Mass spells are defensive spells that are able to be cast on an entire group at once. Originally three spells - Mass Elemental Defense, Mass Colors, and Mass Blur - were mass spells (known colloquially as "massies") and formed the basis of many adventurer's defense. Some other spells are able to be cast on groups (e.g., Heroism), but since these spells generally have a short duration and require substantial lore training they are less common. Mass spells are distinct from group focus spells (e.g., Focus Barrier) since they have a limited duration and do not require the caster to remain in the group.
