
Lore
Tatterclaws always seems to have one foot in each world: Half-Sylvan, Half-not; half-forest dweller, half-alleyway walker; half-protector, half-slayer; half-merchant, half-philanthropist. He wanders the woods and streets of Elanthia seeking bounties, helping his fellow adventurers, and discovering his place in the world. He appears to reside in the abandoned crypts under Wehnimer's Landing, though he has also been seen resting in the Dragonsclaw Forest outside of town.
Ancestrally, he is part of the Sylvan diaspora. His family history, though he recognizes it may be apocryphal, claims to tie his lineage to the Eranishal, the group of 170 ranger-like scouts led by Oriahn Desechal, who joined the Elves to fight against Despana. Another family tale links him as a descendant of Alandalor, whose name means "the lost is found," the first human adopted by the Sylvans, and who ultimately became a respected healer.
Akin to the worldview of his Sylvan lineage, Tatterclaws views his friends and communities as part of his larger family in the world. Curiously, he makes it clear that he is married, but speaks little of his spouse or family, and always with a strange air of simultaneous tragedy and hopefulness.
Curios
Tatterclaws is a collector who has acquired a number of oddities and curiosities during his many years traveling the world. Some notable belongings are below:
A beckoning nedum vereri hand: Though ancient and long-bloodless, the lithe physique and a branded symbol of the Temple of Love suggest this relic once belonged to a nedum vereri. Its long, delicate fingers have been frozen by rigor mortis in a beckoning gesture. A witchwood lining inside the wrist allows the appendage to contain liquids within.
This hand lures the soul to remain in the body by functioning as a white flask. If you're lucky enough to be rescued by Tatterclaws, you may be gifted with a drink. Don't worry about holding your nose; you're already dead.
A wizened crypt rat: The eyes of this ancient-looking rat are clouded milk-white, but its claws, though ragged, remain sharp. Its fur has long since silvered. However, the years seem only to have lengthened its mass of slender, hoary whiskers, which twitch curiously. The rat observes its surroundings with a weary, apathetic air. The crypt rat looks to be in pretty good shape.
This rat accompanies Tatterclaws in his many crypt-diving adventures. Tatterclaws insists he's tame, but there's little evidence thereof.
An immense illuminated tome: You see an immense illuminated tome. The cover of this enormous volume is practically a full-sized painting in itself. Gilt vinework crawls through a vivid paradise of Elanthian flora and fauna, its every detail exhibited by gem or brushstroke. Each of the book's leaves has been treated like an individual artwork: fashioned from high-grammage paper, lettered with flawless script, and illustrated in masterful oils by a cast of artists. The spine reads, "The Tale of Tatterclaws." Bound into the tome are some pages of creamy vellum.
This book contains the notes and stories of Tatterclaws' journey through Elanthia.
Some tattered claws: These elongated claws are fashioned from mummified, moor-hued skin and wrapped with old rags. The desiccated flesh has dried taut over the bones beneath, lending the impression of a pair of long-dead hands borrowed from their grave.
These are the source of Tatterclaws' moniker.
There are several items Tatterclaws has been seeking for many years, including:
